About a couple of months ago this place caught fire and shut down for a few weeks. It reopened under a new name - Aroma India.

The food is no different from what was served under previous management. Awful, tasteless and worst of all unhygienic. I made the mistake of giving them another chance under the new management and found cockroaches crawling on the food at the buffet bar. When I pointed it out, the staff simply removed the offending roach and said that his boss was not around... so he couldnt really deal with the problem any differently. I will be calling the Health Inspector.

Normally I don't comment on food inspections of a specific establishment... people should be checking out the inspection history of this place before making the decision to eat there.

I have been to Moni Mahal at least 6 times and I feel that it is the best value Indian food in the city. To begin, the buffet is gargantuan! I would guess that there are about 100 trays of food. There are too many dishes for one person to sample in one sitting. There is a nice selection of salads, chutneys and pickles, a ton of curries, stews and dhals, and finally, they have ice cream, fruits and Indian sweets for desert.

My strategy when eating at Moni Mahal is to pick a section of the buffet and stick to it. This way I can fully enjoy the dishes in that section. Otherwise, I find that when too much Indian food (which is pretty much all stew) is mixed on your plate, all the dishes end up taking on the same taste.

The curries can be hit and miss, but I have enjoyed the grand majority of dishes. The butter chicken, kabuli masala, all the different kinds of pakora, egg plant curry etc etc. are very tasty. The naan at Moni Mahal is always fresh and included in the buffet – so there is none of this crafty ‘full buffet but naan is extra’ crap that I have seen pulled at Indian restaurants before.

The price is very decent at 12 something for lunch and 15 or so for dinner. Also I think this restaurant can please large groups. The trouble with large groups is that you always have a picky eater who has to complain about the choice of food. At Moni Mahal, there is enough salad, mild Indian dishes (like fried pakora’s), naan, papadums, tandoori chicken, and ice cream to appease difficult people. I similarly think that Moni Mahal is a good choice for people who are scared of Indian food. This is because they can see all the choices in front of them, and they will not have the daunting task of ordering weird sounding food off of an a la carte menu.

Highly recommended! I will be back many times!

I haven't been there in awhile, so I'm not going to say anything about the food itself right now, but what I will say is that they have the largest selection of ANY Indian buffet in Ottawa, at least from what I have seen so far (and I've been to many). It's ridiculous how many things there are to choose from. Seriously. A full cart dedicated to salad, a full cart dedicated to dessert, and so many other carts for everything else -- it's crazy!

There is something soooo delicious about their butter chicken. They make you keep going back for it.
