Winterlicious in Toronto [Events]

2008 Jan 8
Hello! I have a request for anyone familiar with the Toronto restaurant scene. Since WestJet and Air Canada are in the midst of a $20-each-way sale from Ottawa to Toronto, I have booked a weekend in Toronto that coincides with Winterlicious.

I understand that there are 130 participating restaurants with prix fixe menus ranging from $15-20 for lunch and $25-35 for dinner. The menus and restaurants can be found here: wx.toronto.ca

What I am wondering is: where to go? I am overwhelmed by all the choices!

I have two in mind so far - Byzantium and Canoe but am not sure as to their reputations. If anyone has suggestions to make, it would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

J

I'd recommend beerbistro, that is, if you really like beer and gastropub style dining. I had a very memorable dining experience there a couple of years ago before heading to a concert, they've got a very good beer selection, the food is great and well prepared, the service was good, the atmosphere was funky. Overall, a fun place to go for dinner, with good food. Though, for $35, Canoe might be the place to go to get the best bang for your buck, since dining at Canoe for $35 is... remarkable!

I went down for Summerlicious the year before last, and the dinner at Canoe was indeed awesome. Can't say off-hand what I ate, because my book's at home, but rest assured I felt like my $35 were well-spent.

Hi Jules,

I haven't been to Winterlicious yet although I visit Toronto nearly every year and have sampled a few restaurants and I can recommend one or two. You have to keep in mind though that those $35 meals are for the prix fixe menu so if you want to order something a-la-carte you will have to pay the regular price. But if you can get a prix fixe meal at Canoe it might be worth it. It's one of the top restaurants in Toronto and usually VERY expensive. If you click on the "menu" link you can see what they are serving as the prix fixe menu and plan your trip accordingly.

I have been to Oro and can highly recommend it. It's an Italian restaurant on Elm Street just off Yonge across from the Delta Chelsea. Again it is usually quite pricey but the menu selection is good and the wait staff are knowledgeable and very friendly.

Some other places that might be worth a shot (although I haven't tried yet) include Bar Italia on College Street just west of the Kensington Market. According to a friend who is from Toronto it's a good mid-range restaurant and apparently Kiefer Sutherland's favourite eating establishment while in Toronto. Bb33 is a relatively new restaurant located in the Delta Chelsea hotel. I think it opened 6 or 7 years ago (alright maybe it's not that new!) when the hotel renovated in the early 2000's and has been getting good reviews. Bistro 990 is supposed to be good as well. They are located on Bay near Bloor and also normally pricey but a prix fixe menu might be a good introduction to the restaurant. The Bier Market has also been getting good reviews. They are located on The Esplanade just east of Yonge and not too far from the St. Lawrence Market.

So there are my two cents. I am actually thinking of tying in a trip to Winterlicious or Summerlicious on my next trip to TO and would love to hear how you made out!

Just another note after reading the Winterlicious website that reservations are recommended. If you finally decide to go to Canoe it might be a good idea to make a reservation to make sure you can get a table.

Wow, we were planning to drive there in a few weeks to visit family but that almost makes it worthwhile to fly even with a family of 4! Though we'd have to rent a car on that end and take our carseats with us, so maybe not.

Definitely call ASAP for a reso at Canoe. It's right in the financial district and a pretty hip spot to eat, especially during Winterlicious/Summerlicious.

Wow! Thanks to all for your suggestions. We have decided on Canoe and beerbistro. I know that Winterlicious reservations don't start until January 10th so I am going to make sure to call them first thing tomorrow!

I will post a little follow up when we get back to let you know how our Canoe/beerbistro experiences measured up. We are going to do Canoe for dinner and beerbistro for lunch (hopefully).

I must say that I am besides myself with joy at the idea that this trip coincides with a "foodie festival".

As a side note, when I sent BF the menu for beerbistro he said "Ooh everything is made with beer, it looks delicious. Are we allowed to drink these beers, too?" which make me crack up laughing.

So, how was Canoe?

2013 Feb 20
Did Winterlicious in Toronto early Feb and had a wonderful lunch with a friend at Canoe.

Roasted Squash & Parsnip Soup followed by Slow Cooked Ontario Brisket and we shared 2 desserts; Spiced Chocolate Panna Cotta and Almond Cake. All were very well cooked and nicely presented in wonderful surroundings with a great view for a fraction of the cost of my last dinner there.

Also did a very good dinner at Lee but my favourite dish there was off their regular menu the Singaporean-style Slaw.. yumm

uhmmm maybe should try to plan to do something for summerlicious.
