Being from Nova Scotia can really make you spoiled when it comes to seafood. Part of our family tradition is a lobster dinner on christmas eve, and that can be pretty difficult to keep up here in Ottawa. The fresh tank lobster here is sometimes quite sickly, even from the real fish markets, like one year when we got it at LaPointe's (Lapointe Fish). For a while we started settling for the flash-frozen-in-a-block-of-ice lobster that supermarkets used to carry. But they became difficult to find.
Last year we bought it from the Merivale Fish Market (Merivale Fish Market) and it was extremely good, though pricey.
As for price, if you are ordering any quantity (e.g. 20 lbs) it can actually be a lot cheaper to look up a fish market in New Brunswick that ships them, and do it that way. Like e.g. Peter's Seafood and Lobster (tinyurl.com/2387qm)
My friend always told me that there are few dishes that Yangtze is very good at. Yangtze's Fried Lobster with Ginger & Shallots is one of the MUST ORDER dishes. Seasonal price. Be reminded that the order of two lobsters in one dish is pricy (around $50+).
Best deal on lobster in town, when it's in season. They even have one clawed lobsters at a discount. Good if you making a bisque, where the meat AND shell is important.
Better than LaPointes Lapointe Fish. Why better ? Better price, sometimes better quality, free parking and you can pick up those sesame/peanut candies while your there. :-)
Sobeys seems to be one of the better spots in the city for Lobster - at least on a consistent basis - true to their roots in the Maritimes, I suppose. In general they carry types of fish and other seafood you may only otherwise find at specialised fish markets. As of this writing they have Lobster on at $8.99 / lb. Only reason I did not buy here is that it's quite a bit further away - but my buddy from Newfoundland told me they were good-looking seabugs.
Currently $10.99 / lb which is not the cheapest price in the city by a longshot but still is not bad. The tank at Carling and Maitland is fairly crowded but the seabugs were lively - and I hand-picked (literally) 3 of the feistier ones for our traditional family xmas-eve lobster supper.
