*Adored* the "old" Nupur, but this was a let-down. Service was a bit of a mess and not a single dish from the (disorganised) buffet was memorable. Lots of bland, lots of watery.
What made it not just "meh" but awful was asking if a particular dish was vegetarian, and being confidently assured that it was, and plonking it on my plate and another vegetarian's plate only to bring it back to the table and find wee shrimps in it.
Our appetites went to hell and we didn't get much of a lunch in, nor did we hear much of an apology.
Vegetarians, vegans, and allergic sorts will want to steer clear.
One of the few Indian places in Ottawa that makes dhansak - delicious of not a tiny bit too hot. Naan is great, as is the saag aloo and onion bhaji. These are our faves on the menu, although their other dishes are very good too.
I'll start with the less important, service and atmosphere. We had a girl serve as and she was extremely nice and pleasant. Though we did notice that as a group they seemed confused quiet often. (servers and what seemed to be the manager or owner) The atmosphere was good enough. Tables are not too close or anything like that.
In terms of the food the words that come to mind is inconsistent and average. For example, the tandoori was probably the best part. But that same tandoori, one piece of chicken is tender and just great, the other kinda hard and a bit crunchy. The butter chicken was not bad but again it was not warm, it was served basically cold. The cream that makes up the butter chicken was not liquid it had come together on top (like what happens to milk when you heat it) WAs it re-heated? don't know I never had the aloo dish I think it was called..the cauliflower with potatoes..but that tasted just like cauliflower to me..even though it seemed to be in some sauce. Not sure if it should taste that way. In any case, not a fan of cauliflower. The biriyani was alrite.
So all in all, it wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either.
When New Nupur first opened quite a few years ago they made a mean Mustard Shrimp, Bengali style, smothered in fresh ginger juice and whole mustard seeds. Has anyone tried this recently?
I eat here from time to time. Location is very convenient and the lunch buffet is affordable. It's not the best, nor the worst Indian in Ottawa. Generally nice flavours and decently fresh ingredients. The sauces aren't overly complex but they are satisfying and filling. Reasonable for the price. Atmosphere is acceptable too. 6/10.
I went to New Nupur last week. As with any types of cuisine (particularly ethnic), there is the down-right terrible, the fair, the good and the simply divine! The food at NN was some of the best Indian I have had in a long time! I was told the chef is new but I forget which region he recently immigrated from.
We started with complementary papadum - yum! Between the two of us, we ordered the butter chicken (quite possibly the best I have ever had - my only 'criticism' is that there were very few pieces of chicken, lots of sauce), lamb biryani (this was my least liked dish -- I don't think biryani should be sticky), shrimp pasanda (tasty) and naan (fluffy and so delicious). The meal was very filling. There was a lot of naan to sop up the wonderful sauces.
I had a mango lassi (a staple in my Indian dining) which was very yummy.
The place was pretty empty. The service was good in that the server was very nice but it did not appear she knew what she was doing. We were asked on four or five occasions what our order was (we only ordered four items and only two other tables had people!) but it didn't matter much since the food was good. For the most part, they were proactive in ensuring our water glasses were filled.
Cost-wise, NN is a bit pricey for Indian food but maybe I've been off the good-Indian-food junket for so long that I don't really know the going rate.
All in all, yummy dining experience. Would go back.
Just came back from dinner here and sadly to say I was not impressed. The service was friendly, nice decoration inside. The naan and rice were freshly made, it was just our meals we were disappointed with. The butter chicken and vegetable curry were very bland and the lamb kebab was a far cry from the, "tender" morsels of cubed meat described on the menu. I ended up putting mango chutney on everything to jazz it up a bit. No Nupur for me.
The New Nupur has the best indian food in town. Totally kicks Haveli's little behind, yet no one knows about the Nupur. It's strange, when it was farther South on Bank street, it was always full, but now that they've revamped and serve, truly, the tastiest dishes around, it's like everyone has forgotten about them.
If you love Indian food, and you are willing to pay a little more than the standard $9.99 buffet, Please make it your civic duty to go to this restaurant. you will NOT be sorry.
My girlfriend and I stopped in for the Lunch Buffet this last Saturday. It was empty inside and around 1pm, so we were a little worried.
Well, we had nothing to worry about. The food was excellent, the owner brought us fresh Naan to our table and other items to the buffet tables.
My favourites included the Tandoori chicken, butter chicken, and the pakoras. They also had an excellent homemade hot sauce that was flavourful, but burned the mouth and throat - so good!
We would definetely go back. My favourite Indian in Ottawa so far.
