Really, really awful cupcakes from here. This year I've had cupcakes twice from the Cake Shop. The vanilla and chocolate are both horrid, dry, crumbling and the frosting is that greasy, shortening type that coats the roof of your mouth and can not be easily cleaned away.
I have no idea how this place stays in business, the shop is always empty.
I had their Black Magic chocolate cake at a dinner frinite and it was chocolatey perfection. Three layers of tasty chocolate cake, not the oversugared kind that taste sweet with no coco. The icing between each layer and all over was generous and pudding'esque.... yes, that IS a word... and the whole thing was wrapped in thin layers of dark chocolate 'paper'. Everyone had seconds.
I don't know why this place feels the need to self-promo, if that's what's happening... the product i had stood nicely on its own and we'll cheerfully order from them again.
As an out of town visitor to Ottawa I happened upon The Cake Shop - what a lucky surprise. Delicious cookies and cakes. I now make a special effort to stop off there whenever I'm in town, and I put in requests when friends from Ottawa visit me. My absolute favourites are the truffles and the caramel filled cookies. Mmmm delicious. I love that they use real butter and proper home-made ingredients - you can taste the difference.
I love The Cake Shop. I'm a regular there. I love their cupcakes (especially the new mini-one's), chocolate chip shortbread and dessert cakes. With their new location, they also have a coffee shop, so I can sample things before buying them.
Their staff are really friendly and helpful. I take my kids there all the time and they are really nice at allowing us to enjoy our coffee and treats in peace.
They have a good selection of Christmas stuff available too - I noticed the other day that they have chocolate dipped marshmallows, chocolate bark and truffles, so I will definitely be going back to buy some as stocking stuffers.
Okay we had the cake after dinner and the 6 blueberries decorating the cake were wrinkled and not fresh and one had some white spot / mold on it.
The cake layers themselves were stale and dry. The chocolate mousse was meh. Both suffered from being frozen and defrosted. We only ate half the cake and no one asked for seconds. Either the cake was defrosted and decorated earlier than Friday am or the person decorating the cake should be fired for using old/spoiled fruit.
The sugar free chocolate mousse cake have really gone downhill since we started buying it 2-3 years ago. Noted some of the issues for mothers day purchase but thought it was due to the high volume of that day.. Not so, the freezing and defrosting have become standard business practice for this cake and maybe some other cakes too.
Basically tried to preorder a sugar free cake on Friday for a family do Sat while in the neighbour hood. Either a specific one chocolate truffle or reserve a regular purchased chocolate mousse cake.
Was told by what is likely a new staff that communicated with someone in the back (think daugther of the mother daughter owner team) that they will not have sugar free cake available on Saturday. Ended up buying a the available sugar free cake a day earlier than I really wanted to.
Called to check and try to speak to the owner on Sat and they did have chocalate SF mousse cake, in contrary to what I was told. They do them in bulk and defrost them one at a time before decorating them. Wish they were upfront and disclose that they freeze and defrost their cakes but I did suspect that from the mothers day cake but I thought only due to the high volume for that day but it seem to be regular practice.
It seem that their baker is a 70 year old chinese guy that only works 3 or 4 days a week so that might explain the less than fresh comment HFF and others have mentioned on some of the products they purchased before. I guess they will keep selling them until they are sold with customer not knowing they have defrosted or days old products.
The older woman on the phone (the mother of the mother daughter team) said they was no difference between the cake I purchased Friday (which may be defrosted Friday or earlier) and a freshly defrosted cake and decorated cake on Saturday. uhmm I am the customer paying for the cake, could I make the choice rather then forced into it by incorrect information? I am paying a premium price for what I thought was a freshly baked product.
I might have been okay with a freshly defrosted product but with a day old plus defrosted product... I might have made a different choice.
I now feel sorry that I directed a couple of people looking for ready made birthday cakes to the Cake Shop during the Taste of Wellington since I thought The Cake Shop did freshly made and harder to find stuff.
Anyone else know of a good bakery that would do sugar free cake if ordered in advance?
I am a customer of the cake shop since my dad is a diabetic and very few store do diabetic / sugarfree cakes these days. Last time I tried to try a new bakery and was referred back to the Cake shop since it was short notice.
We tend to buy them for parents birthdays, anniversary, mothers day, etc. Selection is a little limited so we tend to get the SF chocolate mousse cake.
One minor note was when we bought a SF cake on mothers day on a preorder 2 days in advance, we got a cake which may have been frozen and defrosted by the texture and it had a slightly tacky plastic mothers day decal. I understand there was high demand for the special day but for the price, it would have been nice to have have something hand written even in advance on a eatable decal that can be placed on the cake.
They also have sugar free pies but I have not bought them but they seem to sell well.
Have had tea/coffee with a snack there a few times. There was a chocolate bomb type cake (black Magic) slice that was tasty but far too sweet. The quick breads slices were okay but not memorable. The tart I had one time was nice.. The cupcakes I did not have since they looked normal and not something I cannot or don't have time to make and they had too much sugar and fat with the frosting.
Thumbs down? I'm serious in my offer to meet Sugar Sugar. I assume since she goes to the cake shop and volunteers at Sheppards she gets around town. I am near the shop daily.
I did go back and look over her profile and she gets around town no problem. Lots of shopping at the butcher (nice considering she has a chef at the residence) plus visits to fun haven, market, etc. I don't think it is unreasonable to meet somewhere central.
i know I sound crazy, but I love the Cake Shop. I am addicted. My family go crazy for the shortbread cookies dipped in dark and white chocolate as well as the strawberry flavoured chocolate and the cappuccino dipped cookies.
I also frequent this store regularly and always get a nice greeting. That being said they are only human and might just have had an off moment when you came in to the store.
When I go to my bank I sometimes don't get a personal greeting but don't rush home to write a negative review on my experience. I weigh up my total experience and leave it at that, an off moment!
Hope you give them another try.
We frequently get cakes from The Cake Shop. As both my children have allergies I love being able to let my kids pick whatever they want from there. The service is hit and miss, sometimes they're very friendly, other times not even a smile or thank you - and we're regulars. We do find there is too much icing on the bday cakes, but just scrape it off. We like their cakes, but have had better and for less. For us though the peace of mind on the allergy front outweighs everything else.
Saw the most amazing cakes there yesterday, Yes I bought another cake (Rolo cake)!!
They had a red cake with a gold dragon wrapped around it, with flames shooting out of its mouth.
Also saw a picture of a sneaker they made a few weeks ago. Very creative ladies!
I know the wedding cake designer has retired and they are moving in another direction with there cakes.
Nadine, the owner told me they are comming out with a new line of cakes in the Spring The are making some amazing 3 d cakes, I saw some on there website.
I have a beautiful picture of a wine bottle that they made for a friend of mine but not being very computer savvy I cant put in this comment.
I visited this place in December, hoping for a beautiful wedding cake. Walking into the shop, you can see a few beautiful tier-cakes. However...
The lady at the counter rudely said that they do not do wedding cakes. They are also closed on Sundays, so even if we got their cupcakes instead, we would have to store them somewhere for a day.
So we left...with a chocolate mud mousse, which was delicious.
Sorry I don't work for the Cake Shop!!
Maybe I should changer my name to Cake lover instead!!
How you come about this is news to me!! Since I am 76 years old and a pensioner I don't work , I just eat good food and in particularly like nice desserts.
We bought a Pumpkin spice ice cream pie for our Thanksgiving dessert and Wow! It was great..
We could have bought 2 as my family gobbled it up.
At $14.00 it was very reasonable. I hope they keep making ice cream pies. wonder what they will come up with for Christmas.?
the standard sugar free chocolate mousse cakes are baked in bulk and frozen. They are then defrosted one at a time for decoration and sale.
If you buy one ask when it was baked and when it was defrosted. It might not be defrosted that day since the Cake Shop defrost one and keep it until it sells then defrost another.
If you special order a cake, they require 4 to 7 day notice and since their baker only works 3-4 days a week expect the cake not to be freshly baked unless you are very very lucky.
Used to be semi regular customer for this for special occassions but after several defrosted and/or stale cakes and some not fresh / spoiled blueberries decorating the last one, going to give them a miss in the future.
