came for multiple work celebrations this week. They have done some upgrading, which is nice to see, although it is now impossible to see what they have on tap. It would be really nice if they kept beer lists on the tables, but how can you go wrong just ordering Guinness? I ordered poutine, and it was pretty decent - above my expectations. I was hoping they could do it with sweet potato fries, but our server warned us that because of their cash systems it would end up being ridiculously priced (sweet potato fries + poutine charge or something like that). Anyway the poutine was pretty good - real curds, nice gravy. It was maybe a bit heavy on the gravy but still good.

The next day we returned with most of the office, service was great, appetizer/fried things platters were not. No sauce on the wings, which were small and flavourless, frozen spring rolls, chicken fingers, deep fried commercial perogies. Even for chain food this wasn't particularly good. Oh well Guinness still went down fine.

Located in the high-tech parks in Kanata, Barley Mow is the favorite place for many Kanata hi-tech engineers. The atmosphere here for Friday lunch was very good. The place was fully packed and noisy. Beer on every table. Oh yes. It is Friday!

It is quite interesting to see some of the old faces that I haven't seen for many years. It is great to see them here at Barley Mow. A bunch of Alcatel-Lucent folks, plus many from the Kanata Hi-tech parks.

Our group (of 10) ordered different dishes frm the menu. Few ordered the Barley Mow Fish and Chips ($11.99 for Blue Code; $15.99 for Halibut). Some ordered the Barley Mow Signature Burger ($8.99). Some ordered spicy Malaysian Chicken Noodle ($11.99). I ordered Hearty Chicken Club ($10.49) and added Caesar Salad to the plate for additional $2.00. It seems that everyone was happy with the pub food. For me, it was okay. The bread was kind of dry. The caesar salad was tasty though (but not enough). The fries was good, but the size was too short.

They have 4 waitresses (1 behind the bar, 2 waitresses on the floor and 1 bus lady?). I found them quite efficient to handle the full house guests.

Anyway, my colleagues like this place and I have to tag along.

P.S. I forgot to bring my camera. I got enough to carry already (my laptop and my purse) and have no hands to carry my camera bag.

This photo makes it look much better than it was. The batter was nice and crispy but the fish was overcooked and quite dry. The piece was a decent size, but the $15 price tag was far too high for the quality and portion. I ate all the (good) fries and was still peckish later.

The "tartar sauce" seemed to be nothing more than commercial mayo with a few scant bits of chopped pickle.

Overall, a little disappointing after the hype!

Went there to have lunch. I ordered Haddock & Chips, $9.99 (one of their Specials written on the board). Taste was good and the fries (short length) were also not bad.

Surprised that the place wasn't packed on Friday. I guess most of the people had gone to vacation. Service was not impressive though. Our server didn't check on us very often and it took too long for us to get the bill.

A few of the brewers got together for lunch today so I went out and had the Fish and Chips. The fish was absolutely fantastic - some of the best I think I've ever had. They provided one very large piece about the size of a single at The Glen. Beautifully battered in their own Guiness batter. The chips were home-cut shoestring sized fries - not spectacular but certainly very good. All-in-all well done and I'd go back for more.

At lunch today they had 21 taps going and only about 6 of them were megabrew crap. Though I would definitely like to see more Ontario microbrews as I believe they only had 2 (1 if you no longer count Creemore as a Micro since they were bought by Molson). I had the Wellington Cask Conditioned and unfortunately it was off - very, very off and sour. I got a 2nd and 3rd opinion from the brewers. But I just sent it back and did not get charged for it. And 10 minutes later 2 guys at the next table sent theirs back as well.

But still an excellent selection and still one of the city's best spots for beer.
