Where to buy Haloumi Cheese? [General]
2009 Apr 20

One of my fave 'Mid East' grocery stores, the Al-Kalaa Mini Mart, have lots of it. The package says Halloom.
They also have other kinds of cheese like Saladi, three kinds of Feta (Canadian, Bulgarian and Greek) and others as well.
The picture is from their showcase.

Al-Kalaa is on Krikwood between Carling Ave. and Richmond Rd.

As others have already stated - just about any mid-east grocer carries it.
Loblaws also has their own brand now I think? Maybe it was a one-off type thing, but I'm sure I saw it over the winter. It's great for grilling, served with grilled tomatoes & eggplant & a mint/oregano vinaigrette.

thanks for the input. I never even thought to look at a Loblaws. Since I live in Kanata I will check Loblaws/superstore and if no luck I will trudge eastwards to that place on Kirkwood..
thanks! And yes... grilling is my intended purpose - on my hot stone grill that we got two years ago as a wedding gift that is still in the box :)

I'm not a haloumi expert kbb but I have cooked it half a dozen or more times on the BBQ or stovetop and I wanted to tell you not to cook it on too high a heat - BBQ especially, as it will burn and stick to the grill. Low and slow is what works for me (btw on a stick on the grill). Marination is also good eg evoo+garlic+oregano or thyme, with maybe a sprinkle of ground sumac if you like it. Yum! You should be OK on a hot stone - any I've seen aren't too hot as far as I know. Good luck, and enjoy!
Oh, and maybe you could soak it in water for a while if you want to remove some of the salt as it is quite salty. Or not...
