Incidentally, Fox Searchlight is the specialty film division of 20th Century Fox, and is responsible for their more indie-style films. You can see a list here: en.wikipedia.org
Films I've enjoyed in the past include The Full Monty, Boys Don't Cry, Bend it Like Beckham, Thank You For Smoking, Little Miss Sunshine. They're also responsible for I ♥(heart) Huckabees. :-)

zymurgist, I got that from the wikipedia entry and to be specific, it was "indie-style." :-)
The Fox Searchlight movies I listed earlier are certainly not the usual big budget hollywood fodder. They're smaller productions with real charm. It doesn't change your point of irony of course... Still, Indie is a definite *style* that is not restricted to independents. The same goes for indie music!

And that my good friend is what open proxies are for.. ;-) Also a tip for all those sympatico high speed people. Unplug your modem (from the power) for 30 seconds, and when you power up you will almost assuredly get a different IP address from the pool. (I've tested a little, and had a different one 100% of time)

Count me in. The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (no, not a foodies site :-) ) are quite encouraging.

I just spoke with my contact for this movie promotion, and he's agreed that we can give free passes to all 23 people who entered! Everyone wins! ;-)
Here's the fine print, which I asked for while sorting out the details:
"These passes that we are giving out will guarantee tickets for two people, but we cannot save seats for them. All of these screenings are overbooked so if by chance we sell out, there is a possibility they will be turned away.
All of our promo screenings are done this way. I have yet to have a screening in Ottawa, however, sell out. I am especially not expecting this screening in particular to sell out. The only way people can get in to this screening is if they RSVP to the Fox Searchlight website (so far only 6 people), win passes from the radio station, tv station or newspaper we are promoting the film in or from your website.
I would just recommend telling the winners to arrive early as seating is on a first come first serve basis. But not just anyone can attend this screening… just the people our promo partners sent passes to… ie. Ottawafoodies.com."
So, what I'm getting from this is... show up early if possible! :)
I will send emails out later today, which you will need to print and take with you to the show.
Thanks again... this was fun!

Here's some interesting info about the director, Adrienne Shelly, who was murdered after directing this, only her third, film:

It's very sad, but it makes me want to see it even more...bittersweet, indeed.

Pam, that sounds like a great idea! The thing is our babysitter fell through so I wasn't going to go. But if we're getting together I'm tempted to go anyway, alone (wifey says it's okay). Since the movie is at 7pm and we should be there early, I'd suggest going somewhere *after* the show -- maybe for snacks and drinks or something like that.
Can anyone who's more familiar with what's open late on a Tuesday in the downtown core suggest anywhere?

FF...
Green Tea and Oz Kafe, both on Elgin street are open late and supposed to have decent food. I haven't eaten at either yet, but I was in once very late with a friend who used to work there(Oz Kafe) and just wanted to say hi, and the owners and staff seem nice. Have fun wherever you end up!

I want to try Oz Kafe sometime but I don't think tomorrow night is right for it because some of us will want just drinks or a snack. There are loads of places on Elgin so we can delay the decision until we find out how many of us there are. If there are four of us we could go to the Manx -- if there are 18 of us, we'll likely end up at Dunn's or ESD or something.
I'll be easy to spot because I look like a Q-tip in a black jacket. Let's meet up after the movie in the mall just outside the entrance to the theatre.

Thanks for setting this up! No problems with getting a seat, even at the last minute (was making turkey burgers stuffed with mushrooms and shallots with sweet potato fries)... and free parking to boot! I thought I might have to pay considering I didn't technically pay for admission. It was a good night! I look forward to more like this in the future.

The movie was very much a chick flick, but an excellent one! Great acting and very entertaining throughout. Several poignant and memorable moments.
It was great to meet some good people from this site whom I didn't already know! :)
If you're curious, we popped over to Oh So Good for "pie" (chocolate truffle cake in my case) afterwards. This was at Pam's suggestion. She and her bf are fun! Adam came along for his piece of the pie and helped us speed-walk to the market. ;-)
Thanks, everyone, for coming out!

The one thing I thought was lame about this movie was the title. Sure, one-word titles are fashionable, but "Waitress" is pretty generic. Maybe it's a play on words implying she was "Waiting" for her life to improve or just end. I don't know.
Anyway, I think "American Pie" would have been a better title -- except I think it was already taken. ;-)
