It is vegan. There are lots of vegan cheesecakes, vegan cheese, vegan whipped topping, etc. I don't know how Caroline makes her cheesecake at Zen, but there are many ways to do it.

Yes, that is exactly what I did and why I was confused... cheesecake isn't vegan. I guess they don't bother to say "vegan" before any food that is traditionally not vegan.

What's the deal with this restaurant, is it by default vegetarian or vegan?

I think 3rd course was eggplant lasagne. Probably the least favourite of the dishes. The eggplant slices with the tough peels that I had to discretely get out of my mouth into the napkins and back to the plate really detracted from enjoyment.

Dessert was a penna cotta but forgot to take a picture. It was nice but not spectaular.

Overall too much of a meat and seafood lover to eat like this every day but good once in a while and my sister was very happy over her Bday dinner.

Vegan version of Salad nicoise with cashew cream in the potatoes for the eggs and fried capers instead of anchovies. Very tasty.

Took my sister to ZenKitchen for her belated Bday dinner about 2 weeks ago. My sister is the vegetarian and she loved the restaurant and want to go back. My brother in law heard it was vegetarian and begged off.

We did the 4 course tasting menu. With 2 weeks lag don't remember everything. Would have been nice to be given a printed sheet with the tasting menu info at the end of the meal.

Everything was very good to great with one minor disclaimer. The eggplant lasagne ? should have been peeled since the large egglant slices had tough skin.

First was the fried okra amuse bouche

Very nice brunch here today. Vegan friend was visiting, hence the perfect place to go. The chickpea wrap was extremely filling--chickpeas, vegetables, and a great coriander chutney. Mac and "cheese" was creamy and...tasty, though the cheesy flavour was a bit odd--more like soy sauce than cheese. The dragon bowl got good reviews from our vegan pal--brown rice, quinoa, veggies, and grilled tofu. Service was prompt and competent. Atmosphere was nice. The music selection was really great, but it was playing from something off in the distance and hence had a sort of tinny sound. Invest in some speakers, man!

I don't think I will race back given my love for eating dead animals and their byproducts, BUT for a fine dining vegan option, it was great.

Amuse,I cannot remember what it was, but it was good. Lot of flavour, texture and taste in one spoon!

An extensive brunch menu (maybe 10+ options?) and by rights they are probably all delicious!

I opted for the Reuben sandwich, which involved moist dark rye with a lightly toasted exterior, meaty tempeh, and a wonderfully sauced cabbagy filling. Tasty and satisfying!

The soup of the day was corn chowder so I chose this as my side and was very glad I did! Without a doubt this was the best corn chowder I've ever encountered.

This dish was a reasonable $14. The coffee was a somewhat less reasonable $3, but it was good coffee and it was served with a cute creamer and sugar bin so I hold no grudge. ;-)

It was pretty empty on a Saturday. They are busier on Sunday, when they have live jazz.

Service was wonderful, friendly, and it involved generous refilling of water glasses.

greetings
The vegan burger at ZenKitchen is delicious. Texture similar to meat, fixings beautiful, on a nice whole wheat bun. Vegan poutine was fab as well. Have eaten here several times for lunch and dinner, always have had a good experience.
