To Steve Beckta:

I may take you up on your offer as we were marking a special occasion which may explain, in part, why we felt let down. If I do, I will send you an email directly. Thank you for your response. You are truly a class act.

Dear Felinefan: Thank you so much for dining with us for brunch at Gezellig this past weekend. I'm so sorry that everything was not as perfect on a couple of your dishes as the others. I'm thrilled that our team did the right thing and replaced the items that were not cooked properly or were not hot enough for you, and did not charge you for them. But you are absolutely right that they should have come out perfect the first time. I appreciate you letting us know what was not right so we could do something about it. I only hope you can forgive our mistake and give us the opportunity to do it better on another occasion. I would love to make another reservation for you personally to make sure everything is as good as you had hoped the first time around. Please email me if you would be open to another experience with us. I promise it will be great. With many thanks,

Steve Beckta

We went here for brunch today and we somewhat disappointed. Of the first two items, the huevos were a big hit. I could have licked the plate. Absolutely amazing. The dirty mac and cheese was supposed to come with a soft egg. What came was an egg with a near solid yolk. They brought a new egg but by then the mac and cheese was 75% eaten. The second courses were a burger and the ham Benedict. The burger meat was a weird shape and didn't fit the bun, the fries were barely warm and they were limp. New hot, crispy fries were brought. The ham Benedict came on a bun that was so hard I could not get a knife through it. I did not eat it. Upon turning it over, it was very dark and it seemed that it had been sitting on a heating element too long. The potatoes were lukewarm, new hot ones were brought out. Too bad, really, because by the time new spuds came out the rest of the plate was almost finished. Dessert was offered, but we declined. They voluntarily adjusted the bill and only charged for two dishes, not the four which we appreciated. To be fair, they also offered to bring us totally new dishes to replace the ones we were disappointed in. So, very acommodating but I would rather they had gotten everything right the first time. We did tip the waiter on what the total bill would have been.

We decided to go to Gezellig last night for date night, having never had dinner there. We had previously been for brunch when Gezellig had first opened, but had not yet made it for dinner. For some reason we are far more likely to head to Beckta or Play. I'm glad we finally went, because we were not disappointed.

I had the scallop appetizer, while my husband had the beef tartar. The tartar was aggressively seasoned with cumin, which we thought was great, but if you're not a cumin fan, it may be a bit overwhelming. For mains, my husband had the grilled octopus and I had the gnocci. My husband loved the octopus, but did say that one of the tentacles was overdone, but the rest was cooked perfectly. I can concur that it was delicious! I was incredibly satisfied with the gnocci; if you've ever been to Play and been disappointed that your small plate was not enough of the good stuff - get the gnocci main at Gezellig. Yum!

We shared the crème brule for dessert, which was amazing. My only minor complaint was that the latte that I had ordered came super cold. This has happened a few times before at Play as well, maybe they sit for too long before they're sent up? Regardless, everyone was so kind and fixed it right away!

Kudos to Gezellig. I just got this which is a report on the Westboro Region Food Bank which in turn is part of the First United Church 2014 Annual Report.

"Beginning in Septemeber 2014, Gezellig Restaurant has committed to providing 50 single portion meals to the Westboro Region Food Bank once a month. These meals are distributed to our single clients who receive 42% of the hampers we distribute."

What a wonderful thing it is that they are doing. All the more reason to support them as they in turn support the less fortunate among us.

Hi Felinefan: Thanks so much for dining with us at Gezellig recently and for taking the time to post about your experience. While I'm thrilled you enjoyed many aspects of the meal, I'm really sorry that you didn't enjoy the desserts. I will absolutely follow up on this with the chef and I hope we can have you back in soon for a meal that is all highlights. Please let me know if I can make your next reservation personally so I can thank you for the feedback and apologize for our mis-steps the other day. Next time dessert is on me! I can always be reached at sbeckta@beckta.com

Many thanks!

A friend and I came here for lunch today. She had the pork sandwich and I had the fish and chips. Both were excellent. I wish I could say the same thing about dessert. She had the Butterscotch Pot de Creme and I had the Fried Apple Pie. The Pot de Creme was huge but not very good. It lacked flavour and it was very stiff, like a pudding with too much gelatine in it. My friend had maybe three bites and that was it. My pie was served on "Sucre a la Creme" which, given the warm pie sat on top of it, I expected this to be warm. Instead it was stone cold as though the plate with the Creme a la Sucre had been sitting in the fridge. This cold sauce, which also had the misfortune to be grainy, only served to cool the pie down rather quickly which was too bad. I love warm apple pie. The accompanying gelato however was excellent. So a mixed bag. I must add that the server did offer to replace the desserts but we waited what felt like a long time for them and by this time it was 2 o'clock and we wanted to be on our way so we declined. It won't stop me from going back as this is the first time I have ever been disappointed with anything I have eaten there but I did think the desserts were not up to their usual standards.

I brought a girl here for a date last week for lunch and I couldn't have picked a better place. Food and decor is outstanding and the service is excellent and non pretentious. Had a great time, definitely a great place for a date as it's an awesome atmosphere. Had the salad and beef tartare, excellent value for 20 dollars. I can definitely see why the reviews are so good :)

Had a wonderful meal at Gezellig over the weekend.

As always, the service was top-notch. Given the ownership, of course it didn’t extend solely to food service but overall service, e.g. I had our server go twice to the coat room to first fetch get my pashmina and later my coat as I was seated in a drafty spot. There was no hesitation whatsoever and items were always delivered with a smile.

I had the winter salad as my starter, as did another friend. Although watercress was a nice change from regular greens, there was nothing outstanding about the salad and I didn’t quite feel it was good value for money ($14). My friend was equally as disappointed. The beet butter brushed at the bottom was lovely but apart from the watercress, the only other elements were a few super thin shavings of apple, some turnip and one small shaving of heirloom carrot. It could have used more. Or rather, I wanted more and ended up eating a lot of bread given how hungry I was.

The true fulfillment came with my main: mushroom and cashew wellington. I didn’t think the cashews added much (flavour nor texture) but the wellington was PHENOMENAL!!! It sat atop cooked greens (rapini) and came with some rich mushroom gravy. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite!

My friends were all very pleased with their orders: beef tartare (an extremely generous portion might I say), roasted parsnip risotto (my friend said it was the best risotto she had ever had), pickerel (cooked perfectly with super crispy skin), and cioppino (seafood) stew.

For dessert, we had brought our own birthday cake so were charged the $3 plating fee (very reasonable). They even gave us gelato – Ferrero Roche gelato!!!!!! YUM YUM YUM!

It was a lovely meal, which came as no surprise whatsoever. Many thanks Gezellig!

We had the pleasure of going to Gezellig for our company Christmas party last night, and it was absolutely wonderful. The chef was able to cater to the various food allergies in our group, the meals were delicious, and we even tried to stump the waitress on an arcane detail ("what makes these belgua lentils?") and she knew everything cold. Thanks again!

The brunch here is, in a word, excellent. The options are characterized as small plates, and are offered individually at prices between $8-$14, or 2 for $20.

Pictured is the Breakfast Biscuit Sandwich which consists of a fried egg, cheddar, sausage, house pickles, spiced ketchup and is served with delicious crispy home fries. This thing was delicious - it was almost like a breakfast slider as the sausage patty was meaty and well seasoned. The biscuit had a nice sweetness to it which paired well with the savory egg, meat and cheese.

My girlfriend also had the Duck Fry up which is a scrambled egg dish with duck, mushrooms, snap peas, cherry tomato, scallion, fingerlings, crème fraîche, and herbs.

I also had the Polish potato soup which was topped with dill pickle, red peppers, and carrots.

Both were also very good with the duck fry up being especially outstanding. My only regret is that I didn't save room for dessert. We will certainly be back.

Was lucky enough to have brunch here the other Saturday. I find it hard to find places offering brunch in the region on Saturdays (much easier on Sundays) so I was thrilled to discover that Gezillwig would be open on both Saturdays and Sundays.

The menu has a mixture of breakfast and lunch choices, we tried one of each and were not disappointed:
- A plate (actually it came in a shallow bowl) with scrambled eggs, two large pieces of chorizo, a fried polenta square, all topped with roasted tomato salsa, two pieces of grilled sourdough were on the side – at first I was not sure of the addition of such a spicy sausage on a breakfast plate but everything worked well together (I should have known!) and I enjoyed this dish very much
- Tagliatelle with a garlic cream sauce with shiitake mushrooms and charred tomatoes – a perfect combination of flavours

They serve Bridgehead coffee which, although I use the beans at home, tasted much better while sitting in this attractive restaurant.

Highly recommend.

I had a lunch at Gezellig with my friends.
Our server was very Pleasant and Professional.
We enjoyed 2 for $20 deal.

I picked pork belly pappardelle
soft egg yolk, peas, grilling onions, baby kale, mint, green peppercorn : it was very delicious. I enjoyed mixing "almost uncooked soft egg yolk" and pasta together. It was very tasty.

cioppino stew
cod, mussels, squid, anchovy, tomato broth, fennel, fingerlings, Italian parsley : my friend from CA said it seems bit odd to see potatoes in cioppino, but over all it was nice stew.

I tried butterfinger : it was very tasty and has silky texture. I found it very sweet. I couldn't finish it so I took it home. I kinda wanted to eat with something that can neutralize my palate. Butter finger was served with soft meringue, but I think dry and crispy meringue with peanut dust would add more texture to the plate. over all, it was very nice dessert.

Ashley, I'm sorry to hear that you found the Butterfinger dessert to be too sweet. Please contact me on your next visit so I can personally help you eat it! :D :D :D

Yes, it is sweet. I don't usually seek out desserts, but when I do I like them to be sweet: baklava, honey soaked fried stuff, caramelized anything. I don't much like fruity desserts.

Sorry it didn't meet your expectations, but I really don't think it's sweeter than any other peanut butter and chocolate confection I've ever encountered. It is certainly less sweet than a Reese Peanut Butter cup or even an actual Butterfinger chocolate bar!

Try the other desserts next time. From what I've seen, they are all excellent here. :-)

Fresh Foodies, when you said "Life is too short not to taste this", I ordered this. Sorry. Too sweet for my teeth. Good that I ordered one to try with my friends. They just said "It is okay".

The butter finger dessert blew my mind. If you like peanut butter and chocolate, this might be the best dessert you ever eat. Life is too short not to taste this. The menu describes it as "peanut butter, white, milk & dark chocolate, graham cookie, chocolate anglaise" but those are just words. Totally addictive. The portion is way too big but you will eat and enjoy every last bite.

The apple-crumble cheesecake was very good and the honey-thyme whipped cream made it cool and unique. Beautiful presentation.

shrimp and grits is one of my favourites here. succulent shrimp, creamy grits, tasty bits of calamari and kale and highlight the wonderful housemade andouille sausage. Yum.
