Eating Raoul?

@blubarry,

Water for Chocolate? Attack of the Killer Tomatoes? (well not exactly foodie . . .)

- here is a good review of Eat Drink . . .

This is a wonderful food movie: spectacular meals and food scenes are always just moments away in this film. While the opening credits appear the viewer is treated to watching Chu beginning to prepare a Sunday dinner. He keeps live fish in a clay jar so that they are fresh; he also raises his own chickens. Something as simple as cutting vegetables is turned into art. Watching him pull out Peking duck is almost unbearable to watch if there is no food around. This film will also leave you craving dumplings, something that he fixes at almost all of his Sunday dinners. In another scene Jia-Chen and her friend are drinking tea. First she pours boiling water into a pitcher containing tea leaves, after a minute she then pours the tea into her cup but leaves the small tea pot resting in her cup for a minute to drain. It is this attention to detail that makes this movie a wonderful food film. The plot is much better than A WALK IN THE CLOUDS; however, it can not quite rival BIG NIGHT for substance, but it is still well written. The only other film that rivals the preparation, presentation, and consumption of food is BABETTE'S FEAST.

@live4food,

Foodie movie night is a great idea. I live way up in Cantley, QC though. I have Eat Drink and Ratatouille on DVD.

When Bill Gates was a young man building Microsoft he spent a lot of time at work. Jerry Pournelle (a computer magazine and science fiction writer) used to say the could get Bill Gates on the phone any time he wanted. He would just called the main number at Microsoft after 9:00pm and Gates would pick up . . .

Anyway, at one point Bill was dating a girl who was working in another city. So they would go on virtual movie dates. They would both go to see the same movie at the same time (in different cities), then call each other afterwards and talk about the film.

I wonder if we could do something like that in the internet age . . . go through the foodie movie list one by one (we could share the avi's via dropbox) and discuss the films afterwards. Do one film over a two week period to allow for asynchronous watching . . .

Dropbox gives you a 3GB space for free. If you invite others, the inviter and invitee both get additional free storage (up to 8GB). My dropbox invite links are:

db.tt/2ZjRd2i or db.tt/UbmNt3U

You can share folders between dropboxes. And you can install dropboxes on several computers, and mobile devices. Any changes to files are synchronized to all devices. Some people, for example, store their browser bookmarks in their dropbox, then they have the same bookmarks no matter which device they open a browser on. There are lots of uses too. One very big deal, is it also serves as an offsite backup (I think the dropbox servers are in the USA midwest). Or a way of accessing your desktop file while on the road, your home files at work, your work files at home, etc. Or sharing photos. It all works pretty seamlessly too. I've had mine for 3 years without a hitch.

Dropbox also supports a public folder, where you can drop a file, then give out a link to it over the web, by email, or IM. Others can download that file from dropbox servers by clicking on the link. They don't need to install dropbox to do this.

Perhaps we can use it to share avi files for a foodie movie bi-weekly? If you need an avi player, I recommend VLC. It plays pretty much every video file format.

Francis, I like the idea of a virtual movie night. I listen to a satellite radio station that does this once a month, then sets a date for discussion. I have used drop box for photos successfully, but also have used Zip.ca to find obscure movies. Haven't yet done the netflix thing.

Well I can start it off with Eat Drink and Ratatouille. I own both movies, will put the link up in my dropbox for a limited time, and share the link in a specific place for people interested in doing this virtual movie week. I think that should fall under "fair use".

----------------------------------------------------

Ok the first movie is Eat Drink Man Woman.

Go to the wiki and search movie and get the dropbox link for it.

It's a dvd quality avi, 1.6 GB in size.

I will start a forum topic to discuss the movie, of the same name. Watch the movie first, as the forum will have spoilers.

@pb&a,

I wouldn't mind watching Solyent Green again. After seeing Rise of the Planet of the Apes, my son and I watched the original set . . . and the first two movies are pretty good ! I liked the scenes of the mutants worshipping the holy bomb and the sacred fallout, as well as classic lines such as "We're a peaceful people, we don't fight our enemies, we make our enemies fight each other." As a kid, I didn't really get it the first time around. :-)

Tomorrow night the theme on Saturday Night At the Movies on TVO is "Dinner at the Movies". They will be broadcasting Big Night and Mostly Martha. I have only seen the first one and can highly recommend it.

2013 Feb 7
It looks like TVO will be showing Big Night and Mostly Martha back to back again this year. Both movies will be on this Saturday night starting at 8:00 pm.

Just watched Today's Special and recommend it as a fine accompaniment to takeout from Coconut Lagoon :) A sweet little diversion with some great looking food!

Bumping up an old thread because I just saw "The Trip to Spain" last weekend. It's the latest adventure with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon who also appeared in the 2014 film "The Trip to Italy". The two men retrace a trip to Spain that the Steve went on during his younger years. The film mostly takes place at meal times while the two men hone their celebrity impersonations while dining on fabulous food. The food porn alone is worth the cost of admission.

The tv series Hannibal had some glorious food porn.

...what? STOP JUDGING ME!!!!!!

2017 Aug 22
Pasta Lover, Have you seem the original The Trip, about an excursion into northern England for the same purpose. Having seen all 3 I enjoyed the food porn aspect of Spain the most. Spaniards seem to have more fun eating than either the Italians, or Brits. I'm sure others have seen the trilogy. . . . . .

2017 Aug 23
Hungry Pete I haven't seen the original Trip - I didn't even realize there was one that took place in England. I knew about their Trip to Italy since it got good reviews. I will have to keep my eyes peeled on the Bytowne calendar or if I can get it on dvd/blu ray.

On another note, as part of the Canada at 150 celebrations the Ottawa Public Library is hosting a series of events celebrating 150 years of story telling in Canada. As part of the series they will be screening three films at the Bytowne Cinema on September 19 called "à la carte : Food Film Festival". The triple bill is free of charge and the films promote food literacy.

Info on the series is posted on the OPL website: biblioottawalibrary.ca (You have to scroll down about 2/3 of the way down to find information about the series.)

Showtimes and movie descriptions are posted on the Bytowne Cinema website: www.bytowne.ca

The original was originally a TV series, 6 episodes edited into a movie for North America, and is available on some streaming platforms, Netflix, I think, but don't hold me to it.

Chef, with Jon Farvreau and Scarlett Johansson. This is obviously a fantasy pairing. Kind of like Kobe beef and an Ontario Riesling.
