pickled shroom roll @ 1000SI. if you dig the humble mushroom, i recommend it.

I TOTALLY AGREE that the service here can give off a rude impression. I think it's that the staff aren't welcoming or experienced. English isn't their first language and are predominantly foreign young girls. They speak chinese to each other and hardly said anything to us in english. My friend jokingly said both the food and the staff are FRESH OF THE BOAT! For such a low price, can you really complain about the service? Just enjoy all the sushi you can have for cheaps.

Never have I been to a restaurant where the service was so poor. The waitress we had went out of her way to make us feel akward.
We walked in and we greeted with a grunt and given one menu for the 2 of us.
We weren't asked if we wanted anything to drink which doesn't much matter because they don't have a liquor lisence anyways.
When we ordered our food she literally walked by and slid it across the table at us.
Never have I experienced such rude service in all my years of being and avid foodie.
Never will I go back and I suggest anyone who reads this follow suit.
Oh yeah, the food was acceptable, but that's irrelivant with the way we were treated.
DONT EAT HERE!!!!!!

spider roll @ 1000SI. i usually think soft shell crab tempura + julienned cucumber + avocado + flying fish eggs for this kinda roll. ok these guys do do it the traditional way eventhough there are many types of spider rolls out there.

man, gotta make use of that behringer mandolin that's sitting in the kitchen, makes julienning anything to mask anyone's lack of culinary talent and also makes you appear like a samurai chef.

1000SI roll @ 1000si. spicy salmon, avocado and nori wrapped roll then the whole thing dipped in tempura batter + fried. it's just OK. more a textural munch than a flavorful one.

algaculture is the new frontier that needs to help solve our energy crisis. literally unlimited supply, just need to convince all your corrupt and psychotic CEOs and executives that it's in their best (self)interests to tap this ass for cash.

pickled mixed seaweed @ 1000SI. nutritious, delish and refreshing. perfect diet for popeye and the incredible hulk.

spicy crab roll @ 1000SI. has a nice zing, crunch and neat mouthfeel to the taste buds.

authentic japenese sushi chefs will be offended if they see you dunk your sushi in soy sauce + wasabi + pickled ginger. sushi is supposed to bee enjoyed on its own for the true texture and taste of the ocean.

oh but it's rare to find AYCE sushi run by japanese. they're run mainly by chinese.

i still like wasabi & ginger & soy. but i dilute my soy sauce with water to reduce sodium. keeps my blood pressure in optimal range and no stress on the organs in the quest for eternal youth.

UNCLEAN, SPOIL FOOD AND OUTRAGEOUSLY RUDE SERVICE - 1000 ISLAND SUSHI BARRHAVEN.

2 of us went to 1000 island sushi behind the walmart in barrhaven centre. I used to love this place BUT NOT ANYMORE. After what I experienced I will never go back.

WHAT HAPPENED?
- Food ingredients were spoiled in one of the sushi rolls. We tried to eat the filling and wanted to throw up after. It was spoiled food that they served us. As we put aside that dish and asked them to take it away, the two waitresses came and started shouting at us and pointing at our dish, saying how we mangled it up and they will have to charge us. I said the food is spoiled, if you don't believe me, get one of your cooks to make the same roll with the same ingredients and you try it to eat it then.

The waitress then started to point and prode into our dish with her finger and say 'how about this one?! or that one?!' leaning so deep into our food that her nose was touching the sushi and her hair went into our food dishes. I was horrified at the way she was behaving! Completely uncalled for and very catty and rude.

It got to the point wherein my friend had to say 'Listen, we are trying to enjoy a nice dinner. Please leave us alone. We are trying to eat the rest of our food. This has ingredients in it which are obviously bad and spoiled. We cannot eat this. If you make us eat this, and we get sick, what will your restaurant do?' To that the girls just glared at our table and left us alone.

They started speaking in Chinese about our table every time they passed it and glared at our direction. (I know since I am Chinese myself but look darker so they thought I spoke a different language.) Even when they came around to fill our glasses with water, when we passed on it, another girl glared at us again.

The wait staff needs to learn that they cannot behave in such a disrespecful, childlike manner to their paying customers.

I and my friend were both fuming!! We were paying a decent amount $30 for dinner each and we expected to be left alone to enjoy our meal - Not be treated like we were kids forced to finish our sushi by someone girl our age. Needless to say, no tip was given. We were disrespected and treated very poorly. For the 2 of us who wanted a nice meal out, we did not achieve this. No fun at 1000 Island Sushi Barrhaven. I'm going to Toronto to get my sushi fix next time around.

SUMMARY - BOYCOTT BARRHAVEN 1000 ISLAND SUSHI. They will never learn that their customer service needs to be addressed if people continue to support them.

SUSHI KAN VS. 1000 Sushi Islands Inc.

I LOVE SUSHI!!!! So when the all-you-can eat sushi spots started opening in the Ottawa area, I defiantly wanted to try all of them!!! The two I have tried so far (Sushi Kan, 1440 Merivale Road 613 221-9545 and Sushi Islands, 1696 Carling Avenue 613-722-3803) were pretty similar but honestly….

The KAN was better choice but not by far. They were both in the $20.00 range and had the same ordering process (you choose what you want off the menu, write your orders down on the order sheet they provide for you, and VIOLA! They bring out your orders fairly quickly) The catch is, what you don’t eat they charge you extra for so, make sure not to over do it!

Both places had fresh fish (i tend to like to go for lunch instead of dinner - find the food fresher and the service better).

I had one "not so good" experience at 1000 Island during dinner, but i've been back for lunch and it's been exceptional! :)

Both Sushi Kan and 1000 Island Sushi had amazingly fast service, friendly waiters and extremely fresh food!!! I like both places!

Rainbow roll, spicy crispy crab roll, shrimp tempura roll.
All very delicious!

I strongly believe that sushi should be in large pieces, not chopped up into tiny itty bitty pieces - this shows me that the fish is not good quality, so you're trying to hide it.

and the fried bits in the rolls?

Gross.

Not bad. The food came promptly and the tempura was quite yummy. I really liked their 1000 sushi islands specialty roll. It was pretty busy when I went there on a Wednesday night, but overall the service was okay. I would not recommend the white snapper sashimi, ours came out warm! =(
However, the seaweed salad was great...but the flying fish salad had a little too much mayo for my taste...

The best in Ottawa but abit far from downtown where I live, but totally worth the trip!

The nigiri was good for an AYCE. Nothing to complain about. We also ordered a seaweed nigiri and it was good as well. The spicy tuna nigiri wasn't that great. It was just mayonnaise, sriracha and a bunch of tempura flakes. I hardly noticed any presence of fish.

What isn't in the photograph was the sushi pizza. It was satisfactory (I love my sushi pizza.)

We had also ordered ice cream for dessert. I loved my green tea ice cream, and my friends loved their mango and red bean.

Overall, good experience, bang for your buck on lunch time. For AYCE sushi places, I recommend bringing a party of friends so you can sample different dishes.

Very fresh, crisp, and hot.
There was more batter than shrimp, but it was still really nice.

For people who like to know what they're actually eating this might be helpful.

Make sure you know your surf clam from your squid, because they generally don't. I've ordered surf clam several times to get squid on my plate, and vice versa. I've been here several times over the years and this hasn't changed. Surf clam pieces have one red, pointed end and the other end is white. Squid is white and squishy with ridges.

The crab is, of course, not real crab but surimi. Every restaurant does this, and I like surimi but I wish they would label things as they are.

Watch out for that white tuna, because it's not tuna. Going by the taste it's probably escolar, which has a way of giving some people the runs. It sure is delicious though.

Quality and size of the cuts varies with the day. I've had good stuff here and absolutely awful stuff here. Then again that's pretty much the same for every AYCE place I've been in Ottawa.

I have tried to like 1000 Island Sushi, but it is a no go! Sorry, not even a little bit good.If you want AYCE go to Sushi Kan.

I keep coming back to 1000 Sushi Islands b/c I LOVE their Mango Shrimp Tempura and Dynamite Rolls, but in the last 2 months I've been sick twice immediately after eating there. Other people have expressed the same experience to me before, but I attributed it to them overeating rather than the freshness of the ingredients. Sadly, I find myself personally confirming this after my meal yesterday.

I've never been to Hockey Sushi so I'll give them a shot next time (understanding they are under the same ownership), again because I find 1000 Island's rolls to be some of the best I've had in Ottawa, but for me the Carling location is now a no-go.

Fried dumplings.
Hot and crispy!

I have gone here several times and enjoyed it each time. Nice quality sushi. All you can eat specials with tempura, soup and other treats included. Try the little meat and onion rolls!
Reasonably good and fast service. Parking can be tricky though. One annoyance is they ONLY take credit cards or cash.
Be careful when you order as some items are single piece and others are 6 per order... which can have you wind up eating a LOT of the same items if you don't read carefully.

Salmon sushi pizza.
A bit greasy due to the mayonnaise, but still good.
