So, I ordered from here last night using skip the dishes. I did the $20 for free delivery, and what I ordered was 2 chicken samosas, 1 beef, 1 small butter chicken, 1 small goat curry, and 1 butter naan.
My goodness, it was amazing. The samosas had the right balance of spice to meat and other goodies, and were nice and crispy on teh outside. The butter chicken was a bit spicier than I was used to but it made it more enjoyable.
The star of the show was however the goat curry. So packed with flavour, and the goat was incredibly tender. Literally fall off the bone tender, which shows how long and slow cooked it is.
I am pretty sure the next time I want to treat myself, I'll be ordering this agian.
Ordered here last night for the first time.Should have heeded the other reviews regarding the size of the food! Ordered the beef bhuna large (delicious), the Dal Makhani small (very delicious), the chana masala small (okay), 4 naan (delicious and massive), a plain rice, and a 1/2 lb of pakora. There was enough for 2 very filling meals for 2 people.
The owner was extremely friendly, offering samples of some of the food to try to help us decide what to order. Will definitely be returning. Possibly to try some of the marinated meat to BBQ at home myself.
Biggest shortcoming was the lack of tables to eat in, but the owner advised that they would be getting more tables upstairs in the coming months.
While I was waiting for my chicken next door, I went in here for a curry for later. I always try and stop here when I am in the hood. I didn't fancy anything already prepared on the buffet and I was told I could order anything I wanted. Their special Karahi chicken? Except that. Um, lamb madras? No. Try the lamb bhuna. I don't usually eat Bhunas but everything else I have had here has been great and this was no exception. A very heavy, well spiced dish. Very much the oilier style of Indian cooking. $15 plus tax is only mentioned because the portion is huge! I think of this place less as a takeout and more of a stock up.
Waaaaay too much food tonight. First time ordering takeout from Brampton (via skipthedishes) so wasn't calibrated to their portion size.
I'm a pretty big/hungry guy, but their large size portions could easily feed 2 or 3. Since I was stuffed full of fish pakora to start with, I barely made a dent on the mains.
Top left - Karahi Chicken.
Nicely spicy (too much for Mrs Rat). Lots of ginger and some coriander & cardamon.
Top right - Chicken Korma.
Tastes better than it looks. Actually quite a lot of chicken in there but all you can see is sauce. *Very* heavy on the cardamon.
Bottom left - Eggplant Bharta
Fresh and flavorful. A bit more pureed than I like. Decent enough, but I don't think you can beat the smoky, chunky goodness of the version at Light of India / Golden India.
Bottom right - Garlic Naan.
To me this was the biggest disappointment, but Mrs Rat was happy. I thought it was like a store bought naan, chewy but not in the good way a naan should be. To be fair it spent 20 mins in a car between tandoor and stomach.
All in all a successful first encounter, with lots of leftovers for tomorrow.
The quarter chicken leg was tangy and flavourful and served with strips of iceberg lettuce and red onions. Although not the favourite item of my large order, it was still a great bargain for $2.99.
The fish pakora were surprisingly spicy, studded with fenugreek and fried in a lightly spiced batter. Served with some thin slivers of red onion and lime, they were perfectly appetizing and flakey filets of fish. I had ordered these out of curiousity but I definitely won't hesitate to order them again next time!
In my opinion, Brampton Meats is easily one of the best Indian takeouts in all of Ottawa, even compared to some full-sized restaurants. Their portions are generous and the flavours are complex and layered with none of the watered down textures or sauces that plague other Indian restaurants trying to appeal to the masses.
During last week's bout of stifling heat, I decided cooking was out of the question and delivery from Brampton Meats was the perfect solution. Unfortunately, planning out my order on the bus made me completely miss my stop and by the time I realized, I was already at the storefront. So delivery simply became takeout.
As it was my first visit, I hadn't realized how small the location was and immediately felt sorry for the kitchen staff as it felt like 35C inside and out. The friendly lady at the cash register patiently explained most of the dishes to me and I proceeded to order the chicken quarter leg (at only $2.99, how could I resist trying?!), fish pakora, lamb bhuna and palak paneer, along with 2 orders of naan.
The order itself took about 20mins and I was definitely not disappointed when I unwrapped all the food at home. The lamb bhuna had a generous portion of large, tender chunks of lamb in a thick, deliciously spicy sauce which was perfect for mopping up with the naan. The palak paneer had a great lightly-chopped and wilted texture of cooked baby spinach, flecked with bits of ginger throughout, which was a welcomed contrast to the puree-like sauce generally served by most Indian restaurants in Ottawa. It also had a large serving of dense, creamy cubes of paneer, much more than I expected! The portions were incredibly generous and could have been easily shared by 3 people.
My girlfriend and I had a chance to try this place and we were happy we did! The lamb madras was deliciously rich with very tender bone in meat. I do like bone in curries better. The boneless chicken karahi was also very good but not as spicy as the staff had warned. At all. The butter chicken, was proclaimed to be the best she ever had and she knows her butter chicken. The plain Naans were great as well with just the right chew and hint of sweetness. I will definitely go back and try a bunch of their other stuff including the excellent goat pickle. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
After reading the praises being sung about this place, we stopped by yesterday. We bought three different chicken legs which we will have tonight. We also bought a tikka pizza and a couple of chicken samosas. I do believe that pizza is the best pizza I have ever had in my life. The crust was perfect as were the toppings. it was unbelievably good. The samosas not so much. The filling was good but we found the wrappers to be very heavy. I am looking forward to the chicken legs. I can't remember what they were called other than one was not spicy, another medium spicy and the third one is the spiciest one they sell. Not very edifying, I know. The chap who served us said that we will never buy chicken legs anywhere else after trying his. We shall see. They were a great price - a bit over $5 for the three.
Popped in on my way home from flight school. I got a small butter chicken, small goat curry, and small lamb vindaloo. I also got two garlic naan breads. The lamb is right now in my fridge for lunch but I scarfed down the other two. First things first, tons of flavour in sauces I found. A good hefty amount of spice too. Been about half an hour and my lips are still numb, but in a good way. I second WooKstah on the bone goat, but it wasn't as bad as theirs it seems.
Decided to organize a take-out run with a few co-workers this past Thursday. Order included 3 non-veg thali, 2 veg thali, med chicken curry & rice, med goat vindaloo & garlic naan, paneer tika wrap, and dahi bhalla. Everyone who ordered said they would definitely do this again, and several others asked to be included for the next take-out run based on the smell of the office alone.
My only complaint was with the vindaloo; while the sauce was *amazing* ... perfectly spicy, and yet extremely flavourful, the goat was mostly bone. Don't get me wrong ... while don't expect boneless, some meat would have been appreciated. However, I will definitely be back to give some other dish a try based on this experience.
In a somewhat separate section from the takeout food counter, there is a refrigerated butcher display case with several flavours of premarinated chicken legs. I asked for two of the ones marked "spicy." These aren't huge legs, but they do come with the hip bone attached so it adds up to a decent portion. About $7 for both.
I grilled them up this evening to a safe internal temperature of 74ºC and wow, what a flavour explosion! Deep tangy spices, a lively level of heat, and a wonderfully succulent interior made it impossible to choose which one I liked more. The cost would add up for a crowd, but if you're cooking for a small number of people you'd be hard pressed to find anything else so tasty in the world of ready-to-cook meats.
Comes in one size, large (and heavy with toppings).
Tasty chunklettes of tikka chicken, green pepper, purple onion ... and .... optional fresh diced green chilis !
Crust was made with same dough they use for naan bread. Fluffy chewy goodness.
Massive amount of pizza for $18.99+tax. Quite a deal compared to the $28.05+tax for a large Carlo's Special.
Only negative thing to say is I like my crust well done and a bit crispy and it wasn't. Nothing a few minutes on my pizza stone in the oven couldn't fix. This also re-freshened the pizza from the 20 min. car ride.
I will be back to try the Butter Chicken Pizza.
July 4 2016 edit. Last one I had was perfectly cooked on the bottom. The place was less rushed as well.
Came with 2 meats (butter chicken and bone-in goat curry) + curry chick peas + raiti + basmati rice + naan + gulab jamun. (and a little shredded lettuce in a foam cup .. huh?)
Butter Chicken ++ (tangy, tomatoey, creamy)
Curry Goat + (good ... eggplant ? or other veg in there?)
Chick Peas +++ (best I had .. long time ? .. ever ?)
Raiti -- (I'll ask for extra rice, next time)
Rice ++ (a little ghee and a few whole spices)
Naan ++ (from a tandoor, nice size)
Gulab Jamun +/- (nice taste & texture, a bit small)
Overall .. similar (quality & quantity) to Indian Express.
Take-away version comes in a (flimsy) plastic tray thingy and slid into a funky box. Needs a little reheating in microwave.
Sorry ... Waaaaay too hungry to remember to take picture of thali
I was intrigued by the fish pakora... and they are delicious.
This was a pretty generous starter (especially if you scarf it down yourself while waiting for Mrs Rat to come home). Those chunks are all solid fish fillets, fried in a spicy gram flour batter. They come accompanied with a mint/chilli/yoghurt dip which has a nice kick, and what I thought was shredded onion but wasn't (maybe radish?).
Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed it and will order it again.
