I've been ordering take-out from Spring Roll King for years and their food has always been amazing. I usually go with the fried tofu Panang curry with a side of white rice and some spring rolls. Their Panang is ridiculously good. Sweet and spicy and delicious! Their chicken balls are definitely above par, as they have a perfect balance of breading vs. chicken. Definitely my favourite Asian take-out joint in Ottawa. :)

I had my eye on this take out dive for a while because they claim they are the spring roll king - WRONG!!!! - What a disappointment i do not recommend going here if you appreciate fresh food. i dont't think value even comes in to play for thrifty students in the area with their portions - who wants more bad food for their money???

Bad spring rolls - too greasy, all cabbage and dipping sauce was nothing special.

Bad Almond Chicken Soo Guy - when this dish is well prepped it is sublime. Oriental house on Elgin can really serve this up right. Unfortunately, spring roll king really mess this up! Over cooked in the deep fry, chicken had the chewy consistency of cardboard... the ends of the chicken were an inedible write-off and the batter was way too heavy.

Bad veggie Pad Thai - If the dish were good, the massive serving would be welcome. there are really good pad thai's in the city: peace garden and savannah café to name 2. Spring roll king doesnt come close... what an insult to food. veggie pieces were cut too small and were soft & limp, no sour or tang to counter the sweet in the sauce... sauce was way too prominent not enough taste of the hot wok. Pad thai has a complex balance of flavours and textures and it all depends on the prep and cooking. My guess is the amount of food was too big for the wok and the moisture took over in the dish...makes for soggy yuk....

I will never eat here again it's really bad.

Shrimp Pad Thai was very good and had an ample amount of peanut sauce with a generous amount of chopped peanuts. I would buy it again. Around $10.

Did not try it, but I figured I would post a review from someone online. However, I asked for sticky rice and they did not have any - so, that's why I didn't end up getting it.

Here's a link to another person's review:

Spring Roll King on Rideau

Tried an order of the Panang curry with chicken last week from this place -- one of those late nights at work and didn't feel like cobbling together something from the fridge.

Very impressed. Fairly generous order (got 4 meals out of it for $10...but that's the miser instinct of a formerly penniless grad student. Probably should only stretch to 2, maybe 3, meals.) Nice flavouring, with every bite bringing a slightly different combination out. Good for spiciness level too -- bit of zing but again not so hot that the subtler flavours of coriander and lime leaves were lost.

Had an order of veg spring rolls too and happy to find that they were tasty, crisp but not greasy. At $1.20 each, good value.

Curious if anyone else has tried this place and what they had and thought, if so. They pride themselves on 3 kinds of cuisine -- Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese -- but Chinese and, to a lesser extent, Thai seemed to dominate the menu. And not an overly adventurous menu at that, but if my one order is any indication, may be a good reliable stop for conventional favourites.

Will try something meatless next time to report back
to you veggies! There's an eggplant curry on the menu that called to me.

In any case, within the takeout genre, makes a nice change from the ubiquitous shawarma.

Walking home at about 9 last night I passed by the “Springroll king” and I thought I would give their spring rolls a try. Unfortunately the namesake of the restaurant does not live up to the product. I picked up three spring rolls which took 15 minutes to make….

When I got them, they were completely greasy and had minimal ingredients. Definitely a frozen product, thus the fifteen minute wait time, kind of ridiculous. I must admit however that they were quite large and cheep at 1.20 a pop. But man, suuuper greasy on the way down, and I had a ring of oil around my mouth when I finished them. The plumb sauce was literally watered down. It was super runny, and it tasted like store bought sauce that was extremely diluted. LAME! I’m glad I didn’t order anything else. I can’t really comment on the other food here but, I’ll skip the so-called king of springrolls any day.

Two Thai Spring rolls served with regular sweet sauce. Crispy and fresh - quite good and reasonably priced!

Got the rice noodle wit beef in black bean sauce...worst idea I've ever had. One of the most disgusting meals I've ever had. I had to throw it out after three bites - what a waste of $9!

Plus, the delivery guy pulled one of those, "oh I don't have any change on me" which is not the first time this has happened with this restaurant. it pisses me off big time. Wont be ordering from here again.
