Haggis [General]

2007 Nov 29
As a person of scotish decent, I never had Haggis. I even been to Scotland during the Commonwealth Games in 1986 (brother inlaw was on cycling team and I was on honeymoon).

Brodies, scotch pies, bannock, sasuage rolls, and a wack of wiskey , but no haggis. Go figure.

I almost bought one from 'The English Butcher", who used to be out by the airport here.

Now I'm on a mission. This Robbie Burns day WILL have Haggis on my table.

Anyone know a good local source ? Ill even make my own, if I can source a sheeps stomach !!

Hmmm... our listing here only mentions the Glebe Meat Market (Haggis) plus some restaurants. A Scotch-descended friend who hosts an annual Robbie Burns day party said good things about Orlik's, which has since gone under. According to the forum discussion here: ottawafoodies.com/forum/96 Mr. Orlik himself is in charge of the butcher counter at Savory's in Bayshore Mall.

But now I'm thinking that Savory's is closed too. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

re: Haggis, don't get your hopes up too much. It's just a fancy name for meatloaf! ;-)

The Scottish and Irish store in Bells Corners has Haggis for sale according to their web site

Yes, Savory's in Bayshore is closed.

Many years ago I bought a haggis from one of the butcheries on the Byward Market strip, it might have been Saslove's but there used to be another one there that is now closed, so I'm not sure. I remember thinking it was pretty good, so I'd encourage everyone to try it out.

I've had haggis at The Glen in Kanata and found it quite tasty. If you can't do it yourself at home that's always an option, but Robbie Burns Day celebrations there fill up quite quickly!

Okay - I usually love a great food photo - but that haggis photo is really scary food porn - I had to avert my eyes... and it make me feel a bit ill - yikes!!

I have a Scottish friend whose only comment on haggis is: "Scottish people don't eat that - it is just for the tourists."

I've had haggis at the Highlander. It was pretty dry, but still tasty. The best Haggis I've ever had was from the former executive chef at the Chateau Laurier. He ran a place called The Wheelhouse View Restaurant in Prince Edward County for a while (and I dated his stepson). If you can find his haggis, I highly recommend it ;)

I found the Haggis at the Glen to be very yummy (in a bland Scottish sort of way) but disappointing because it didn't look anything at all like the one in the photo here. Hmmm, did I see a sign up for it at Aubrey's Aubrey's Meats ? Or was that elsewhere?

we've gotten haggis from the glebe meat market. it is well made and they will explain how to cook it and what to serve with it.

Z: It's true! The one in the picture up there looks quite a lot more tasty. The haggis that I had at The Glen was the fried variety, so it was a bit breaded/dusted/somethinged.

I would call to confirm that what the scottish & irish store is selling is not canned haggis, for this is a thing far beyond what real haggis is. And yes, there's such a thing.
