3rd Annual OttawaFoodies.com Potluck - Defunct [Events]

How many people are likely to attend?
My condo has a party room that I can rent, its got a full kitchen, and is at ground level. I'm located in Westboro and the condo is right beside the Dominion Station transit stop. Massive outdoor charcoal bbq is adjacent to the Party room and available for use. All your listed requirements are met, bathrooms, accessible via bike/transit, electrical etc. Alcohol also wouldn't be an issue as it's not being sold and is a private party. There's a large outdoor area outside the room between the bbq where tables/chairs etc can be setup. And regularly is for functions here.. not that I've attended any but just sayin. :)

Ravi,
Last year we had 20. But that was in late autumn. Two years ago we had 30 to 40 people. Your condo seems like a good location. As someone who used to live around there, I'm quite familiar with that building. Before we 'officially' list your place as a possibility, do you know if there are any weird rules (i.e. outdoor cooking restrictions, etc.) we should know about it and its availability for weekends in late July to late August?
FFD.

I can find out about the dates on Monday.. I'm out of town last weekend of July. What sort of outdoor cooking would be done outside of bbqing?? lol. There's a massive 4ft wide bbq grill outside. And the party room is meant to be used in conjunction with the bbq and open area outside of it.

I'd be in if the date works. Keep me posted, looks like a pretty nice spot.
I was at Lac Le Peche on the weekend and I have to say, if you get their early enough to commandeer a table or two the picnic spots can be pretty nice for a group of 15-30. You'd have to plan well and bring chairs, utensils and food that traveled well, but it's certainly not a bad spot to have a BBQ/picnic...and it's easy from a clean up/hosting perspective. Lac Philippe has those huge charcoal pit-style BBQ's which are even better for a group, but the recent flooding washed the beach away and I don't anticipate Lac Philippe being open any time soon unfortunately.

If the invite is open I would love to come out and meet the Foodies :-) August weekends are pretty booked with Festivals and Events but I'll try to make it... Saturday Aug 21 is good at the moment.
I like the look of Ravi's spot.

Bring a family-sized can of Chef Boyardee if you like, and I bet somebody will say, "Cool! I've always wanted to try one of those." OK, that person would be me. :-)
Seriously though, there's no need to feel any trepidation about culinary judgement. You'll find that the food at these events covers a large spectrum and everyone is appreciative. Enjoyment of food is a personal thing and you can't please everyone. The most important fact is that it is a gift.

blubarry and caperbeach, let me assure you as well, I can't cook gourmet at all and managed to do just fine. I mean, I had a fairly simple pie on the first time, and it was quite appreciated, and I nearly ruined my dish the second time - the sharing is the important part. (Also, don't eat for two days beforehand. No, like, almost seriously. I may try that this time.)
Ravi, that location would be pretty sweet for all the accessibility.
Adam, I'm here all summer and don't expect to go to many festivals except maybe late August.
Who had done the survey for dates last time?
The option of grilling again is tentalising. I still remember the cherry marinade of two years ago. Mmmmmm.

So unless anyone has any serious objections, I'm going to recommend we use Ravi's party room just because it's very accessible for people from all parts of the city (literally 2 minute walk from Dominion Station!), it has a kitchen and washrooms, an outdoor and indoor area, and a big-ass charcoal BBQ!
Now we move onto the next step -choosing the date. Ravi and I came up with 2 options. Please choose one of the following:
Option A:
Event date: Saturday, August 13th
Rain date: Saturday, August 20th
Option B:
Event date: Saturday, August 20th
Rain date: Saturday, August 27th
Regardless of the day, the potluck would begin around 5 PM.
Please post your preferences here ASAP so that Ravi can confirm the room booking. I'll post the date here by Friday, July 22nd.

Thanks Ravi, but the logistics of moving an entire mostly roasted goat from
place to place would be somewhat daunting (but comical).
Also, i WAS joking. A little. Clearly no one else here has seen 'Best in Show'... but seriously what if i promise to put back the flagstones nicely and everything...? :)

"Mr. Shanghavi, would you know anything about someone sneaking onto the property yesterday, digging up the back patio, building a raging fire, then burying an entire goat carcass over the still smoking coals?"
"Why no mister landlord sir, i wouldn't. Now if you'll excuse me i have to go join a whole bunch of complete strangers i met on the internet for dinner. By the way if you notice a pervasive smell of cumin I don't know anything about thsat either."

Just seeing this topic now. Would be nice to meet all of you. Weekends tend to be busy so I don't know if it's fair for me to vote ... as I don't even know if I could make it. If I could it would be for Aug. 20 so that would be Option B. Also, I know people said family (partners & children) would be welcome but would this include 2 year olds who are holy terrors at the moment? Just joking. We live nearby so it wouldn't be hard to take them home. Also, didn't notice if anyone asked Ravi Shanghavi if there was a cost associated with using his condo's party room?

I know this is a rain date, but 27th works for me.
I did go to the potluck last year and it was a lot of fun. My sister and I met other foodies had great conversations about food, travel, wines and blogs for awhile.
I did fret a bit about what to bring to a "foodie potluck" but once there I shouldn't have worried so much about it.
Most of my time was spent on thinking what to bring and the logistics of getting it hot once there.
I hope there are pictures and recipes after. I'm still trying to recreate Nialls wonderful risotto.

I just wanted to give you an update on the RSVP situation. So far, 11 people are expected to attend. Keep those responses coming at www.surveymonkey.com/s/Z3YXS73
2011 Aug 10
It appears that I will unfortunately have to work the weekend of the potluck. I'll continue to manage RSVPs but would anyone be interested in coming around 5:00 PM to set up? All that's required is unfolding some tables and chairs that are already in the party room and putting up a sign directing people to the potluck.
2011 Aug 15
Food Film Director, sounds like a good idea! I'd suggest starting a new discussion to track the postponed event. I can update the name of this one to reflect the postponement.
2011 Sep 12
The same party room has been officially booked for October 15th. Please RSVP to the event here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/Z3YXS73
If you RSVP'd to the original event, please re-RSVP as I reset the responses.

At six attendees it makes sense to cancel. Not all are likely to come, so this makes for too wee an event for the party room. Id just have it at my place but am renoing entrance way... Too much mess... Sigh. Really wanted this to work out. Do we reschedule or? Adam mentioned previous years had a 25+ turnout
2011 Oct 13
I think it's a case of scheduling conflicts - it always happens, but we hit a bad time for it. I'm still game with a smaller crowd. I'm still making my chili, ingredients are bought. Just for fewer. :)
If rescheduling, colder weather makes for more difficulty bringing things around, but not impossible.

Food Film Director
I would like to wish everyone a happy Canada Day long weekend. I hope you all get to eat interesting things with family, friends, and colleagues. However, as you do so, I would also like you to think about two things:
1. When would you like to have our 3rd annual potluck? (I think moving it back to summer is a good choice). Specifically, take a look at your Saturday schedules from late July to late August.
2. Where would you like it to be held? From experience, here are a few recommended conditions:
The location should have
- some on- or off-street vehicle parking in the vicinity
- easy access to public transit and bike routes
- accessible washrooms nearby
- one or more barbeques (definitely!!)
- a kitchen or place to plug in portable kitchen appliances (this would be nice but is not mandatory)
- not-too-onerous rules for serving alcohol
- some sort of tables or space to put picnic blankets
Please enjoy your weekend and when we all return to our usual routines next week, I'd be curious as to your replies.
