sizzling black pepper steak - i prefer this dish here than that offered at royal treasure and yangtze. i find chu shing use more black pepper, garlic, onions, teriyaki/blackbean sauce for fuller and stronger flavor; perhaps marinated longer as well. comes sizzling on a griddle. pair this with a bit of rice and mixed chinese greens to soak up the flavors. quality flavor and protein nutrition for the price!

2nd-class treatment, slow service, average food.

Slow and abrupt service. Not crowded at all, but under-staffed and did not treat patrons equally. We waited about 50 minutes before our three dishes - nothing in the least bit complicated - arrived. The galling thing was that four tables of people who arrived after us received their food well before us - with one table of six having a full meal in front of them within five minutes of arrival. The only thing which seemed to distinguish us from the other four tables of people was that we were not Chinese. We were treated in a very second-class way. This sort of obvious prejudice is disgusting!

I had been visiting the chu shing since I was a young man, I had tried everything from tripe and chicken feet, to sung sa gow and shrimp su mi. I had always enjoyed the busy hubbub or the place and enjoyed the people watching. for the last eight years My finance and I had been weekend regulars. to the point of knowing the staff and participating in Chinese new year. well after twenty years of eating there it all changed when they served me bug laced peanut dumplings. now I must admit the bugs were very well cooked but not exactly what I ordered.
So feeling sickened to my stomach. I called for Renee who is the manager. She told me that the cook must not have seen the bugs in the food as it was dark in the kitchen. she then told us we wouldn't have to pay for that dish and also gave us a three dollar discount on the meal. we left the restaurant and will never return. I miss the wait staff, but fell my health is more important. I will never eat at this place again there is a much better place on south bank street with a window into the kitchen that has buch better food.
its not so much the bugs in the food as the attitude of the manager who simply wasn't shocked or apologetic a bout serving bugs.

This is my favorite chinese restaurant in Ottawa! I always go with family or friends! Be careful to make a reservation or come in advance because it can be pretty full on sundays though!
My favorite dim sum dish is the eggplants filled with shrimps. Great chinese broccolis with garlic too!
On the menu, I like everything with duck (soup and then crispy barbecued duck).

Normally, we had family dinner together at home on Chinese New Year's eve. This year (the year of Rat), I didn't take the day off and didn't feel like cooking after work. So, we headed off to Chinatown for family dinner.

Glad that I made the reservation. The place was fully booked. We ordered their specialty from their special menu again:

- Crab meat and sea foam soup
- BBQ chicken
- Stir-fried choy sum
- Salty and spicy shrimps
- Bay scallops with cashew nuts

I think Chinese New Year eve is their busier time of the year. But they didn't have enough staff to handle the crowd. Every one on the floor had hard time to get the server's attention. We waited for an hour to get our food.

Our soup was served by the owner's son who was the host at the door. He told us that this was his first time to serve soup and his dad (also the chef) called him to help out when he was home relaxing.

Overall, each dish tasted good except for the Bay scallops (not that fresh). Again, their BBQ chicken were very juicy and tender (always our favourite here).

Words of Advice: Most of the Chinese will go to Chinese restaurants for dinner on Chinese New Year's eve. So, if you want to eat Chinese food, try not to pick that day unless you don't mind the longer wait.

We took my sister and brother-in-law (from Toronto) to try a few Chinese restaurants in Ottawa. I was hesitant to take them here for dinner since Chu Shing earned a reputation for bad service.

I took my chance any way and went with no high expectation. Surprise! Surprise!!

When we arrived there at 6:30 PM, the restaurant was only half full. This was not a good sign for Sunday (a long weekend).

Later on, we bumped into a friend who is known to be a foodie (basically he eats everything that moves, no kidding!). I felt a lot better since he also picked this place for dinner. I asked him for his recommendation and he told me that most of the non-fish dishes on their Special menu are very good at pretty reasonable price (I think it is either $8.50 or $9.50 per dish on the special menu).

So, we ordered the following from their Special menu (the one in the transparent photo holder):
- soup: Crab Meat and Sea Foam Soup
- Crispy BBQ chicken (this is their chef's specialty) - must order if you come to this place
- Salty & Pepper Shrimps (with head on)
- Stir-fried snow pea tips with garlic
- Bay scallops with cashew nuts

Overall, each dish was very delicious except for the soup. My sister said the crab meat was not fresh and I said the soup taste was vey bland (felt like they added water to fill the big bowl).

The service was not bad. They hired younger waitress and they were more efficient and the rude ones are no longer there. Our waitress came to ask if we wanted more rice without us asking.

The bill was $62 after tips and tax (around $15 per person).

We used to like Yangtze. But not any more! We haven't been back there for dinner for a long time. Chu Shing's food was not bad. But they don't offer good service (I guess they don't care since they have a good customer base). There are so many new Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, Kanata, Orleans and Nepean. But I am sure both Yangtze and Chu Shing have lost some of their business to others. In addition, I do find the place at Chu Shing not clean.

If you were to ask a chinese person where (s)he would go out for dinner in Ottawa, the two places that come up are Yangtse and Chu Shing.

After the overall oligopolistic price increases in the chinese restaurant business in the last year, Yangtse has priced itself out of the league. Chu Shing is the place I would certainly go to. But I know the owner and most of the staff.... so service is not a problem. It's the food, variety and traditional cantonese fare.

I also know the owners and most of the servers at Yangtse and get great service, but think it is rather expensive.

Don't ask me about Palais Imperiale and Mandarin Ogilvie.....(the owners are the same)

I agree. People go here mostly because the prices are a bit lower. The last time we went (a long time ago), we ordered a soup and were enjoying it when the waiter asked us if it was better than Campbell's. Ha! We felt like white trash in a big way. Cheeky bastard. :-)

Today, the turnip cake was very tasty andjust crispy enough. I had all the other usual: shrimp har gao, egg tart, rice roll, pork siu mai. It was hot and fresh even if the selection remains slim.

I agree with the existing comments on dim sum at Chu Shing. I do wish there were a few more options (and I am comparing to Montreal Chinese dim sum spots) but overall the basics are always available (dumplings, rice rolls, spring rolls, chicken feet, bean curd rolls, steamed ribs, egg tarts, BBQ pork buns, tofu dessert, among others.). If asked, the waiters will go see if a dish is available in the back even if it is not being wheeled out yet due to everyone already having a cart.

I agree Dim sum at ChuShing is miles fresher than at Yangtze. I didn't like one thing I ate at Yangtze, our table was done in half the time as we stopped ordering. At ChuShing we order and eat until we can't eat anymore. It just taste fresher

I tend to skip back-and-forth between Yangstze and Chu Shing for dim sum every week.
I didn't have a clear favourite until yesterday. Chu Shing for the win. Every single dish was great.
The shrimp-pork and other dumpings were cooked to perfection, the pork buns were sweet and savoury and the squid in ginger was delightful. Oh, that sauce! Can we talk about the pork rice roll-ups? YUM.(I don't remember any of these dishes' real names, so sorry.)

The service was typical dim sum service. You don't go for chit chat and pleasantries.

we had a had a great time

H being more use to Canadian Chinese was blown away by the fresh flavours of the Cantonese style dimsum and P relished the chrysanthemum tea

everything was tasty esp the grilled turnip cakes and brought back memories of San Francisco and my childhood

lol and I did not even need a drink
all too soon, we were the only ones left and the staff was alternating eating at another table

good to see they weren't eating anything other than what we had

I prefer dim sum here over Yangtze. They have a vast selection, and many dishes I have not seen anywhere else.

The shrimp har gao and siu mai was good, the other people liked it; as well as the pork dumplings. The pork bun was okay.

I particularly liked the curried squid, the tendons, the chicken feet, turnip cake and sponge cake. They fill your water and tea when they see it empty. The servers here don't speak much English, but at least they try. :)

If you don't see a dish on the cart but you are waiting for it, you can request it.

This is our favourite dim sum place (we've tried dim sum around Ottawa, and around the world including Hong Kong). Have been going here a couple of times a month for nine years. We even had our wedding breakfast here.

Wonderful har gow, excellent turnip cake, duck, something called shrimp balls, sticky rice in a bowl, many great dumplings. Nothing really bad. They make a lovely little sweet and sour dipping sauce for the shrimp rolls, wontons, and shrimp balls--it's thin and vinegary. I miss it everywhere else.

After 11am you can order from menu and get veggies. 10-11:30 mostly dumplings and simpler items on the carts, later on there's duck, pork, more small selections of delightful Chinese vegetables.

After 11 am weekends (depending on the weather) there tends to be a line.

The service is funny--chilly until they get to know you then it's like family. I love people watching there and we run into all kinds of cross section of people. Wonderful mixed crowd--family friendly, great for a date.

It's a bit scruffy and sticky but nothing worth being squeamish about.

Note, they do a less extensive dim sum during the week, great way to impress out of town visitors with a cosmopolitan treat.

Hot and Sour soup. Could have been spicer but the texture was smooth and thick. It contained the usual ingredients of soft tofu, sea mushrooms, bamboo shoots and egg drops. It is a very good option for hot and sour soup in Ottawa.

Their Crab Meat and Sea Foam Soup was the worst I have tried in Ottawa. Crab meat was not fresh and the soup taste was bland. I tasted that water was later added to the soup.

So, don't bother ordering this soup here.

I think this dish is also Chu Shing's specialty. Shrimps were big and taste was yummy. We all gave a good rating to this dish.

I will order this dish again if I come here for dinner next time.

When you come to Chu Shing for dinner, their BBQ chicken is a MUST ORDER dish. This is their specialty and they do a very good job. No other Chinese restaurants in Ottawa can beat this in my opinion. Very crispy skin with juicy chicken meat (marinated)!

This is the stir-fried snow pea tips with garlic. The taste was not bad, but can't compare with the one I tried at New Sky in Toronto.

This is the Bay scallops with Cashew Nuts. There were a good number of bay scallops. Taste was pretty good. Another recommended dish for you as well. I think the price tag is $8.50.
