Incidentally, Fox Searchlight is the specialty film division of 20th Century Fox, and is responsible for their more indie-style films. You can see a list here: en.wikipedia.org

Films I've enjoyed in the past include The Full Monty, Boys Don't Cry, Bend it Like Beckham, Thank You For Smoking, Little Miss Sunshine. They're also responsible for I ♥(heart) Huckabees. :-)

2007 Apr 27
Replying. Potential free stuff ROCKS.

2007 Apr 27
Hey Fresh Foodie,

Count me as entered. :)

2007 Apr 27
Sounds fun! Count me in as well.

2007 Apr 27
OK, I'm going to look a potential gifthorse in the mouth by pointed out the irony in Fox having "Indie" films :-)

2007 Apr 27
Count me in too!! (please)

2007 Apr 27
zymurgist, I got that from the wikipedia entry and to be specific, it was "indie-style." :-)

The Fox Searchlight movies I listed earlier are certainly not the usual big budget hollywood fodder. They're smaller productions with real charm. It doesn't change your point of irony of course... Still, Indie is a definite *style* that is not restricted to independents. The same goes for indie music!

2007 Apr 27
I'm in! :)

2007 Apr 27
I am also interested in the possible chance of being awarded with a so-called "movie-ticket", although this all seems highly illogical to me, Captain.

2007 Apr 27
What strikes you as strange?

2007 Apr 28
oh, sorry, I was watching Star Trek whilst writing my post. I was influenced by Mr Spock. I thought someone would have caught on :P

2007 Apr 28
haha.. I understood the allusion, but thought there might be a genuine reason that you found it to be "illogical." :)

2007 Apr 28
Nope. Seems really cool, actually.

2007 Apr 28
count me in!

2007 Apr 29
Count me in too!

2007 Apr 30
I'm in!

2007 Apr 30
I'm in like Flynn!

2007 May 1
Wow.. someone who knows the Flynn reference. You must be reincarnated or something since you are too young to know it firsthand... Let me be the first to welcome you to OFoodies.

2007 May 1
Hello.........red is here!!!

2007 May 2
count me in

2007 May 2
can I be in twice? :)

2007 May 2
Only if FF does his SQL query incorrectly ;-)

2007 May 2
haha... no, no... the number of posts will not affect your chance of winning! (Assuming the number is not zero, of course.) :)

2007 May 2
darn.

2007 May 3
I'm in too!

2007 May 3
Of course, we could all start creating alternate identities on ottawafoodies, and THEN we could enter multiple times...hmmm. Call me Peter.In.Ottawa, Pierre.In.Ottawa, Pietro.In.Ottawa.

2007 May 3
ohh - and I could be Pig, Porker, Sow, Hog, Hoglet, Piggy...that's six more entries for me. I'm sure FF would never notice ;)

2007 May 3
hehe.. yeah, if you created multiple accounts for yourself that might increase your chances. On the other hand, I have a mechanism in place for flagging potential duplicate accounts based on IP address, so I'd probably catch on. :)

2007 May 3
And that my good friend is what open proxies are for.. ;-) Also a tip for all those sympatico high speed people. Unplug your modem (from the power) for 30 seconds, and when you power up you will almost assuredly get a different IP address from the pool. (I've tested a little, and had a different one 100% of time)

2007 May 3
Well, if my duplicate IP sensor doesn't out you, then my AI browsing pattern analyzer will! ;-)

2007 May 3
me too please!

2007 May 7
Count me in. The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (no, not a foodies site :-) ) are quite encouraging.

Replying!

2007 May 8
Replying too!

2007 May 10
I'm in!

(And what's wrong with I ♥ Huckabees? Loved that movie.)

2007 May 10
Nothing's wrong with the Huckabees movie! I only mentioned it separately from the others because I haven't seen it myself. :)

2007 May 11
This contest is now officially *CLOSED*.

Thanks for your participation... I hope to announce winners later today.

2007 May 11
I just spoke with my contact for this movie promotion, and he's agreed that we can give free passes to all 23 people who entered! Everyone wins! ;-)

Here's the fine print, which I asked for while sorting out the details:

"These passes that we are giving out will guarantee tickets for two people, but we cannot save seats for them. All of these screenings are overbooked so if by chance we sell out, there is a possibility they will be turned away.

All of our promo screenings are done this way. I have yet to have a screening in Ottawa, however, sell out. I am especially not expecting this screening in particular to sell out. The only way people can get in to this screening is if they RSVP to the Fox Searchlight website (so far only 6 people), win passes from the radio station, tv station or newspaper we are promoting the film in or from your website.

I would just recommend telling the winners to arrive early as seating is on a first come first serve basis. But not just anyone can attend this screening… just the people our promo partners sent passes to… ie. Ottawafoodies.com."

So, what I'm getting from this is... show up early if possible! :)

I will send emails out later today, which you will need to print and take with you to the show.

Thanks again... this was fun!

2007 May 11
Dang, and here I thought I was special :-)

Thanks muchly. I offered them to my wife to take a friend. Unless any of you want to babysit 2 monsters :-)

2007 May 11
You're all very welcome!

Just a note that people with hotmail accounts might need to check in their SPAM or Junkmail folder (or whatever it's called) for their email. Sender was web @ ottawafoodies.com.

2007 May 11
Thank you!!!!!

2007 May 11
Here's some interesting info about the director, Adrienne Shelly, who was murdered after directing this, only her third, film:

news.yahoo.com

It's very sad, but it makes me want to see it even more...bittersweet, indeed.

2007 May 12
Thanks for putting this together!

2007 May 13
What does everyone think about arranging an Ottawa Foodies dinner before or after the show? I think it would be fun to meet some of you!

2007 May 13
Thanks for the movie passes! Looking forward to seeing the movie! :)

2007 May 13
Pam, that sounds like a great idea! The thing is our babysitter fell through so I wasn't going to go. But if we're getting together I'm tempted to go anyway, alone (wifey says it's okay). Since the movie is at 7pm and we should be there early, I'd suggest going somewhere *after* the show -- maybe for snacks and drinks or something like that.

Can anyone who's more familiar with what's open late on a Tuesday in the downtown core suggest anywhere?

2007 May 14
I'll probably be interested in going for at least a quick drink after the movie. Not sure where though..

2007 May 14
Well, how do we find eachother?

I was going to wear an easy-to-spot dress, but it's supposed to rain tomorrow :(

2007 May 14
I look just like my picture! So does Mark! hahaha...I really don't know..I know I'll be wearing khaki coloured capris if that helps, and I'm tall, like 6'.

Anyone else?

2007 May 14
FF...

Green Tea and Oz Kafe, both on Elgin street are open late and supposed to have decent food. I haven't eaten at either yet, but I was in once very late with a friend who used to work there(Oz Kafe) and just wanted to say hi, and the owners and staff seem nice. Have fun wherever you end up!

2007 May 14
Oz Kafe is fabulous - I've been there and love it!

2007 May 14
Cool. Not much of a website they have there..

What kind of place is it? Just curious.

2007 May 14
Thanks for the tickets!
Have fun!!!

2007 May 14
I want to try Oz Kafe sometime but I don't think tomorrow night is right for it because some of us will want just drinks or a snack. There are loads of places on Elgin so we can delay the decision until we find out how many of us there are. If there are four of us we could go to the Manx -- if there are 18 of us, we'll likely end up at Dunn's or ESD or something.

I'll be easy to spot because I look like a Q-tip in a black jacket. Let's meet up after the movie in the mall just outside the entrance to the theatre.

2007 May 14
I'm sad I can't go because I have a class :(

2007 May 14
I'm having minor surgery on my foot tomorrow after stepping on some glass in my kitchen :( so I'm out.

2007 May 14
Whoever does go, make sure you post a review of the movie and whatever food you get! ;)

(I work late on Tuesdays, so that's why I never tried to get tickets. :) )

2007 May 15
Ok, entrance to the theatre in the mall. I've included a picture of my boyfriend and I, but I likely won't be wearing my glasses :) He's easy to spot though, with all that curly hair.

2007 May 15
Thanks for setting this up! No problems with getting a seat, even at the last minute (was making turkey burgers stuffed with mushrooms and shallots with sweet potato fries)... and free parking to boot! I thought I might have to pay considering I didn't technically pay for admission. It was a good night! I look forward to more like this in the future.

2007 May 16
The movie was very much a chick flick, but an excellent one! Great acting and very entertaining throughout. Several poignant and memorable moments.

It was great to meet some good people from this site whom I didn't already know! :)

If you're curious, we popped over to Oh So Good for "pie" (chocolate truffle cake in my case) afterwards. This was at Pam's suggestion. She and her bf are fun! Adam came along for his piece of the pie and helped us speed-walk to the market. ;-)

Thanks, everyone, for coming out!

2007 May 16
The one thing I thought was lame about this movie was the title. Sure, one-word titles are fashionable, but "Waitress" is pretty generic. Maybe it's a play on words implying she was "Waiting" for her life to improve or just end. I don't know.

Anyway, I think "American Pie" would have been a better title -- except I think it was already taken. ;-)

2007 May 16
Had a great time! Nice meeting a few folks from the site.

Movie was good. I really enjoyed it :)

2007 May 16
Ah - I'm sorry I missed it :( I really wanted to go but didn't get home from work until after 6:30... It sounds like you had a nice time - and pie too - yummy.

2007 May 16
I got stuck at work, too. Now that I'm hearing about the pie, I'm even more disappointed! Hope there will be other occasions for mingling.
