Looking for good eats in Québec City [Travel]

2007 Oct 12
Hey folks,

I'm going to be in Québec City (actually Sainte-Foy) in the beginning of November, and was wondering if anybody has some favourite (and preferably inexpensive) places to nosh. The co-worker I'm travelling with already has some good poutine joints identified, but one cannot live on poutine for three days!

No matter how much I'd like to.

Quebec City is full of good restaurants. I love that city. I was there with my girlfriend and we had a good time. I suggest this beautiful typical restaurant: AUX ANCIENT CANADIENS www.auxancienscanadiens.qc.ca Good service(the waiters are all womens wearing picturesque Regional costumes). Their wine list is very interesting. Wide selection of good French wines.

Since I love fishes dishes I really suggest Restaurant de Fruits de Mer www.marieclarisse.qc.ca . This restaurant is in the old part of Quebec City, very close to St. Lawrence River. Delicious fresh fish! Good service.

They both sound great; I'll keep them both in mind. Thanks!

Hey im bumping this up cause im going to Quebec City for my first time next week for 4 days. Anything I should not miss while visiting? Those restaurants that Mr. Red posted sound good but any other suggestions?

I'll second www.auxancienscanadiens.qc.ca/

Ate there on my last visit, order "Grilled stag, bison and wapiti tenderloin, cognac and pink pepper sauce" - and it was oh so good. I wouldn't call it inexpensive though, as most main dishes start at around $30 and go up.

Its been a while since I was there last, but we found some great bistros for both supper and lunch around the market. Also the market in Quebec city was fantastic in both selection and price - so I'd check out that vicinity. Auxanciens has got a good reputation and there are quite a few restro's around that area in old Quebec - however those are right on the main tourist strip and I think you can do better for your money if you look around (not sure if the actual food is better worse or equal however).

I have also been to aux anciens canadiens and enjoyed it a lot...but it is definitely high end and pretty pricy. Certainly a unique experience.

Nice, It seems that alot of people from Ottawa know very little or have never been to Quebec city. All though I have also met people from ottawa who have never been to vanier. lol
aux anciens sounds great and Im definitely bringing back a haul of chili's from the market!

You've got to go to a Chez Ashton (www.chez-ashton.com/). Poutine and greasy burgers. And drinks still come in frigging styrofoam cups.

I love it.

Galvaude avec Fromage is so good. It's Thanksgiving dinner, in poutine form.

Wait a minute...did you say "Thanksgiving dinner, in poutine form"?! Momomoto you gotta tell us more than that!! haha

I took an actual picture of it (gastronomical tourist that I am), but I don't have it on me. Here's the one that's on the webpage.

That, my friend, is galvaude avec fromage: poutine topped with chopped chicken breast and canned peas. It's frigging delicious.

I've thought long and hard about why it's so good, other than the fact that it's Thanksgiving in poutine form, and I came to the realization that galvaude avec fromage magnifies the poutine texture I crave. The chicken is firm, yet yielding, like the curds; and the peas are soft, like the inside of the fries.

I think about poutine far too much.

I think about poutine far too much.

No such thing, Momomoto.

On the other hand, my mom did fries with gravy, chicken and peas when I was young. Missing the curds though.

Sounds good...

Although my vision of french fries, cranberry sauce, cheese curds and turkey gravy also seemed like a good idea...to me!

Tracinho - if you are going to go there you better throw some stuffing on top too!

Kinda sounds like Newfie fries to me, fries, gravy, dressing, maybe cod tongues and put some peas in there to make it "deluxe".

I highly recommend making the 15-20 minute trip to Ile d'Orleans. Getting more touristy but still with lots of local fare. All kinds of foodie stuff, and excellent restaurants. Not nearly the danger of spending more than $200 for mediocre 'tourist' gourmet as in Q.C. And fun! Just google it! There are lots of good restaurants in Q.C. but alot of tourist traps also...Spent my honeymoon here many moons ago and go back regularly.

Tracinho - That sounds awesome. I'm sure that you could get it at, like, La Banquise or something. Or at least suggest it!

Definitely needs the stuffing on top, though. I agree.

ohh ya, turkey, cran and stuffing poutine with pan gravy thickened with turkey livers... This is turning into somthing now!
Thanks momo!

We passed by Aux Anciens Canadiens. They posted their lunch special menu (Table d'Hote with wine included for $19.99) outside. If I came with my husband only, I would stop at this restaurant. But the group just walked fast and I had to catch up with them. Oh well, next time. But I managed to take a photo of the restaurant building.

By the way, my restaurant visit is posted at:
