One of Ottawa's remaining original taverns. Some may describe this place on the corner of Parkdale and Armstrong as "gritty", but really it's just a place for regular working-class joes and janes, which is what makes it so attractive. The staff are friendly and unpretentious as the patrons tend to be as well. Food is simple but yummy. Some of their "home-cooked" dishes like meatloaf and the likes are very good. Beer comes in quart bottles by default. Live music is usually pretty good on the weekends. It's a really great atmosphere if you like taverns.

One of my faves, the food is cheap (the beer too), usually deep fried, disgusting, and delicious!
I have heard a rumour that it has been sold. This would be a very bad thing.
(Some guy on Urban Spoon aid he wanted to buy it and build condos there.. . . because he didn't like the food-BBBOOOOO)
The place holds poetry readings, plays, jazz jams etc etc, and is an important part of the Westboro/Hintonburg community. The owners have always been big supporters of live music, local interests, and the area in general.
I will miss it if the rumour is true.
And I live on the other side of town.. . . . .

Yup I have been there 3 or 4 times in as many months. Same food as ever - good enough. Great smoked meat sandwiches. Good wings. Pizza is pretty good. I have not had one of their "home cooked meals" style meals recently - used to have them there a lot like pot roast or roast beef and potatoes or whatever.

Anyone eaten here lately?

I actually had a smoked meat sandwich and fries from here and it was really quite good.

The sandwich probably doesn't meet up to a smoked meat conaisseur's level but the fries were very good and homemade. The prices were also very good. I'd be inclined to try other things off the menu.

For any knitters or crafters out there, there is a group of woman from about 20 on up who meet here (and at the Elmdale) on a semi-regular basis for what they call a "Stitch and Bitch". There has been the odd male knitter attend as well.

Here is the facebook group : www.facebook.com

My wife is one of the regulars.

This place is for drinking, and I mean, really drinking. The food is just to blot up all the alcohol!

Times have changed and so has the beer - they now serve Beau's Lug Tread on tap! A large pitcher is about $18.

I like this because you can get half-pitchers as for half-the-price of a regular pitcher.

Sometimes the half-pitchers are more costly - but not here!

Love this place :)

Don't expect anything special here - just your standard big-brand offerings from Molson and Labatt. By default they serve quart bottles, which is kind of neat.

I've been meaning to comment on their pizza for a while now (I've been an infrequent regular for years now, if that makes any sense?)... this pizza is waaay different than anything else in Ottawa. First, the crust: not super doughy, not super thin. Second, the sauce: kind of savoury, like most lebanese pizza joints in Ottawa. Third, the cheese: it's cheap, standard mozza, but the special twist is that they put this herbed oil or butter on top of the cheese which gives it a really unique flavour. Fourth, toppings: standard toppings, nothing fancy or high quality here, this is The C. Overall, a great pizza to soak up the suds! Oh, and it's pretty affordable too, like most things off the menu here.
