I'm not surprised. Shrimp-rats are a delicacy that hasn't made it to North America yet.

Last night I had dinner at the Mongolian Hot Pot for the first time and I was not disappointed!

The waitress came around to ask us what type of broth we would like. I chose the original broth since it was my first visit to this resto and I wasn't sure how spicy it would be. The original broth is very good but I would have preferred more of a kick so next time I think I will try the spicy broth.

While I was waiting for my broth I headed up to the buffet for a couple of spring rolls and to pick up a few items to add to my broth when it arrived. Items to pick from are an assortment of vegetables, seafood of all types (but no shrimp - rats!), pork, beef, chicken, and tofu. Most of the fare at the buffet are items I would expect to see at a Chinese buffet - lotus root, beef tripe, taro and the like. But, interestingly, they had spam on the buffet. It wasn't moving too fast-;)

For the dipping sauce I picked sesame paste, sesame oil, chili sauce, and satay. Half the fun was making the right flavour combination.

My only beef was that our group never saw the waitress after she took our broth orders. She never took drink orders (we would have loved a glass of water at least) and one of my dining companions lost his chopsticks twice. (He replaced his chopsticks with ones that were left out on empty tables.)

Other than that I had a lovely meal and I look forward to returning again.

my favorite hotpot place in ottawa! plenty of parking, and alcohol available!

If you are okay without sea food, lunch is more economical, only 13 dollars. Dinners have more selection, and the sea food is good!!!!!

The dessert and appetizer is very good. My favorite is the cold dish noodle mix! love it love it!

The sauce maybe hard to make without experienced help, but you can ask for help... lol

Warning: Proficiency with chopsticks required.

My first trip to Mongolian Hot Pot was with a Chinese international student looking for some tastes of home (she loved it).

What an experience for this white girl from a small town! This is a great place to come with friends, as there will be much lingering and time for chat while cooking your food.

It's a buffet style meal with a communal pot for you and your table mates to cook your food in. You can choose how spicy you want your broth to be.

Definitely keep the pot loaded so you can constantly pick stuff out of it. But don't leave anything in the pot at the end of the meal - I believe they charge by weight for any leftovers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Try at least one quail egg (but be warned, they will *burst* in your mouth). If you're worried about your food being cooked, ask a server. Otherwise, use your common sense.

I've been to Mongolian Hot Pot 4-5 times now and enjoyed it every time. The key is that you have to be ready to COOK. You actually have to work to keep a constant flow of food on your plate. You have to constantly fill your pot with raw items to cook while you eat, adjust the heat, etc. If you are feeling lazy this place will be your worst nightmare. With that said, I highly suggest their fresh cuttlefish, squid, fish, shrimps, mussels, and beef. The highlight really is the fresh, delicious seafood. One tip is to make your own sauce by mixing most ingredients at the sauce bar in one bowl. Dip your cooked items and enjoy! Unlike AYCE sushi, this high protein, low carb resto is quite easy on your digestive system compared to all the intestine clogging rice.

the key to unlocking flavors for a successful experience is all at the sauce bar @ mongolian hot pot. make up your own concoctions based on your palate and you're in for a wild ride with flavor flaves. baby. if you don't like it, you can only blame yourself! go back with your wee bowl and make a new combination.

insane seafood foodies edition 1.0 @ mongolian hot pot. outstanding value. there is no other place you can back up the truck and keep shoveling in seafood into a hot pot at an $18.99 bones cheap dinner. if you have a large family of growing teenagers to feed...take note.

the goodies are a' cookin'. things are ready when the broth reaches boiling point. finger is constantly adjusting the temperature button for proper cooking.

i particularly enjoy making a concoction of sesame paste, sesame oil, lots of satay, fresh garlic and herbs, hot chili oil in a sauce to dunk my meats and veggies. no salt at all in this restaurant. this uber healthy sauce has THE flavor IMHO that destroys all heavy salt/fatty/highly caloric demi-glace, glazes, creams at most other restaurants.

I have eaten at the Hot Pot twice now and both times I loved it. Great selection and very yummy.

Note - I prefer the small pots so that I don't have to choose the same food as my lunch buddies.

Our team from work went for lunch on Thursday 05 Feb, and it was excellent. Good food, good quantities, good quality. And, it's a fun, new experience!

I drove by the place yesterday, the paper on the windows was peeled down and you could see the waitstaff and chef talking, possibly even tasting their food.

As of this morning, everything seemed set to open as the inside appears prepped, cleaned and in order. I would predict this weekend, if not tonight.
