This was actually really tasty. The fries were freshly made and perfect, and the Quarter Pounder BLT was about as good as McD's burgers get.

Bells Corners location (Robertson at Moodie). Kids' last day of school...

I must admit, other than Yukon Gold Duck Fat Fries, Mickee Dees' fries are the bomb. Just don't refrigrate them and eat them the next day. They lose that hot, greasy yumminess that we all know and love.

McDonald's fries taste like McDonald's fries. If you want that "McDonald's" pre-frozen taste then go nuts.

2006 Nov 7
You're right! I seem to remember that they dropped the beef fat several years ago to accommodate vegetarians, but then they brought it back because the fries didn't taste as good without it. Kind of like what happened with "new" Coke. :)

McDonald's has been working for years trying to come up with a trans-fat-free recipe for their fries. So far, no luck.

Re. "fried in (hydrogenated) vegetable fat" -- not entirely. "A blend of partially hydrogenated...beef fat and cottonseed oil."

I am filled with shame about this, but: I eat these despite having been otherwise pretty strictly vegetarian my entire life. I was too old to go back when I found out about the beef fat. These are the _sole_ exception to the 'vegetarian' thing; I don't cheat anywhere else.

Re. "oh so good if they're less than 2 minutes old" -- oh, yes, yes...

2006 Oct 11
Agreed. Still my favourite fries ever.

2006 Sep 15
Sure, they're fried in (hydrogenated) vegetable fat and they're pretty salty. But they're the standard against which all fries are measured. Thin, crispy, and oh so good if they're less than 2 minutes old. ;-)

These are great! I'm not surprised they use lard--so did McDonald's until they succumbed to the hype. I only do fries rarely but might as well have the best. For the couple of times a year I indulge I want the best. And any oil heated high enough to deep fry is never healthy. Please treat deep fried foods with respect and as a treat! (But enjoy when you do!)

These are the best chip wagon fries I've found in Ottawa! The secret to their delightful crispiness and magical flavour is that they fry in lard (Tenderflake, to be exact). I've been several times but learned this only during my last visit.

This isn't the place to have poutine because the gravy is just okay. Go for the plain fries with vinegar and ketchup!

A big plus for them using a seperate fryer for their regular fries. The sweet potato fries contain gluten, however their regular fries are gluten free and fried in a seperate fryer. Important info for those with celiac's.

Was out for dinner this evening and had the Green Machine with fries and my wife had the Sicilian with fries. The fries here are fresh cut and crispy. You don't have to worry about soggy here.

Basket of fries. As FF says thin cut but not overly salty or greasy today. Sure were crispy. Usually I like them a bit thicker but they sure did hit the spot!

2010 Apr 18
The fries are good if you like them thin-cut, brown, crispy, salty, and greasy! Great with ketchup.

The fries are good but not great. They seem to be slightly coated (see the bubbling on each?). Perhaps it is just how they fried? I prefer the Five Guys fries where they are soggier and more chewy in the middle.

A 'value' size of the fresh cut fries. I've sprayed with vinegar (no cider or malt unfortunately) and sprinkled seasoning on them. Ketchup on the side for dippin'.

Slightly soft, slightly crisp. Skins on.

My burger had the choice of Fries or Salad on the side, so I chose fries because I'd never been here before and wanted to see what theirs were like. Absolutely perfect, that's what they were like!

Great french fries! Nice thick, perfectly cooked golden fries! Crispy and tasty!

Smelled the fryers being fired around 11-ish on a Sunday a.m., while coming out of the next door Produce Depot.

Tried a small fry ($3.75) with a side of mayo and Rooster Brand sriracha hot sauce. Dipping in each sauce apart, or together is highly recommended.

Bottom Line: ______________________________

Not the best fries I've ever had but would drop in for a quick fix, if I'm going by and have the hankern' for a fry.

Everyone at the table had fries with their meal, and we all agreed they were fantastic. They seemed to me to be battered.

Had some tasty golden fries from here last Saturday while my house lost electrical power for 23 hours.

The two people running the truck were super friendly. Will definitely return to try the poutine!

I enjoyed the fries from Slice & Co twice last week. I was so impressed the first time (a Wednesday), that I had to come back the following Saturday when out with friends.

They were beautifully crisped and salted and served with vinegar and a garlic aioli

I got a small order of fries here this week. They were very good, and quite big. As posted elsewhere the medium are ridiculously huge. I saw a woman picking up a "family size" which was pretty much a paper garbage bag full of fries. The fries have a light seasoning mix on them. Nice and not overdone, although I prefer my fries non-seasoned. They had white vinegar on the counter, but I did not see malt, which I prefer (although I didn't ask either).

Poutine, and possibly fish and chips are now on the bucket list.

The fries have an addictive quality to them. I just keep eating it until there are none left. Must be homemade with skin on and nice texture. It could be the oil they used that I happen to like. Good accompaniment to the pulled pork sandwich or on its own.

We do have Malt Vinegar... perhaps it was hidden behind other condiments... the counter is pretty high... sorry - just ask if you don't see it. Thx

2011 Jul 28
Fries were good, solid chip truck fries. Malt vinegar would be a nice addition - at the moment they just have white vinegar.

I had a basket of fries here the other day and they were absolutely perfect - probably the best fries I've had in years. Almost as though there were not a drop of oil in them on on them - and crispy as anything on the outside, nice and tender on the inside.

2009 Sep 19
My wife had a side of fries with her Junior Burger and even though she hadn't eaten much all day she could not finish both so I ended up eating some of her fries. They were done really well - definitely amongst some of the best in town that I'd had.

There's something unique about the fries here. They're always piping hot with a nice crisp to them. Really, really hot... I can't explain it!

Luxe serves those neato small Belgian-style frites. Pretty good although I'm no fan of mayo with my fries.

This is practically right across the street from my house and it is pretty difficult to fight the temptation to go here more often than I do. Fortunately for my waist line I manage to keep it to maybe twice a month at most. Wow they make good chips! Fresh cut and cooked to perfection!

I think I noticed them there today, in fact, with the nice weather. Maybe I'll pay them a visit this week and take a photo or two for the site.

Fries are FRESH- you can see the guy press the whole potatoes through the fry-maker and everything. Nice thick skin-on fries. Extemely tasty with salt and vinegar. I usually get them with gravy and curd (a la poutine) - but these fries are good enough to stand alone!

Their cajun french fries have just the right amount of spice to keep you addicted to them.

WOW.... Had my first box of fries/chips from JP's today (Yes... the Baseline/Clyde location) .... and boy-oh-boy I never had such good fries since my visit to Sheila's Canteen.

She is located at a beach just southwest of Halifax NS. Near Hubbards on St Margaret's Bay. She gave me three pieces of fried haddock when I only ordered two. Sheila said "One of the pieces looked a little small so I gave you three".

Took me two hours of swimming in the Atlantc ocean to burn off the fish and chips.

The fries at both locations are good and crispy AND they taste like potatoes. Go figure ... french fried potatoes tasting like ... potatoes.

PS: The pic was taken by me while on vacation a few years ago.

Absolutely superb! Could not possibly be improved! The only real complaint is that they coyly ask if you want herbed mayo instead of ketchup to be 'European', but they don't tell you they are going to charge you 70 cents extra for it whereas the ketchup is free.

S & S Fries, best fries in Ottawa hands down there is no other chip truck like S & S that will satisfy my craving.

2008 May 10
Got my first fix of fries from a chip wagon today.... so the summer season has officially begun!

S & S Fries has been a fixture in the Canadian Tire parking lot in Barrhaven for a couple of years now, and has a dedicated following.

The fries today were great... big thick hand cut potatoes lightly fried (not too oily) and the oil was perfect (not dark). As this was a mid-afternoon "snack" I didn't have a hotdog or hamburger to go with them (but I'm sure I will in the near future).

Probably the best pommes frites I've ever tasted. Crispy, perfectly salty and served with the most delicious flavoured mayonnaise. Must try!

The kimchi fries are indeed a pretty awesome snack, been meaning to mention them here for a while :)

2016 Apr 2
Kimchi fries at the Elgin St location. Great fries and combo of kimchi, mayo, sriracha, chicken and garnishes. All this dish was missing was something pickled (onions, hot peppers). I enjoyed this during appy hour so for $7 I thought it was a great deal and paired nicely with their bitter.

2010 Feb 18
Once again, perfect french fries.

Another 2 strong thumbs for their fries. Perfectly crisp on the outside, tender on the inside.

Had fries (w/a burger) here on Friday and I'm still thinking about them -- they were very good. Home-cut fries are so rare these days.

2007 Dec 23
The home-cut fries I had yesterday were absolutely perfect!

2007 Mar 23
Was back at lunch today and this time had the fries with my burger instead of salad. They appear to be home-cut and were very yummy. Nice and crisp on the outside and tender inside. Good job clocktower!

Ours were great -- entire family loved them. Sort of a cross between New York Fries fries, and chip wagon fries. If those are your sorts of fries, you will enjoy Five Guys'.
