I'm a huge fan of the lady who sells bagged salad mixes. Plain Romaine or Boston lettuce gets boring after a while, and as a household of two we'd never get through the mountains of salad that would result if we bought whole heads of multiple types of greens at the same time. I think I paid $3 for a bag this morning, and it's much better and fresher than any of the mixes you'll find in the grocery store.
It was already announced long ago that rents were going up to pay for the renos, and I already sent an email to voice my distaste for this. I emailed both my councilor, and the person who at the time (last August) was in charge of the increased fee.

Here is what I wrote :
As a regular at the Parkdale Market I am very concerned about the upcoming renovations - and in particular the extra monthly fee that will be levied against vendors. The last couple of years at Parkdale have been a huge improvement in selection of local vegetables, with a number of new smaller vendors moving in. I'm afraid that issuing a higher levy for stall use will be prohibitive for these small vendors.
The cost of renovations should simply be covered in the regular rents. This is simply the way renting works. If I rent an apartment - my landlord does not charge me extra for upkeep. That's crazy. Upkeep is simply part of the regular rent. What else is the $800/month going
towards for those stalls? They require next to no work or maintenance, notwithstanding the sort of thing you are undertaking right now, which only happens every few decades. The monthly rent these vendors have been paying for years now should be used for the renovations. Very simple.
Overheard some vendors talking about the renovations... they say the city might be looking at incressing their stall rental fees to pay for the renos...
Also, overheard that the Carleton tavern has been awsome with the parkdale vendors, letting them use their water and washrooms. I think I might have to get some salade mix and a nice cold pitcher of Beau's Friday after work! hahaha
Wow there are a lot of local vendors - some that I have never seen there before. I'd have to say that the new regulations are working. There are still lots of non-local, of course, but the situation has improved markedly. Be sure to check the City of Ottawa signage that is posted in each stall - it will tell you what percentage of their produce is local. At least 3 that I saw are 100% local. Many others are 60%
I absolutely love the Parkdale Market. First of all, I find it very handy to have fresh produce (and flowers!) only a few blocks away. With no car, the BF and I try to make as few grocery shops as possible and produce doesn't tend to last that long. The Parkdale Market save us from any wasted produce - we can pick it up fresh every day or so because it is so close!
Also, I am very excited to see the market changes this year with the recent renovations. I hope to see stalls soon with this early spring :)
