Stopped for an early dinner with my 8-year old daughter a few weeks ago. I had to send my roast beef sandwich back - it was horrible, the meat tasted 'off', and it was a mushy mess. My daughter ordered the beef sliders - very dry, tasteless. Will not go back.
The first time I stopped by, I decided not to try to make my way through the throng of smokers clogging up the stairway as they obviously thought this was the smoking area. I felt like I was at work.
I tried again today and asked the bartender for a Black & Tan. He obviously had no idea what I was talking about. I figured that if I had to explain it to him, I probably wouldn't like what he came up with. This is one of my basic tests for a pub. FAIL
I didn't stay to try the food. I didn't stay to try ANYthing.
The food here is disappointing. I've been there twice, once with a large group. Some of the comments made: "where is the chicken? oh there it is, i thought it was cabbage" (chicken curry), "my bun is soggy, and the burger is mushy" (veggie burger), "this is so dry i feel like i'm going to choke... can I have a lot of mayo please?" (tuna salad sandwich), "i wish there were more toppings" (nachos).
People seem to like the burgers and fries, though.
They also have an OK beer selection, with Beau's lug tread and Caffrey's on tap.
Well I went here a few days ago for lunch hoping to grab a bite to eat. I was blown away when ONLY half the restaurant was full and they told me if I wanted lunch it would be over an hour!! I again tried to go back the next day and the same thing happened. I don't think I'll be visiting here until lunch will be served to me within 20 minutes. Sorry to say but a half full restaurant and an hour for lunch is unacceptable!
First off, I was sitting on the patio and noticed her speaking very strongly towards an employee to the right of the bar in the hallway to the kitchen...my friend (the bartender) later told me what the conversation was about as he was in earshot. So no, I did not hear what she was saying but it was conveyed to me later. You make a fair point OsoloMeal.
Second, I find it interesting that I should be happy with what they bring me. Are you serious? If you order a burger and get a cheeseburger should you be happy about that...probably not. I did not get a menu and asked if they have any organic beer. The server then said they have an organic lager but couldn't remember the name. I took her word for it and was expecting one. They brought me Beau's. I do like Beau's but I wanted a lager, not an ale. Think of it this way, if I ask for a German Wheat beer, should I start listing off all the ones I know or would it be better to ask if they have it and they can tell me what they have? If they pride themselves on being a British pub then they should have a good knowledge of beer. This is what makes a good pub different from just another restaurant.
I'm just going to touch on one point. If you seriously are the beer man, you should know how few organic beers, let alone lagers are available in regular pubs.. i can only think of Mill Street. Please enlighten me. You should have known this and asked for it by name. The fact that they brought you an organic local beer is pretty good and you should have been happy about that.
This place clearly got off to a rocky start based on the other reviews here. I'd also probably still generally steer clear for dinner unless I was just looking for a burger and a few beers.
However, I've been really pleasantly surprised by their breakfast. Granted I wasn't expecting much given how meh the dinner food is, but this is a solid set of bacon and eggs. Comes with some nice multigrain toast, baked beans, banger, crispy homefries, and a little garnish of ripe fruit. The picture speaks for itself, I think. Given how dead the place is in the morning, you also get great service.
Don't waste your time lining up at the Tutti Frutti across the street when the Firkin and the Knight has better breakfast and no lines. Old Nepean is short on half-decent breakfast spots, so I say give this place a shot if you're tired of hob-nobbing with the elderly at Chances R, or slumming it with the college kids at Summerhay's.
