Via the Grapevine... My Girlfriend and her Hubby were here recently, the Owners (that sweet Lady and her Husband) have sold up the business... they are due to retire mid-Month (April 15, 2009).
Biz has been sold... expect changes in the upcoming months.
We went here before Christmas with a group of friends. It was my first visit, others in the group had gone on other occasions.
It was a blustery winter evening, and street parking was not available (due to impending snow removal) one of the owners came out of the restaurant and directed us where to park… pretty much in their private driveway… a much appreciated gesture.
Once inside we quickly noticed that this restaurant in a converted house on Somerset had retained a lot of its charm and homey feel. The dining room was small but welcoming. The same owner that had helped with our parking woes (a nice lady) helped us off with our coats and got us comfortably seated and immediately took our drink order. “The Man” ordered a Rye & Ginger, while I had a Caesar. Then we settled in to peruse the menu.
Our drinks came quickly, as did the bread basket. The family atmosphere was quite evident, as one of the owners children came by the table to bring a missing item (think it was cutlery). Although it was a child… it was all done quite professionally. Our friends who had been several times before recommended that we go with the Table d’Hote Menu… a four course meal. To accompany our dinner “The Man” chose a nice French Pinot Noir.
Our meal arrived relatively quickly, I began with Artichokes with Smoked Salmon (very yummy) while “The Man” opted for a Salad. For our second course we both went with the Chicken Soup (seems to be a house favourite). The soup was indeed a winner… homemade from scratch… very tasty. For Mains I had the Salmon with White Wine Sauce, “The Man” the Filet with Pepper Sauce… both our dishes came with Assorted Veggies and Potatoes. The meal was delicious. We finished up with Dessert, I got the Crème Brule while “The Man” went with the Chocolate Mousse. The Crème Brule was perfect, the Chocolate Mousse very chocolatey and very rich… so much so that he didn’t finish it.
Before heading back out into the cold we sipped on coffees, I had a cappuccino while "The Man" had a regular coffee… refills were offered, but the weather didn’t seem to be getting any better… so it was time to go. Again the personal service that we encountered upon our arrival, was part of our departure… help on with our coats etc. The Owner even remembered which coat belonged to whom, I was impressed considering there were 8 in our party. As we were leaving, the Chef came out of the Kitchen (we were the last patrons in the place), I believe he was married to the Lady who had served us all evening… they both thanked us very much for coming. Overall a great experience, we will be back.
PS… Added BONUS (value) they are in the Entertainment Book.
Four of us went out on to Le Panache Cafe on Saturday. In short, the food was good, service was great and the atmosphere is very nice.
Among the 4 of us we had:
The Crepe stuffed with meat and cheese. (Very Tasty)
Soup amazing, I can’t put my finger on what the taste was but very unique and delicious.
The garden salad (it was a garden salad)
The salmon (over cooked)
The lamb (delicious, just minty enough)
The Chicken (Gina didn’t comment, because she was too impressed with the service)
and a couple bottles of Pino Noir, not overly expensive and a decent bottle.
I will let you know what Gina though of the chicken.
Deserts were Crème Brule, and Lemon Cheese Cake. The CB was ok and Gina raved about how light and fresh the cheese cake was and had a nice crusty graham cracker bottom.
Also, FREE PARKING, which is a HUGE plus in China Town on a Saturday night.
Excellent restaurant and great atmosphere. The lamb in Mint sauce is delicious.
Service is great too, I beleive the name of the owner (and waitress) in the evening is Marie and she's extremely nice. Once I ordered the steak but there was no sauce on the menu. She happily suggested a mushroom sauce as they can add/alternate the recipe to anyone's delight. It was excellent.
We are now very often go there as a family for dinner on special occasions and are never disappointed. I highly recommend it as well.
Way backin January 2006 we tried this place for the first time.
We got there and were happy to find that it had it's own parking lot. We were the only ones there upon arrival and it remained that way for the 2 hours we were there. The hostess/owner seated us by the front window and lit a candle on our table. She was so nice and sweet and didn't make us feel weird about being her only customers. We didn't feel watched nor forgotten.
We both ordered the Table Hote
My meal
- Meat filled crepe.
- Chicken and Vegetable soup
- Duckling in Orange sauce with vegetables
- Creme Caramel
Brent's meal
- Meat filled crepe.
- Chicken and Vegetable soup
- Rack of Lamb in Mint Sauce with vegetables
- Lemon Cheesecake
We shared a bottle of Pinot Noir.
I have to say, every single thing was excellent. I won't go into the details of each dish unless specifically asked but it was unbleievably good. Even a simple broth soup was insanely good.
When she brought out my dessert, she had put a birthday candle in one of the strawberries decorating the plate. She was such a cute lady!
Total cost was about 118$ before tip. Definitely worth the quality of the food and the comfortable atmosphere.
We've been there two more times since then and they were both just as great.
