Post-Proposal Restaurant [Food/Vendor]

2008 Jun 10
I'm looking for a restaurant in walking distance of the Parliament / Sparks Street area to go to after a (hopefully) successful marriage proposal.

I've tried searching, but I'm only coming up with lunch places.

I'd prefer something with generic food (sandwiches, burgers, etc.) Ideally a little bit upscale, but nothing to much since due to the weather the clothes we'll be in will be less than formal.

Can anyone help me out?

Jazzoo would be an ideal place on paper, as it advertises what you described. However, it has gotten some dodgy reviews, so it might be a gamble.

What about the Chateau Laurier just down the street from Parliament? It would certainly be upscale.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help with full-on suggestions -- just thought I'd get the ball rolling with some names.

And lastly, best of luck with the proposal!

Metropolitain Brasserie? Because it's a brasserie the dress code is fairly loose. Food's good: a bit pricey, but good.

CuriousDiner I recently went to Jazzoo on Sparks but am reluctant to recommend it for a special occasion. I didn't have much luck with the special I ordered although I have been reassured the à la carte items are a sure bet. I just don't like recommending somewhere until it passes the taste test...

As for other spots to explore I would also include Saurian's suggestion of the Château Laurier - Zoé's Lounge might be a good spot to try. I think the dress is more business casual but it's always an option.

If you are looking for somewhere on Sparks I can recommend L'Ange Café between Metcalfe and O'Connor. They serve soup and sandwich type meals nice fare at reasonable prices. They are now open on Friday and Saturday evenings. Also on Sparks near Canada's Four Corners is Parliament Pub. They serve nice meals and are reasonably priced.

Another suggestion would be the Black Bear Pub on Bay near Queen. As the name suggests it is a pub so the menu includes burgers, delicious fish and chips, and other pub fare. The atmosphere is casual but the meals are tasty and reasonably priced.

I know you mentioned you were looking for burger type restaurants but there is a Baton Rouge on Albert, Suisha Gardens on Slater, and Tosca in L'Esplanade Laurier.

Best of luck with the marriage proposal!

Thanks a lot for the suggestions.

In order to maintain the surprise, I've decided to tell her we're going to go to one of the local pubs to the downtown area, but instead we'll be going to the Fish Market over on York. We'll have to drive over, but that's ok. She's been wanting to go there for a while, so it'll be an added surprise.

Now to see if I can keep up the fib

Curious Diner - PLEASE Don't go to the Fish Market (I beg of you). As others here will no doubt back me up... It isn't a great spot at all. It is more of a tourist trap than anything else. Tacky decor, and poor quality of food, and in the end overpriced for what you get.
:-(

For this occasion, may I suggest "The Buzz" on Bank. I was there for a recent dinner and it was great! They offer a menu with enough variety, and they are not expensive. You can even get a decent bottle of bubbly from Australia called "Seaview" for about the cost of a regular bottle of wine (around $ 30). They have great apps, salads, mains and even a selection of burgers, wraps and sandwiches.

They open everyday for dinner at 4:00 PM, (Sundays they serve Brunch until 3:00 PM) and the atmosphere is more casual than many of the upscale downtown restaurants yet they have great food, wine & service (and you won't have to worry about what you are wearing). She will be be impressed, and afterall this is something the two of you will remember and talk about for years to come.

Check out my recent review at www.ottawafoodies.com and check out "The Buzz" Website at www.thebuzzrestaurant.ca

The Website will give you a lot of info you can see photos, check out their hours, menu (and prices) as well as how to contact them (if you call ahead and make a reservation, and tell them what the occasion is, I'm sure they'll make sure you have a great table).

And they are also featured in the Entertainment Book... so if you have a membership, there is a savings of $ 16 per couple (see book for details).

Cheers!

I'll echo F&T's sentiments re: The Fish Market. The first thought that popped into my head was "No!" ;)

Wasn't Restaurant Thing pressured into removing their Fish Market listing because the negative reviews were so scathing? The only other restaurant I can think of that gets such consistently negative reviews is Oreganos.

...and yet I remember the complimentary mackerel pate at the Fish Market being quite nice. (Just checked their online menu and it now seems to be a salmon pate.)

Even though the Fish Market may not be to your taste, there certainly are people in Ottawa who love the place. I consider it to be better value than some of the suburban chain restaurants I've been to, and I'm sure those aren't being kept in business by tourists. CuriousDiner is choosing that restaurant specifically because his belle has made it clear that she wants to go there. It is possible that she would enjoy the Fish Market more than any other location, maybe for reasons unknown to us. Go with your gut, CuriousDiner... and bonne chance!

BTW, does it concern you that your fiancee might read this site and catch wind of your little fib! ;-)

I won't 'dis' the Fish Market, but I will instead say that Lapoint's, just across the street has pretty good seafood, of the same variety as Fish Market (i.e. fish and chips, lobster etc). Also if romance is in the air, the food is mediocre (last time I was there) but you can't beat the ambiance of Vineyards (in the basement of The Fish Market). Back when I was single, took many a date there...

Ditto with the Fish Market. I only went there once and although I got excellent service the food was less than spectacular. Sadly the one thing the restaurant scene in centretown is lacking is a good fish place. If your girlfriend likes seafood the malpeque oysters at Big Daddy's are good and I understand Whalesbone on Bank is outstanding.

Agree with Pete. Lapointe's across the street is much better for fish.

2008 Jun 12
I too will say a big nega-tory to the Fish Market. It's not quite as bad as Oregano's, but getting there.

La Pointe's is waaaaaaaaaay better.

Just think, years from now, when you want to go back and reminice about the big night you proposed, the food will still be decent.

I will recommend two restaurants neither of which I have been to. However, I am getting married in September and we are doing a morning wedding and lunch so we will be choosing between these two restaurants for our first dinner together as a married couple.

I have heard wonderful things about both which is why we will celebrate there:

Domus

Signatures Restaurant on East Laurier (its starting to get a little further away for you though).

Hello again! I realized that I completely neglected to follow up on this.

The important thing is that she said yes. We ended up at the Fish Market, and she was glad to give it a try, but didn't like it enough to have us going back. Luckily, a friend of mine knew we were going there and had pre-ordered us a bottle of champagne (not on the wine list) which was spectacular.

So even if the meal was inadequate, at least we were too bubbly to notice.

CONGRATULATIONS!

It was nice of your friend to arrange for the bottle of champagne, and even nicer for Management to make sure that they accomodated that request.

Please share with us your many "foodie" stories to come now that you are engaged... Food is such a big part of the Pre-Wedding / Wedding time.

Cheers!

YAY! Congrats.

Oh well, nuts to the meal -- you got the girl!

Congrats to you! And if you have the wedding in Ottawa, do pop by if you need recommendations for food vendors. Lots of us have advice on that.
