Went for dinner last night with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

We were served promptly, they staggered our one order appropriately, the food came out quickly, our cups were constantly refilled, and dishes were removed promptly.

We had:
+ miso soup (salty, but I LOVE salt)
+ edamame (pretty decent and a big portion)
+ seaweed salad (huge portion)
+ avocado/cucumber handroll (yum!)
+ avocado/cucumber maki (can't mess these up!)
+ rainbow rolls (not terribly flavourful, but decent)
+ salmon sashimi (really good!)
+ mackeral nigiri (alright)
+ spicy tuna (I didn't try it, but apparently not very spicy)
+ spicy salmon (same comment as tuna)

I think if I went again (and I will), I would go with a larger group so I would have a chance to try more things, like the stirfries or soup and some more maki rolls. I think I would also order more nigiri and sashimi, instead of the maki rolls (better value)

I went with only one other girl and we were BEYOND stuffed. It all sat pretty well though, so no complaints here!

My only complaint was that the menu doesn't explain what is in each roll (I can't have eggs), so I had to guess which ones might have mayo because the language barrier was a bit too hard to traverse with a couple of our servers.

We've been to this place twice now, and we were very happy with the food and service both times. I like the large selection of vegetarian sushi and think that the quality is better than the other AYCE places that we've tried in town.

The first time that we went (late on a Friday), the service from the sushi bar was very slow, but that was to be expected because the place was packed, and there were people getting take out as well. The last time (early on a Saturday), I expected the same, but the sushi arrived very promptly. Food from the kitchen always arrives quickly.

We've had a smattering of things off the menu and never been unhappy with the food. We were amused to note on our first visit that one tempura literally means one item rather than one order with multiple items in it.

The servers are helpful and pleasant even if they don't all have the best command of English - an issue for the woman with a gluten allergy who was sitting next to us the first time we were there. Our water and tea were always refilled promptly, and an error in ordering on our part was quickly fixed by our server.

Overall, good value for money.

Very poor and inexperienced wait staff. Food is below average. Go to Banc Sushi!

We usually go there for the all u can eat dinner, the option is quite larger..im a big fan of the dragon rolls and spider rolls. We've been goin there when it was fairly new, I will say the service has gotten a little better..they use to just throw ur food on the table..but now im assuming they got a lil more experience and are much more friendly....still the best sushi in ottawa..my friends have gone to sushi Kan and appearently it doesnt compare...

BF and I both had major cravings for sushi (in quantity) tonight and decided to check this place out. We arrived shortly after six and the place was pretty well full. We were seated right away and given three papers for ordering.

The first order was okay - we received the majority of food we'd asked for (sashimi - good, shrimp tempura - very good, spicy salmon roll and spicy tuna roll - also good). However, they totally omitted vegetable dishes and a spider roll we'd ordered.

At this point we were pretty relaxed about it because they were swamped, all the servers were harried looking teenage girls, and it's AYCE after all. The second order was also missing items! We found that, because of this, we should have been over-ordering because they missed so much and the wait time is so long that we were pretty hungry throughout!

The third order which was a spider roll (we wanted to try it after attempt #1), some sashimi and various ice cream/oranges was completely LOST. After waiting more than 30 minutes and asking two different servers about it, we were finally informed that they had no idea what had happened.

We decided to throw in the towel and go home after an hour and forty five minutes. To add insult to injury, I found one of the waitresses wandering around with my credit card and the bill approaching every table but ours with it.

BF and I were disappointed. Why can't AYCE sushi in Ottawa be fun and delicious and make you want to wear stretchy pants?

1000 Sushi Islands started out as a very phenomenal all-you-can-eat sushi buffet. However, over the past months after its grand opening, its service and food have started to become less than satisfying, to say the least.

First, let me just say that I went to this place a few days after it first opened. In fact, me and my party of 4 were the first one there at 11:30, so we were the only ones there. The service was great; the waitresses would attend to us every 5 or 10 minutes to check if we needed anything and to clear empty bowls off the table. The food was also fresh, came very quickly, and everything that was ordered appeared on our table. If you asked me, I would have said it was probably the best sushi restaurant ever.

Since then, I've visited 1000 Sushi Islands frequently with family and friends. But for a while now, it seems that the quality of their restaurant has gone way down. The staff takes at least 15 minutes to get to your table and take your order, the food tastes cold and on top of that it takes quite a while to arrive. On one occasion, we ordered 4 hand rolls as one of our first food items and it did not arrive at our table until we were done eating the rest of our food (after ordering thrice, and the waiting and eating was about 45 minutes) and about to pay the bill. On several occasions, some food items were completely either lost or forgotten about and never arrived at our table.

There was one visit when I went with my cousin, brother, and girlfriend, where we waited at least 40 minutes for our first order of food to arrive (two items from our list of 13 - a small plate of chicken teriyaki and a bowl of shrimp tempura), followed by another 20 minutes of waiting before a few more of our orders showed up. Mind you, as stated before, not all of it came. While we continued to wait, the manager himself came out to check on our table. Apparently, he thought we were just starting to loiter around since we stayed for a good hour and a half. When we told him we were still waiting for the rest of our food, he told us he would go check on it for us. Fifteen minutes later, he came back with the bill and just tossed it onto our table. We tried to ask him about the rest of our food but he just ignored us. That is not how to treat customers if you expect good business. You can't take my word for it, so I recommend you go dine out at this AYCE sushi restaurant for yourself. I can promise you a few things though; you will most likely either a) not get all the things you ordered, b) have to wait a ridiculous amount of time before any of your food arrives, c) have your food become cold when it arrives at your table, or d) have the manager personally come and indirectly force you to hurry up and leave.

All very delicious!

I strongly believe that sushi should be in large pieces, not chopped up into tiny itty bitty pieces - this shows me that the fish is not good quality, so you're trying to hide it.

and the fried bits in the rolls?

Gross.

Not bad. The food came promptly and the tempura was quite yummy. I really liked their 1000 sushi islands specialty roll. It was pretty busy when I went there on a Wednesday night, but overall the service was okay. I would not recommend the white snapper sashimi, ours came out warm! =(
However, the seaweed salad was great...but the flying fish salad had a little too much mayo for my taste...

The best in Ottawa but abit far from downtown where I live, but totally worth the trip!

The nigiri was good for an AYCE. Nothing to complain about. We also ordered a seaweed nigiri and it was good as well. The spicy tuna nigiri wasn't that great. It was just mayonnaise, sriracha and a bunch of tempura flakes. I hardly noticed any presence of fish.

What isn't in the photograph was the sushi pizza. It was satisfactory (I love my sushi pizza.)

We had also ordered ice cream for dessert. I loved my green tea ice cream, and my friends loved their mango and red bean.

Overall, good experience, bang for your buck on lunch time. For AYCE sushi places, I recommend bringing a party of friends so you can sample different dishes.

Very fresh, crisp, and hot.
There was more batter than shrimp, but it was still really nice.

For people who like to know what they're actually eating this might be helpful.

Make sure you know your surf clam from your squid, because they generally don't. I've ordered surf clam several times to get squid on my plate, and vice versa. I've been here several times over the years and this hasn't changed. Surf clam pieces have one red, pointed end and the other end is white. Squid is white and squishy with ridges.

The crab is, of course, not real crab but surimi. Every restaurant does this, and I like surimi but I wish they would label things as they are.

Watch out for that white tuna, because it's not tuna. Going by the taste it's probably escolar, which has a way of giving some people the runs. It sure is delicious though.

Quality and size of the cuts varies with the day. I've had good stuff here and absolutely awful stuff here. Then again that's pretty much the same for every AYCE place I've been in Ottawa.

I have tried to like 1000 Island Sushi, but it is a no go! Sorry, not even a little bit good.If you want AYCE go to Sushi Kan.

I keep coming back to 1000 Sushi Islands b/c I LOVE their Mango Shrimp Tempura and Dynamite Rolls, but in the last 2 months I've been sick twice immediately after eating there. Other people have expressed the same experience to me before, but I attributed it to them overeating rather than the freshness of the ingredients. Sadly, I find myself personally confirming this after my meal yesterday.

I've never been to Hockey Sushi so I'll give them a shot next time (understanding they are under the same ownership), again because I find 1000 Island's rolls to be some of the best I've had in Ottawa, but for me the Carling location is now a no-go.

Hot and crispy!

I have gone here several times and enjoyed it each time. Nice quality sushi. All you can eat specials with tempura, soup and other treats included. Try the little meat and onion rolls!
Reasonably good and fast service. Parking can be tricky though. One annoyance is they ONLY take credit cards or cash.
Be careful when you order as some items are single piece and others are 6 per order... which can have you wind up eating a LOT of the same items if you don't read carefully.

Salmon sushi pizza.
A bit greasy due to the mayonnaise, but still good.
