A friend and I attended the "Vegetarian" class this past Friday. It was just the two of us, someone else who had registered couldn't make it. We made Spring Rolls (pic of them here), Egg Corn Soup, and Yeung Chow Stir-Fried Rice. The lady Huanmei, is super sweet and obviously loves to show and teach/talk about Chinese cooking and culture. She said we could be "hands-on" or just watch and learn, it's up to you. We were hands on of coure! Really easy yummy recipes using readily available ingredients...if not, she'll let you know where to get it at what Chinese market.
As two people who had never made Spring Rolls before, were really surprised at how easy they were to make! I think the chinese 5 spice powder is what set them apart. It was fun!
In regards to being "vegetarian", she asks ahead of time if using shrimp/chicken is OK, which it was for us since we had shrimp in the stir-fried rice. I recommend, though, to bring your own tupperware containers for take-home afterwards if wary of styrofoam!!!
Thanx, Huanmei!

Great, foodlover, thanks for the informative review! I'm always a little wary when this site is used to advertise something. Good to know that there's a real product and good intentions behind the ad. Your spring rolls look great! :)
kmennie, the obligatory My Big Fat Greek Wedding quote: "Ian's vegetarian." *music stops* *long pause* "That's okay -- I'll make lamb!" *music starts up again* ;-)
When dealing with people who may not be so familiar with vegetarianism, it behooves a vegetarian to ask lots of questions. I bet there are plenty of "vegetarian" soups in restaurants that are made with chicken stock.

To Tiana: Thanks for the comment. Through our cooking lessons, we noticed some Vegetarian people also like to eat seafood and chicken. As foodlover said, we always ask ahead of time if any "student" in Vegetarian class does not like seafood or Chicken.
To foodlover: Thank you for the informative review. I really enjoyed the time with you and your friend. After read the review, I believe I should mention in the future ad that students are welcome to bring their own containers for take-home if wary of styrofoam ones we provide every time. Look forward to seeing you and your friends again. Thanks.
To Fresh Foodie: Thanks for your humorous yet subjective comments!

Those aren't vegetarian people.
Please, don't ask. If somebody says they're vegetarian, seafood and poultry should be completely off the menu. When I'm asked about that, I end up nervous as to what else non-vegetarian is being passed off as veg, and sort of lose my appetite worrying about hidden lard and the like...

I agree with kmennie. We all know about it, and posting it 10 times isn't going to make us know about it anymore than we already do. You can easily set up a website with GeoCities with all the dates and new recipes. Here's the link: geocities.yahoo.com/.

I've gotta say, I agree with kmennie and the others.
I'm self employed, so believe me, I understand how hard it is to get the word out there and let people know about your business! And I also understand that free advertising is hard to find. But I think this pushes things a little far.
Might I make a suggestion that might make both sides happy? Limit your postings to once per week. For example, every Monday you could update this post with what the next week's classes are going to be. That way the Ottawa community at large will get the information, but the members of ottawafoodies.com won't feel like we're being spammed with multiple postings per week.

I couldn't resist the menu this week (General Tso's Chicken) so I'm all signed up and going to learn my first Chinese dish! I think I'm going to bring my own chili pepper (from my garden last year) to spice it up a bit though. I'll try to bring my camera so you can check out my workmanship.
