Chipotle source? [Food/Vendor]

2008 Nov 25
Hi. I live in the west end and used to buy chipotle and other chiles at the Latino grocery store at Merivale just south of Carling. That store is now defunct and repaced by an Indian grocetry store.

Can anyone suggest where I can buy chipotle (dried as well as in adobo sauce?)

thanks

I'm pretty sure you can get it in adobo sauce at most major grocery stores. I've seen it at Lablaws and food basics. - Dried I try the chilie chilis store downtown.

fishyfishy you can definitely buy dried chipotles from Chilly Chiles but they do not have a store downtown anymore. (Just thought I'd save you a trip...) They are located in Navan and if you can't make it there they do mail order. They probably have chipotles in adobo sauce as well. If all else fails you can try Mercado Latino on Montreal Road. I'm not sure if there is anywhere in the west end since I haven't shopped there in ages other than Merivale. Hopefully some west enders can help out?

Thank you Pasta Lover - we (Chilly Chiles) do indeed have dried chipotles and chipotle in adobo sauce (in 7 oz. and 11 oz. cans). We carry chipotle powder, chipotle flakes and both the chipotle morita pods, and chipotle brown pods. We always have the smaller quantities packaged and available in the store, but we do offer bulk sizes as well. For the bulk sizes we simply need the customer to call us a day ahead to order, to allow us time to get it packaged for them. And we are always happy to mail order to anyone who can't make it out to our store. The chiles are all listed on our web site, or you can always just give us a call at the store!

The Superstore on Richmond Rd has canned chipotles in adobo sauce. They're in the same aisle with taco fixings. The brand they carry is Herdez.

La Cabana has a small latin foods grocer attached to it called La Tiendita which sells dried & canned chipotles.

You can also find dried chipotles at Rainbow Foods on Richmond Rd. from time to time.

tsk tsk chimi. La Tiendita is the (defunct) store fishyfishy was referring to the in original post!

As an aside, I can't help but laugh whenever I heard 'adobo' because it makes me thing of Abobo and Double Dragon (really showing my age and maturity here)

Did they close in the past 2-3 weeks? If they did, that sucks! To gain access to La Tiendita (as I know it) you have to use the same entrance as La Cabana (the restaurant entrance). It's not a big store by any means, so I could see how someone could miss it (especially since it shares the entrance with the restaurant).

Monty - nice tangent! Abobo rocks. Punch him 'til he flies out of the helicopter! There used to be an awesome website where you could print out an Abobo mask.

tsk tsk Monty - La Tiendita is not defunct! I shopped there tonight, picked up some ancho and chipotle chiles.

Not quite what you're looking for, but I found Knorr Tomato and Chipotle boullion at the Chinese grocery on St Joseph in Orleans, not sure the exact name of the place.

I picked some up and used some in a southern style cheese soup I made lastnight, quite good, very smokey.

Giant Tiger once again comes through... the Walkley Rd store had Chipotles, canned, Herdez brand.

Grace Ottawa (Grace Ottawa ) has them in adobo, not sure about the dried ones but I would say probably...

The original post from fishyfishy says the Latino (El Salvadorian) store on Merivale near Carling is closed.

No it's not .... Thank Goodness.

As ChimiChimi points out: "La Cabana has a small latin foods grocer attached to it called La Tiendita which sells dried & canned chipotles. "

.... and yes, it's till open. I was there yesterday.

You must enter the store through the La Cabana restaurant.

There is also an ethnic (halal) food store in the same strip mall. So I can understand the confusion.

The small can of Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce from San Marcos goes for $2.25.
Chilly Chiles charges 33% more ($2.95) and you need to pay for shipping or the cost to go to Navan.

I could never understand the prices at Chilly Chiles. Maybe they don't buy in the same volume as the local Latino stores like La Tiendita, Mercado Latino or the one in Chinatown.

Another example : The 4 Oz. bottle of El Yucateco Habenero (Red) Hot Sauce. It's $3.45 at La Tiendita and $6.95 at Chilly Chiles. That's twice as much !!

Maybe the pricing came from the days when they had to pay rent on Sussex Drive.

Captain Caper I used to shop at Chilly Chiles when their store was located on Sussex. Admittedly I have not ordered from them yet since their move to Navan however I did like purchasing hard to find ingredients from them. For example Chilly Chiles used to be the only store I knew of that carried the La Chinata smoked paprika I like although many stores in Ottawa now carry it. They also carry every type of dried pepper imaginable (as well as powders) and it was within easy walking distance for me so I could do my one stop shopping there. When my spices run low (which will be soon!) I can place a big order to justify the shipping costs. If I head out to Merivale it's a one hour bus ride and if I were to drive there I'm sure it would cost alot more than $6 in gas to get there and back. Having said that there are certain products I would skip over like Mrs. McGarrigles or Perth Pestle products since most stores seem to carry them these days. Just my 2 cents-:)

I have been buying dried chillies such as Ancho and Chipotle from a small store on Montreal Road. Mercado Latino at 67 Montreal rd.
