The lunch sashimi plate. It was very fresh and each piece was big. It was served with a miso soup, a salad and a bowl of rice. A good deal and a lot of quality for $18. Service was very friendly although the waitress didn't check much on us after the mains were served.
Succulent slabs of salmon and tuna grace the $16 sashimi order here. Perfectly fresh and delightfully garnished with scallions and matchsticks of yellow beet.
I find mackerel hard to stomach at the best of times. But the last time we were there (after Christmas) people in our group ordered it and didn't finish it.
The salmon sashimi is amazing here. The white tuna is good. But you must avoid the mackerel at all costs. Most disgusting thing i've ever put in my mouth. In contrast the salmon is so delicious and melts in your mouth.
Also avoid the salmon teriyaki at all cost. Disgusting.
For people who like to know what they're actually eating this might be helpful.
Make sure you know your surf clam from your squid, because they generally don't. I've ordered surf clam several times to get squid on my plate, and vice versa. I've been here several times over the years and this hasn't changed. Surf clam pieces have one red, pointed end and the other end is white. Squid is white and squishy with ridges.
The crab is, of course, not real crab but surimi. Every restaurant does this, and I like surimi but I wish they would label things as they are.
Watch out for that white tuna, because it's not tuna. Going by the taste it's probably escolar, which has a way of giving some people the runs. It sure is delicious though.
Quality and size of the cuts varies with the day. I've had good stuff here and absolutely awful stuff here. Then again that's pretty much the same for every AYCE place I've been in Ottawa.
A beautiful tuna sashimi with thin slices of ginger and Asian turnip and a light soy sauce that doesn't overtake the flavours of the fish. Simply delicious!
