One of the best hidden gems in the Ottawa area. Best of all, it's right off the bike path – the perfect weekend plan that includes a marvelous food reward.

They say that the personality of small business owners is reflected by their employees. As I walked in the door of Edgar, I was greeted with a welcoming smile and a confirmation that I intended to dine inside. The service continued to be warm and attentive for the duration of my visit, with queries from multiple servers about my enjoyment of the various items. It's easy to feel that the employees are happy to be there.

I would describe Edgar as small on pretense, small on space, and huge on quality.

I enjoyed a perfect Cappuccino with my brunch. I'll post food notes in the appropriate sections.

if you need another reason to go try edgar, do it for the homemade ice cream. one of the places featured on Shawna Wagman's summer food column, in today's interview, she rates edgar up with pascale in terms of excellent ice cream. marysol (owner of edgar) makes the ice cream fresh each day and creates her own ice cream sandwiches using her own home made cookies.

here is a link to the column, the clip is not yet online

Bacon - the owner is a she, Edgar was her father's name. The food is so wonderful it sells out very quickly and they don't leave anything behind to stale. Many great places in Ottawa are the same, once it runs out it is gone for the day! (Morning Owl has the exact same approach).

To read a little about all the love, care and thought that goes into the food, please see her blog. sheeatsbears.blogspot.com/

It sounds like Edgar's approach to keep food fresh and interesting and changing everyday, isn't your cup of tea. You'll probably be happier with a sandwich shop more like Direnzo's or La Bottega.

Went here 2-3 weeks ago. Half the sandwich types on the blackboard were sold out, so I had to compromise. So-so panini, but since I got slugged $7, left underwhelmed.

Gave it another chance yesterday. All out of sandwiches. This was 3:30, a full 1 1/2 hours before closing time.

This guy basically makes a certain number of sandwiches, measuring and calculating everything to the T, and if he sells out, you're out of luck. No such thing as a custom sandwich or anything on demand. Bush league.

Never stepping foot here again.

My wife and I went for breakfast this morning. I had the salé of the day - huevos rancheros. Their version is 2 poached eggs inside delicious mixture of black beans, roasted red pepper and a few other ingredients that blended perfectly - all this sitting in a toasted tortilla. It was accompanied by a few perfectly seasoned/roasted potatoes and some fresh greens. I was a little concerned that it would be a little too heavy for me, but it wasn't. The side of greens had the lightest but tastiest dressing I've ever tasted. I couldn't tell what was in it, so I asked - vegetable oil, grapefruit juice and poppy seeds. Brilliant!
Viva Edgar!

I hit up Edgar this morning for breakfast and was nothing short of thrilled! I had the 'salé' which was two poached eggs inside of a toasted tortilla, with a sort of roasted tomato sauce with peppers and caramelised onions covered in melted cheddar. It also came with a goat cheese stuffed pepper (OMG), roasted potatoes (perfect) and a side salad (mixed greens with a garlic-y vinaigrette). Everything was amazing, and I was really impressed that both of the breakfast plates (there was also a french toast dish) were vegetarian - added bonus! It was actually one of the better breakfasts I've had in the Ottawa area. The paninis in the display case also looked delicious, so I'm sure I'll be back soon to sample some.

We picked up some desserts to go and I just ate my fig-cheesecake-honey thing now - mmm. I also got a chocolate-peanut oatbar which I'm sure will be devoured within the next few hours. It was so hard to pick just two of the desserts to bring home - everything looked and sounded awesome.

I have nothing bad to say about Edgar! Can't wait for round two :D

I made my first visit to Edgar this past weekend for brunch, and from the gentleman who gave up his table for my friend and I to the friendly chats with Marysol and her husband at the end, it was an entirely lovely experience! The coffee was excellent, and I took some gorgeous baked goods home for the FH; he loved the Almond Cake. Food review follows! Definitely recommend a trip to Edgar - its very close to the entrance of Gatineau Park, so maybe that could be a double errand? Great work, Marysol and team! Keep it up!

Noo! The location is wrong, haha! It's located at 60, rue Bégin in Hull, not on Edgar street in Ottawa. However shall we fix this, so that everyone can go?

My wife and I still love to come here whenever we get a chance, as the brunch offerings are always interesting and always excellent! If you happen to find the lemon/lime square when you're there, be sure to try it... incredible!!

Pork schnitzel, potato, sauteed cabbage and pork belly with a smoked broth and two poached eggs! Another outstanding dish from Edgar. One thing I love about Edgar is their creatively persistent use of cabbages. They always seem to deliciously incorporate this typically boring vegetable into some of the best dishes I've ever experienced. Yum.

Truly outstanding Dutch baby! Edgar continues to produce some of the best dishes in the area and the Dutch baby is no exception. The pork belly, cheese and apple combo is incredible! Though I did find the dish to be just on the edge of too sweet, if you plan your bites right you will be rewarded with an amazing balance of sweet/salty/smokey/rich/tart flavours.

"Pea Meal" — incredibly delicious dish of chard, Brussels sprouts with smoky pork belly and mustard seed, giant potato croquette, thick pea meal bacon, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce! My wife said this was her absolute favourite of all Marysol's amazing dishes over the years. From what I tasted, I think I agree!

We arrived at 10:10, just after opening (probably the least strategic arrival time possible) and we were seated half an hour later. That people are willing to wait outside in the cold, or stand shoulder-to-shoulder inside, is a testament to the quality and uniqueness found on each plate. In my books this continues to be the Ottawa area's best brunch.

"Mijoté" — a wonderfully delicious brunch plate of stewed tomatoes, onions, peppers, and Italian sausage, tender kale, breaded eggplant, buffalo mozzarella, panini toast, and of course two perfect poached eggs!

When I saw Marysol post on Instagram that one of this weekend's dishes contained chanterelles I had no choice but to visit. What a beautiful dish this was! And it tasted wonderful too. Emmenthal and scape strata, with chard, double-smoked lardons, chanterelle mushrooms, poached eggs, and parmesan.

Excellent!

With both kids at a play date, wifey and I jumped at the chance to get a late brunch. It was still busy when we arrived at 1:30 but we were somehow seated without a wait.

The food was as great as ever! I had the Dutch Baby and also pilfered some of the sumptuous duck from my wife's amazing dish. As usual, Marysol's ingredient combinations are quite magical.

The Dutch Baby and the Heuvos Rancheros have been on the menu for a long time, while the third dish keeps changing. Highly recommend this "third dish" if you can get there in the near future.

I took a salted caramel cookie to go, and two "Mini Eggs" cookies for the kids. Rave reviews all around!

Here is a picture of the wonderful Dutch Baby. Apples, strong cheddar and pork belly on a fluffy round crepe.

I had to try the Dutch baby. It was apples, pork belly and huge chunks of hard cheddar on a big round fully crepe. The pork belly was slightly crisp on the outside and moist. The cheddar and the pork balanced the sweetness of the apples and the pancake crust was SO fluffy and slightly eggy. I need to learn how to make this kind of pancake.

My husband had the Lumberjack breakfast (pictured) which was also a perfect breakfast plate. He made me try a bit of everything on his plate and had a grin throughout his entire meal which is the first time I have seen him like this during a meal! The dish consisted of sausages, maple candied double smoked bacon, red turnip, 2 poached eggs covered in a salty herb sauce, baked beans, fingerlings potatoes, pouding chômeur and toasts. He loved every bite!

Yes, there will be a wait. We have been at the door before and had to leave because we did not have the time to wait. But was it worth it? YES! A truly original breakfast. We also bought a few pastries to go and those were very good, in particular, the lemon beignets.

Another rave for the Huevos Rancheros!! My takeout order, plated at home, is pictured. This meal was a simply delicious combination of flavours. The potatoes, as noted, were perfect.

I heard so many compliments from other customers as I waited for my food and I was sorely tempted by all the baked goods on display at the counter. This is a great place to visit.

This gorgeous little thing is like the love child of a three-way between a home made cinnamon doughnut, pound cake, and lemon meringue pie. There's a hint of tangy lemon curd inside that plays wonderfully with the dense cake and the light cinnamon sugar crust.
