Went here Jan 2017 for dim sum. The place was packed and bustling, which is a pre-requisite for me for good dim sum. They had the push carts. For Ottawa (I am from Vancouver, so am an admitted dim sum snob), it is a good pick if you have a dim sum craving. I've also been for dinner, and they do a good job of that too. This place is a Hong Kong/Cantonese type establishment so don't expect too authentic if you are going to order more Mainland China-type dishes.

We were on our way to World Burger when we passed this place and decided to try it out. The place was packed with Asians so we figured it had to be good. They were serving dim sum. It was so noisy that we thought the person said "shrimp" when it turned out to be squid. Deep fried, greasy, tough, cold squid. Next dish was a deep fried pork in a pineapple sauce. Thought I was going to lose a couple of teeth the meat was so tough from having been in the deep fryer too long. We next got the shrimp dumplings which were worth the visit. Beautiful, pillowy, delicious shrimp dumplings. Given that we had only enjoyed one of the three dishes we decided to cut our losses and leave. I don't think I'll be back.

I hate when restaurants refuse to cook
the food I bring from home.....

You could have asked for a glass of hot
Water and put the jar of baby food in that.

I would never ask a restaurant to take away
and cook food for me. Her attitude may be
Due to your requests.

I asked the server if she could warm up my baby's food in the microwave. She looks at me and says very rudely that it is very busy now so she will not do it. I can understand her rudeness if I was rude myself or pushy, but I was not. If she would have said that she will do it when she has the chance, then I would have been ok. I don't normally do this, but this server was something out of a movie. Unbelievably ignorant and rude. It was very embarrassing the way she treated us. There are other chinese restaurants in the city that gives really good service. This restaurant is horrible.

Wow! Did the server poke you in the eye with a chopstick or something?

Didn't even make it to ordering, server was so rude we had to just walk away...i heard there's a new owner, perhaps (s)he should look at how the servers provide service...the worst i have ever experienced....i would advise people to skip this restaurant.....

My band's jam space is near slack road on Merivale. After practice (~11:00pm) on Friday, 4 of us decided to get some food. Since two of my band members are Egyptian, they weren't down for shawarma - since they eat similar creations at home all the time. We drove around for like 20 minutes looking for a half decent, thai, indian, etc etc (hopefully ethnic, but not fast food). After a few fails (due to restaurants being closed), I was able to convince everyone to check out the sketchy looking Lichee View Restaurant.

It's pretty sketchy. The service is.. let me say 'curt'. But I think that is to be expected with many traditional Asian restaurants, or so I’m told. The venue didn't exemplify cleanliness either. All of these things would have sent me out the door very quickly, except for the fact that at 11:00pm the restaurant was full... of Asians. They must be doing something right. I have a feeling that I don't want to see what Ottawa Eatsafe has to say about this place...but alas that is totally unfounded, and perhaps ignorant. I'm going to remain in my state of bliss.

So we proceeded to order... The menu prices are extremely reasonable. You’re looking at between 3.50 and 6.50 for most dishes. We ordered 6 dishes and 4 pops. 5 out of 6 dishes were winners.

We ordered: [in the order they arrived out our table]

Chicken Slices in Sesame Sauce: For the love of God, never serve this food. 3 pieces of random chicken parts, served chilled, skin and fat included, topped with a sesame sauce that looked like poutin gravy, which was served with a small side of this rancid fermented carrot and cabbage salad. Yikes! At 3.50 split 4 ways (and with 5 other dishes on the way - which turned out fantastic - we erased that experience from our collective memories.

Dim Sum is best with a number of folks so you can get a number of different dishes to share.

But ... I went it alone and was quite pleased.

The highlight is not in the picture. Beef brisket noodle soup. Came with lots of udon noodles in a rich beefy broth. Ample shards of nappa cabbage and the best part was the roasted red chili bits, Szechuan peppercorns and the slick of chili oil on top. Nice heat.

Others were : Fried egg noodle with bean sprout. OK.
Chinese greens with oyster sauce. Yumm
Sticky rice in leaves. Mystery meat inside rice was tasty. OK
Fried pork dumplings. Big and meaty. (One is missing in the pic).

Lots of left overs.

So, as mentioned below, I was eager to try Lichee View given the vegetarian/vegan options that Johanna mentioned in her review. All I can say is "Hallelujah!" I'd given up on finding vegan dim sum in Ottawa and relegated myself to ordering off menus while everyone else enjoyed tasty nibbly morsels. Today, I had the vegetarian spring rolls, mushroom dumplings, steamed greens, steamed mushroom noodle rolls, and sesame balls. Everything was very tasty and filling.

The staff were friendly, helpful and willing to double check on ingredients, and the carts rolled by with new selections regularly. The general cleanliness seemed decent; though, I didn't check out the bathroom.

The bill for four of us came to $63 which was reasonable given how much food we ordered and how hungry we were. I won't jump the gun and favourite this place yet, but we'll be back.

I also left room today for some mango pudding with condensed milk (a change from our usual dessert of sesame balls). More yum.

A change of pace today left me with room for Ja Leun pictured at right, aka Chinese donut rice noodle roll. This was the highlight of today's dim sum, crunchy, freshly fried, a good sprinkling of sesame seeds, green onions and served with hoisin sauce and soy sauce. It is a filling dish but absolutely delicious, so much so that I've been thinking about it on and off the rest of the day...

Totally agree. I was super excited to read about the vegetarian options! I thought I had to go to Toronto for those. I just emailed my brothers to see if they want to head over next weekend.

Holy #$@% Johanna... your review makes me want to go there NOW. And your pics aren't crappy, they're EVIL.

Vegetarian spring rolls with plum sauce: substantial, toothsome rolls with a great, flaky wrapping, one serving between 2 people just never seems to be enough but one must leave room for the next trolley...

2011 Nov 21
Cuttlefish in curry sauce: if you like squid then this one is hard to share, with the cuttlefish cooked tenderly, the sauce flavourful and gently spiced but not "hot"...

2011 Nov 21
Cheung fun: steamed rice noodle rolls with mushrooms and a few other vegetables, absolutely divine if you're a mushroom lover but I find you have to ask for them: somehow the rice noodle rolls sit on the lower level of the cart and are never pointed out unless you ask about them... (and again, this pic doesn't do them justice!)

Steamed mushroom dumplings for those of us who can't get enough fungi... yes, these taste nth times better than my crappy pics!
