We had the pleasure of going to Gezellig for our company Christmas party last night, and it was absolutely wonderful. The chef was able to cater to the various food allergies in our group, the meals were delicious, and we even tried to stump the waitress on an arcane detail ("what makes these belgua lentils?") and she knew everything cold. Thanks again!

Met someone where for lunch recently and finally had the beef tartare after 2 aborted tries (they ran out on 2 previous occassions when I tried to order it) and it was excellent. I am pretty careful where I eat raw fish and meat and I would not hesitate to do so here.

High marks were given by my dining companion for the squash soup.

I had the pork belly pappardelle and it was great. They recommended the pappardelle san pork belly for a vegetarian and it got rave reviews. I wish I had remembered to ask for the pork belly on the side for the other pasta so I can eat them :D

Radler is my favourite drink here... It is similar to BTP pink fuzz but more grown up :D

I've been remiss in not posting to compliment Gezellig for a dinner i and the other half enjoyed for a special occasion a little while ago.

We started with the Laab, which were delicious and a nice portion for sharing as an ap. For mains I had the shrimp and rabbit dish, other half had the steak. Both were exceptional. We shared something chocolately evil for dessert.

Wine pairings throughout were suggested by the staff and spot on. Service generally was flawless - pleasant, present but not intrusive. Seriously i can't say a bad thing about the people working there from the reception to the bar to the floor.

Totally worth every dollar. Will be back, will send others. I see the menu has changed for the season since we dined there... very looking fwd to trying the new dishes.

Had brunch here on the weekend and it was the best. They have a new-ish 2-for-$20 deal which has a lot of variety and a good mix of sweet and savoury.

We had the yogurt, the jerk pulled pork benny, the blueberry french toast, and the burger.

Yogurt - it was very good, maybe a bit too creamy? Unsure about how the texture was supposed to be though.

French toast - there was an aversion to white chocolate at my table so the kitchen made up a new batch of the cream cheese filling and the dish was super good.

Benny - it was so good. The polenta was perhaps a bit soggy on the inside but it was nicely crisp on the outside. Pork was delicious, egg was perfect, not too much sauce. Salad on the side was a bit of overkill.

Burger - oh man. Very good. Fresh bun, great tasting patty, great toppings, the mound of fresh fries was salty overkill again but very delicious. Was expecting a slider-size burger but it was bigger than that. Not full size though.

We were unsure about the portion sizes when ordering and the server mentioned a tapas-style small-plates idea, but we found the portions to be pretty big and filling. I definitely wouldn't have ordered the benny and the burger if I had known about the sides and the dish sizes. But I was very happy to eat every drop and crumb of food on the plate since it was totally delicious. It was my (delicious) mistake to order two heavy dishes.

I found the price to be very reasonable considering what you get. It might be a bit much if you only want one dish which may drive some people away, but they don't know what they're missing.

As always the servers were perfect and funny and knowledgeable.

My only suggestion would be to add the side dishes to the menu so that the diner has a better understanding of how much food is coming on the plate. Or perhaps have the servers mention the sides if asked about portion size?

We dined at Gezellig last night as well. We ordered cocktails...A Madman 2.0 which was wonderful, and a take on a mint julip that I found two sweet. The server offered to replace it which was wholly unnecessary because it was my error in judgement, but she pushed and I accepted, She brought me a well made sazerac. After our meal they comped the two drinks "so we would return sooner". We had mentioned our last visit was late winter.

Started with the laab which the host talked me into and I'm glad he did. Amazing combinations of flavours...spiced mushroom filling in wanton wrappers with a wonderful lettuce cream sauce. Fresh, nicely spiced and tasty. The other starter was the foie gras terrine. Divine, sweet, satisfying. We could not decide who "won" the appetizer round.

Dinner was The Shrimp and Grits and Paparadelle with pork belly, mint and fresh peas. Again the round went to a tie. Both entrees were exceptional.

Dessert was a berry galette and the coconut creme brule. WE have a winner! the creme brule was excellent with its light coconut flavour and coconut short bread topping. The galette was fine but not outstanding.

All in all a very satisfying, excellent meal. We will be back and soon! The menu is changing up in the near future with the change of seasons.

I went out with a friend to Gezellig last night, and was very impressed.

We were having a late dinner, and were already turned away from one restaurant (it was 9:02 and the kitchen closed at 9), and came upon Gezellig by happy accident.

The hostess and server were knowledgeable and friendly. We were seated promptly, ordered some wine. After making our order we were served bread (can't describe it, but it wasn't "typical" bread) with a garlic and oil dip.

For our appetizer we had the cheese stuffed arancini, which was nice and hot. There was a good balance with the cheese inside, and the black olive mayo and the pesto were delicious.

For my main, I had the duck confit. It was my first time having true duck confit, so I am biased with my awe of the delicious fatty flavors. The accompanying sides (beets! mushrooms!) were heavenly. I'd eat a plate of those mushrooms alone.

My friend had the arctic char which I was able to have a taste of. The fish was tender and flaked beautifully.

For dessert we shared the Mr. Nico gelato, and the butter finger. I loved the butter finger, and I only wish my sweet tooth was stronger to have been able to finish more of it! Dessert was paired with an ice cider and a 7 yr old port.

A truly satisfing meal!

Enjoyed a date night with my wife here and it hit all the standards of a Beckta restaurant. I had contacted the restaurant before hand to let them know of a gluten free requirement. There were many options on the menu, and they had arranged to make a molten flourless chocolate cake. It was fantastic. Other great touches included bringing papadum instead of bread.

They had a nice selection of cocktails - not sure if this is a new development - but my wife had a Southtown - gin, mint, ginger, vanilla, pepper, and it was very good. (she shared). I stuck with the wine pairings.

For apps we had grilled squid and steak tartare. Our mains were duck confit and shrimp and grits (note to self - shrimp and grits is more filling than it looks.) Desserts were the afore mentioned chocolate cake, and a peach/blueberry galette. (I have been once before and enjoyed the butterfinger - however had I had it this time it would have put me in a serious food coma).

Took my parents and nephew to Gezellig for lunch today for their anniversary.

My nephew came along since he is about to leave for his job in US so good for my parents to spend a little time with him.

Due to traffic and mom's physio this morning, my nephew arrived first and we were a few minutes late. He was already seated and the team was very friendly.

Mike who I spoke with the previous evening regarding dessert said they can do cheese plate or fruit plate for diabetics and the server I had last time remembered me and said welcome back.

Great service as usual and the only incident was that a glass was broken at a table being seated and splinters went to 2 occupied and 1 unoccupied table and were not all swepted up at the first attempt and the elderly lady at the other table with sandals requested / noted some remaining splinters, likely she was a little concerned.

My parents are both diabetic and my mom is on a low sodium diet so requested no added salt for my parents.

I had the Radler and the sugar free options were a tad limited and Mike agreed to do some sugar free iced tea with brewed tea so green tea with lemon and lime and splenda for my parents. All enjoyed the sourdough and the red pepper hummus.

The pork belly is no longer on the menu and had been replaced by a pork belly papadelle. Shame since I think my Dad would have enjoyed the pork belly.

Me: Salmon rilette and shrimp and grits
Nephew: pork belly parpadelle and house made burger. He was originally looking at the roasted tomato and basil soup but after explaining it is small plates, he switched that to the burger and fries after eyeing the beef tartare.

First both my dad and nephew enjoyed the papadelle pasta with pork belly. Salmon rilette was nice with smoked salmon and some kind of poppy seed crostinis but the picked carrots and diakon were so-so. While the strawberry salad was nice, I think my mom was not wowed since she left half of it on her plate.

Both my parents loved the shrimp and grits. My nephew is not that heavily into seafood but he tasted them and said the grits almost tasted like mashed potatoes and flavoured with butter. Mom said it was the perfect size for her since she has smaller appetite after the heart attack. The only average rating came from my nephew for the burger which he said the burger itself was not that flavourful, the jam topping made it a bit messy to eat and the fries while nice was way over salted. I tasted one and in addition to tasting the salt, I can see lots of salt particles clinging to the fry.

For dessert, we decided to split the butter finger dessert and the Pure gelato. Flavours of gelato was ferraro roche, mocha and vanilla so we took 2 scoops of ferraro roche and 1 of mocha, leaving the ordinary vanilla.

Butter finger dessert was very nice but fairly sweet. My mom only wanted a taste so only a small piece of butter finger and a scoop of gelato for each of 3 of us and it was perfect. I think I would not be able to finish a whole butter finger by myself. Hope Gezellig would offer a half butter finger portion in the future for when I am dining alone.

Great meal and good atmosphere.

Went there last Thursday for a late lunch. Arrived around 2:05 for 2pm reservation since had a little trouble finding parking space.

Started with the Radler by Stiegl draft from Austria with a grapefruit flavour and it was very tasty. Also delivered were some of Nat's sourdough bread and red pepper hummus and I cleaned the plate on both :D

After some consideration, decided to go for the classic pork belly and the shrimp and grits over the panko crusted fish cake or risotto. The 2 for $20 is a great deal for a nice lunch for those of us who like variety.

I had the pork belly before at WestFest as a ready made takeout which while decent and better than some of the other offerings on the street is no comparison to the just cooked ones and it was cooked to perfection. Asked about the source of the pork belly and apparently they buy Quebec Pork bellies from a wholeseller.

The shrimp and grits were beautiful. I think the dinner version has some clams but I did not miss them. The calamari were tender but I would easily have given them up for some more andouille sausage or another shrimp. They made the andouille sausage in house and they were very tasty... The grits and collard greens gives a good counterpoint to the shrimp and sausage.

No room left for the butterfinger dessert so would have to leave that for another trip.

We had a great dinner at Gezellig on Friday night.

Service was laid back but professional, attentive but not intrusive. Just how I like it.


We went with the following format: We ordered 3 apps (or small plates) and 1 main. We asked that they be brought out one at a time and we shared each plate. Why taste two plates when you can taste four?

First Plate:
Cheese stuffed arancini - black olive mayo, slow roasted tomato and garlic scape pesto 12.

I really enjoyed this dish - rice balls were soft and gooey on the inside, nice and crunchy on the outside. Paired with a glass of Rosé sparkling.

Second Plate:
Spicy glazed pork belly - apple cinnamon jam, cabbage & turnip slaw, sesame, local mushrooms 15.

Pork belly was sweet and crispy and melted in your mouth. Slaw was the perfect balance of crunchy and sour.

Paired with: Sauvignon Blanc, TinPot Hut, New Zealand 2011
Best wine I have had in a long time. Not available at LCBO :(

Third Plate:
Beef tartare - deviled egg, puffed mustard, crostini 14.

Second time ordering this dish - it is just sooo good. Prefer it with the poached egg it was paired with last time, but still a solid dish.
Paired with: Pinot Noir, Kenwood, Russian River Valley, CA, 2011

Fourth Plate:
Eggplant cannelloni - chèvre, fennel, tomato horseradish purée, garlic scape pesto, watermelon, lemon zest 23.

While this dish was tasty enough, it wasn't really for us. I loved the creativity, but there wasn't enough eggplant, the fennel didn't stand out at all and the pasta was a bit too thick. Watermelon was a bit weird.

Should have ordered the shrimp and grits!!!!

And finally........the pièce de résistance, of course, the "Butterfinger". There are no words.....just order it.

The other couple we were with enjoyed all their selections as well. All in all another great Beckta experience.

I had a lunch at Gezellig with my friends.
Our server was very Pleasant and Professional.
We enjoyed 2 for $20 deal.

I picked pork belly pappardelle
soft egg yolk, peas, grilling onions, baby kale, mint, green peppercorn : it was very delicious. I enjoyed mixing "almost uncooked soft egg yolk" and pasta together. It was very tasty.

cioppino stew
cod, mussels, squid, anchovy, tomato broth, fennel, fingerlings, Italian parsley : my friend from CA said it seems bit odd to see potatoes in cioppino, but over all it was nice stew.

I tried butterfinger : it was very tasty and has silky texture. I found it very sweet. I couldn't finish it so I took it home. I kinda wanted to eat with something that can neutralize my palate. Butter finger was served with soft meringue, but I think dry and crispy meringue with peanut dust would add more texture to the plate. over all, it was very nice dessert.

Ashley, I'm sorry to hear that you found the Butterfinger dessert to be too sweet. Please contact me on your next visit so I can personally help you eat it! :D :D :D

Yes, it is sweet. I don't usually seek out desserts, but when I do I like them to be sweet: baklava, honey soaked fried stuff, caramelized anything. I don't much like fruity desserts.

Sorry it didn't meet your expectations, but I really don't think it's sweeter than any other peanut butter and chocolate confection I've ever encountered. It is certainly less sweet than a Reese Peanut Butter cup or even an actual Butterfinger chocolate bar!

Try the other desserts next time. From what I've seen, they are all excellent here. :-)

Fresh Foodies, when you said "Life is too short not to taste this", I ordered this. Sorry. Too sweet for my teeth. Good that I ordered one to try with my friends. They just said "It is okay".

The butter finger dessert blew my mind. If you like peanut butter and chocolate, this might be the best dessert you ever eat. Life is too short not to taste this. The menu describes it as "peanut butter, white, milk & dark chocolate, graham cookie, chocolate anglaise" but those are just words. Totally addictive. The portion is way too big but you will eat and enjoy every last bite.

The apple-crumble cheesecake was very good and the honey-thyme whipped cream made it cool and unique. Beautiful presentation.

The brunch here is, in a word, excellent. The options are characterized as small plates, and are offered individually at prices between $8-$14, or 2 for $20.

Pictured is the Breakfast Biscuit Sandwich which consists of a fried egg, cheddar, sausage, house pickles, spiced ketchup and is served with delicious crispy home fries. This thing was delicious - it was almost like a breakfast slider as the sausage patty was meaty and well seasoned. The biscuit had a nice sweetness to it which paired well with the savory egg, meat and cheese.

My girlfriend also had the Duck Fry up which is a scrambled egg dish with duck, mushrooms, snap peas, cherry tomato, scallion, fingerlings, crème fraîche, and herbs.

I also had the Polish potato soup which was topped with dill pickle, red peppers, and carrots.

Both were also very good with the duck fry up being especially outstanding. My only regret is that I didn't save room for dessert. We will certainly be back.

Was lucky enough to have brunch here the other Saturday. I find it hard to find places offering brunch in the region on Saturdays (much easier on Sundays) so I was thrilled to discover that Gezillwig would be open on both Saturdays and Sundays.

The menu has a mixture of breakfast and lunch choices, we tried one of each and were not disappointed:
- A plate (actually it came in a shallow bowl) with scrambled eggs, two large pieces of chorizo, a fried polenta square, all topped with roasted tomato salsa, two pieces of grilled sourdough were on the side – at first I was not sure of the addition of such a spicy sausage on a breakfast plate but everything worked well together (I should have known!) and I enjoyed this dish very much
- Tagliatelle with a garlic cream sauce with shiitake mushrooms and charred tomatoes – a perfect combination of flavours

They serve Bridgehead coffee which, although I use the beans at home, tasted much better while sitting in this attractive restaurant.

Highly recommend.

shrimp and grits is one of my favourites here. succulent shrimp, creamy grits, tasty bits of calamari and kale and highlight the wonderful housemade andouille sausage. Yum.
