"Foody" calls [General]

2009 Jun 10
There's a thread going on in another foodie community I'm a member of about "FOODY CALLS" - like booty calls but with food :) The question is:

How far would you go for a foody call?

I've definitely driven from Ottawa to Montreal for croissants, and from Prince Edward County to Kingston for Red Lobster (cheddar biscuits <3).

I am very much looking forward to my trip to Seattle next week - I had this blueberry breakfast cake at a restaurant called Anthony's that was just so, so, so very good! But, I probably wouldn't travel to Seattle JUST for the breakfast cake ;) So I guess that doesn't count.

Edit: fail at bold tags. You all understand.

foodie calls?

Pam when I first saw the subject line of this thread I immediately thought of Bob and Doug McKenzie from the old SCTV show doing their old "coo roo coo coo" theme-;)

I do confess to having a bad habit of going into a store (especially if said store sells pastry or candy) for one item them walking out with a bag full of stuff that I really "need".

2009 Jun 10
I will drive obnoxious lengths to get food that I crave - in fact, I enjoy the whole experience of doing a foodie call!

2009 Jun 10
I normally drive to New Brunswick this time every year for Big Strange New Brunswick Brew - about 1300 km each way. Sniff. Normally I'd have left today actually. Sniff. But I just don't have enough vacation accrued yet on my new job. Sniff.

The first few years I did it, I drive down all day Friday, stayed 2 nights, and drove back all day Sunday. The last couple years we go down on the Wednesday.

As much as I have favourite eats in specific spots, "foodie calls" just don`t do it for me... you`ll never see me driving say to Montreal just for a big old plate of Bar-B-Barn Ribs... nope, I`ll get them next time I`m in town.

On the other hand...

LOL, I plan some of my vacation time around trips to Vineyards... Niagara, PE County... If food "calls to some" let me tell you that nothing can be stronger than the "Whine of the Wine"... this strange and eerie sound can be heard by a rare set of homosapiens for 1000s of miles (even across oceans and whole continents).

And as Zym said there is always the "Bellow of the Beer"... have been known to drive to Beau`s just to sample the latest.

;-)

2009 Jun 10
There is far,far more than just beer involved in my annual NB trip, F&T : www.ottawafoodies.com

2009 Jun 10
Hmmm, might have spoke to fast....

I know of a great little spot out Kemptville way... with some mighty good Fresh Squeezed Lemonade, BBQ Ribs and oh some sweet old Yams.

Thinking I might just have to make a run out there and visit that fine old Southern Lady Miss Jean Albert this weekend.

2009 Jun 10
Zym - Ya I know that... but lets face it is still about the beer ;-)

Otherwise it would be called the Big Strange New Brunswick Weekend Where People Come Hoping There Might Be Beer.

EDIT - And with that long title... Now I'm beginning to see images of Bob & Doug McKenzie

2009 Jun 10
No, actually, if it were really just all about the beer my wife would not be so keen to drive down on Friday and back on Sunday, and would not be so regretful that we are missing it this year.

A couple of times a year I drive down to Windsor (860km away), and before even visiting my parents I go to Mr. Shishkebab. It is a grungy little restaurant on a dying street, with the most amazing Gyros this side of the Atlantic. $18 for a Gyro keeps the complainers away. But those who get past the sticker shock are rewarded with a garlicky monster big enough to feed 3.

I do recall, back in the early eighties, travelling with my room mates from Iowa State University (Ames, Iowa), to the outskirts of Chicago on a quest for White Castle burgers (no kidding).

Needless to say, this was long before Harold and Kumar's adventure. However, ours was somewhat less eventful.

The burgers were simply that good.

I've driven from Ottawa to Montreal on more than one occasion for more than one foodie call
The longest one was from Orleans to Burlington Vermont, for no reason other than being young and stupid...the premise for the trip was "let's go for a coffee" we had one at McDonald's then came back.

2009 Jun 11
Every year at this time (actually every third Saturday of June) I drive
from Ottawa to my home town of Richmond for the Annual Volunteer Fireman's
Chicken BBQ. This fellow from Spencerville has been doing this for around 35 years. The BBQ chicken is soooo goood, you could eat the bones :-)
Yup this year it's on June 20th.

From 2:00PM to 7:00PM

This is from the Richmond association website

Annual Richmond Firefighters’ Chicken B.B.Q.
at the Agricultural Building at the Richmond Fairgrounds. Don’t go hungry, Get your tickets early by calling Larry at 838-2281

Monty - You win.

2009 Jun 11
Driving to Niagara to buy wine. Repeatedly.

And only fifteen sleeps to go until the next one!

2009 Jun 11
Momomoto - I soooo hear you, I was down in May, and will make at least one more trip this summer... just trying to decide which month to go... July, August or September? LOL, knowing me I'll probably end up going twice.

2009 Jun 11
We drive to Montréal just to have a meal at Au Pied de Cochon... huummmmm Foie Gras ;-)

2009 Jun 11
F+T Jean Albert's...god, I need to try that place.

Hippo - I used to live in Windsor, I have not been back but those gyros sound tempting...makes me think about if a true foodie call should be for something bad for you, where you'll feel kind of guilty and gross the next morning... ;)

I definitely just had to look up if the actor Bill Murray went to Iowa State (he didn't, for anyone else wondering).

I've never had White Castle :O Want to try it some day...where's the closest one? I can't figure out how to make the website recognise my Canadian postal code.

Also need to try Sonic at some point...and In-N-Out!

2009 Jun 11
Pam - Oh gosh, you absooooolutely have to get out the Jean Albert's - LeRoy's as you've probably read, most Foodies here who have been think it is a real gem.

Chuckling at the Bill Murray remark, think we've all "checked out" his references once or twice ourselves...

As for White Castle, based on what I see on their Website, closest state is NY, but unfortunately all locations seem to be in and around NYC.

2009 Jun 11
I know, I know re: Jean Albert's...SOON. I swear.

And, can't imagine going to NYC and then making a trip to White Castle. There's way too much food to try in NYC to make room for fast food burgers.

2009 Jun 11
Pam, the closest White Castle is in Detroit (about 20mins from the Ambassador bridge). If my trips home are longer than 72 hours... I usually head over for a true coney breakfast (YES BREAKFAST) some power shopping, then grab a case of WCs with cheese for the trip back over the bridge.

It generally takes 2 solid weeks in the gym to get over my Windsor forays.

If you ever get back, Mr. Shishkebab is on the corner of Ottawa and Parent.

2009 Jun 11
I did the foody call to get White Castle which landed me in NJ & NYC (which also landed me in Philly for a cheesesteak). Jean Albert's, ahh... I have to go back for some ribs, collard greens & mac'n'cheese (gotta mix the greens & M&C together). Driving to AZ and taking detours (adding an extra day of travel) on the way to get pit BBQ. Wilno for Wilno Tavern perogies.

2009 Jun 11
My next foody call will be to Carlsbad Springs: www.dsbbq.ca/index.html

Pit BBQ in the Ottawa area! Most excellent! They serve brisket, so I have to go.

2009 Jun 12
PAM - I tried Sonic in Florida and it was nothing to write home about. I think everything had been microwaved.

I am going to L.A. in a month and am excited to try the food there. I only have a few days so I am tempted to try the famous In-n-out Burger however, I would rather just stick to the taco joints! Does anybody have any suggestions for L.A.? I am staying in Beverly Hills area but have access to a car.

2009 Jun 12
In-n-out Burgers are pretty good... much better than your standard chain burger joint. It's made pretty old school, so more like a Dick's than a McDonald's. There are some pretty amazing taco joints in Pasadena, but I'm not sure if its worth the 45 min drive from LA =)

2009 Jun 12
L.A.! I hear Pink Taco is great, or so my foodie cousin from the OC tells me. I didn't get to stop there as planned on the way to Huntington Beach, so maybe my extensive pre-trip burger research will pay off for you.

If you are into burgers, Apple Pan is top rated by everyone from food critics to Chad from RHCP. (sit-down diner atmostphere)

You !MUST! eat at In & Out, it's a Californian Institution! THey're rated #1 fast food in the country for a reason. Here's my official review:

"In & Out!!! So clean! The fries are freshly cut, fried but not greasy with the lightest crisp coating and packed with potato punch. They’re stiff, not undercooked, really perfect. The burger patty was a fast food burger patty, slightly thicker but fresher, never frozen, well charred yet juicy. Bun was dense and squishy at the same time, perfectly medium-dark toasted only on the inside, loads of fresh chucked iceberg and tons of tomato slices UNDER the burger. Oh wow."

A few people in my circle claimed they couldn't taste the difference, but these were men who shoved/crush the food into their mouths in three bites.

Sonic: amazing iced lemonade. Berry-lemon is my favorite. The tater tots taste like the kind you find in the freezer aisle.

White Castle's ok if it's just to add a check mark to your list, but I wouldn't waste a meal on it, certainly not a foodie call.

I planned a tour of the Eastern US based on it's food, so I guess the farthest we drove was Houston for the best Mexican north of the border. I try to make it out to Pizza Delight in Smith Falls for Garlic Fingers with real Donair Sauce once every year if I can't go back to NB.

Oops. Kinda rambled a bit. :)

2009 Jun 12
Chimichimi, please keep us updated on dsbbq.... it says opening early June. I am dying to get out there.

2009 Jun 12
FoodMonstar: there's a Pizza Delight in Smiths Falls? that's awesome!

can't say i've travelled too far specifically for a meal as i tend to plan meals around vacations, not vacations around meals haha.

i have seriously contemplated doing a road trip centered around restaurants featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives though!

2009 Jun 12
HungryHippo - will do, the menu looks impressive!

Monty - Whenever I do a roadtrip, I avoid chains, fast food, etc. and try to hit up the "local's hangout" a la DDD.

London ont. for the most awesome panzerotti at Tony's--3 or 4 locations now. Marzano's used to suffice here in Ottawa but Tony's is the best. I am so evil I once kept the box (large, football shaped, with Tony's stamp on it and wrapped my son's Christmas present in it)...yes, the whole family loves Tony's panzerotti. My sister lives in London and brings a couple every time we visit...not the same reheated though!
And I never make a specific trip but I always stop at the Big Apple for a pie if I am on the 401.

2009 Jun 12
Clearly next time I'm back in London I'll have to try Tony's: we used to get Marino's when we had a hankering.

2009 Jun 14
back in Cali
I'd drive all the way from Sacramento to So Cal for an In and Out Burger to fill the urge

2009 Jun 14
Obi, I had my first "Animal Style" In-N-Out burger last month. It's not a gourmet product, but it's everything a big mac should be. I learned about the animal style from the wikipedia entry (en.wikipedia.org) and did feel a bit strange while ordering using untested jargon. No problem though and I got what I wanted. :-)

2009 Jun 14
ZOMG. I miss Tony's panzerottis. A lot! Also, Archie's fish and chips in London.

Elsewhere, I trek to La Cigale in Old Chesea a few times a summer, but other than that, not having a car makes it hard to go too far a foot.

2009 Jun 16
I wouldn't call it a "foodie call" per se, but when we're in Montreal I go to Aux Vivres as many times as humanly possible. Last time I ate lunch, dinner, lunch there (we were only there for a day and a half!). Tofu Dragon Bowls for ever!
www.auxvivres.com/

Also, we'll drive from Westboro to the Glebe to get our coffee beans.

And, though I'm there often, I always make sure when I'm at my parents' place in the GTA I pick up a few jars of Barbarian's Steak Seasoning. I've never found another seasoning I like more and we always have at least two jars in the house.

"Foody call" - OMG, what an awesome term! Now I know what to call that siren song when I just have to have a particular food item from a particular place!

Recent foody calls for me:

-all the talk of macarons on this site made me yearn to try them. So when in New York recently I made the trek from the West Side to the Rockefeller Centre to visit La Maison du Chocolat (about a 2 hour trip if you include my meandering around the Rockefeller Centre and St. Patrick's Basilica)

-more macarons at Pasticceria Gelateria (West End to Preston St). This may seem like a short distance, but all the construction on Preston made it seem like a trip to some third world country...eek

-on a sunny day in autumn I strapped on my baby and walked 40 minutes from Bayshore to Lincoln Fields to Cora's because I just HAD to have an English custard and fresh fruit crepe. It hit the spot!

- going to India in August to eat fresh jilebis...mmm (okay, so I'm not going there JUST to eat jilebis...well, not technically...)
