Ken V -

Err....all that water in the bottom of the pasta looks really unappetizing.

And FWIW, I have been to MIll St. (top floor) and to a Van Halen concert - I figure more hearing damage was done at Mill St. Seriously - it was uncomfortably loud for me too.

My sister in-law had the salmon and enjoyed it. Did not get to try this dish but again an average rating from her. We will not be returning any time soon since the food does not warrant even a ten minute wait and hearing impairment is a given depending on the amount of time exposed to this environment hope the staff wear hearing protection. The joke in the car on the way over to Stella Luna was it felt like we just got out of a Van Halen concert our ears still numb from the noise.

My wife had the wild boar ragu. She enjoyed hers the most. I could smell the cloves coming off the dish so I opted for only a small taste. The noodles were very over cooked and the boar was shadowed by the spice. Wow pasta is not that hard to get right. The noodles reminded me of my job at The Dill Pickle where they came in a five gallon pale submerged in water waiting to be heated up in boiling water. Did I mention that this place was packed with 30 somethings all clamoring at the bar waiting to be seated.

Passing on the comments about the Angus burger from my brother in-law were that this was a very average burger. He left three bites of burger uncharastic this guy never leaves food on his plate especially when he has to pay premium price for it. His root beer was the highlight of his meal.

I ordered the smoked chicken pot pie. The overall flavors were good. The sauce inside the pie was tasty and the chicken all five small shredded bits did have a nice smoky flavor but I was expecting more substance to the pie with maybe some good textured veggies and large chunks of chicken. Instead I got mostly pastry two small chunks of carrot. The peas were frozen bagged, the mashed potatoes of the Yukon gold variety again tasty but made up most of the portion. Really I was expecting more for a 70 minute wait. I have had frozen pies from the supermarket with more ingredients.

Was a busy Friday night at this pub but it really baffles me why. Upon entering at 5pm we were told it would be a 45 minute wait. No biggie went into the downstairs bar for a few beers. We did notice the whole time waiting that there were two tables with reservations on them after being told on the phone they did not accept reservations on Fridays. When we inquired about those tables we were told that this policy has been stopped and these were old reservations. Great reason for a no reservation policy. Well 70 minutes later we finally got a table upstairs. The first thing I noticed was the uncomfortable noise level bordering upon ear protection(not joking). We started with the chicken nachos that were really bad. A jarred boiled salsa on the side that would embarrass Pace. Cheese was a mix of cheddar and some other non distinguishable cheese that you really had to look for after the few initial top chips were eaten. The shredded chicken was way too sweet to be enjoyable so it was refreshing to have the guac(the one positive) for dipping this dry attempt at nachos.

I would be very curious to know at which time of day a number of people have gone. The Citizen review does mention that, which I like. Though I was happy twice for the food, the second time (described here) was on mid-afternoon, not overly busy, and had many misses for the various hits. Neither I nor co-workers who had it found the tourtière salty, but then again, it did not have gravy as described by Ms DesBrisay (nor did it look like the photo in that paragraph), so maybe the company in charge of the food changed things since. Which would be a really short timeframe to change things in.

Having gone very recently to the Toronto brewpub and having been quite satisfied, it would be sad if the Ottawa place had gone downhill that quickly. Victims of their own success? Will some equilibrium be achieved once 240 Sparks gets L3B? Time will tell.

At least I was right about the root beer. :)

@lovetoeat To be fair, that was also the case for some of Desbrisay's Citizen reviews, including this one (she takes 5 paragraphs before mentioning food or drink).

The difference for me is that in AD's reviews, the writing was still good enough to keep me reading through it until the food was discussed.. I also knew there'd be a worthwhile payoff, but can't assume that so much anymore.

I dismissed Laura Robin's review when it took her more than half of the review to get to the food.

OK, I just found this too funny. With the whole controversy over Anne DesBrisay getting let go, and the reviews recently posted below, I submit to you Anne's recent review of the Mill Street Brew Pub:
www.capitaldining.ca

And the citizen's review by Laura Robin:
www.ottawacitizen.com

Given the comments here from multiple foodies I the citizen made a grave error :) (summary - Anne gives the food thumbs down, beer thumbs up, Laura raves about the food.)

The other funny part is that desbrisay is still in the html name. It made me check twice on the author of the review.

I was here last Saturday afternoon for a legalnomads.com meet and greet. It was a fun gathering, with lots of Jodi's family, friends, and followers/fans/foodies.

First visit to Mill St. It's a beautiful location with lots of covered parking. A few weddings came in while we were there.

It was my first time having Tankhouse Ale in draught form and it's pretty good! I also enjoyed the super refreshing Lemon Tea Beer (pic). Around $7 for a pint.. pretty normal.

Valley Irish Red rocks my socks. It's a very smooth red with a hint of maple, dee-lish!

Lots of pub brewed beers to try. You can also buy growlers in their retail store.

The Tourtiere was awesome. Moist, tasty and rich. I don't recall ever having Tourtiere before so I can't comment on authenticity, but I would definitely recommend it.

A pile of us went for a lunch on Thursday and it went very well. I had the corn and chipotle soup with the jerk chicken and mango flatbread. It was not bad. A little better than I'd expect to get at a chain restaurant, so I wasn't disappointed. I really wanted to see what the spent grain flatbread was. It was very moist, even after baking, which I liked.
