The now-jeweler was an old video conversion/repair place.
Malak is still there, evilly/cheerfully making me hungry when i walk by during baking hours.

Drove past the Old Ottawa South location tonight and they are no longer there (replaced by a jeweller).

I bought some baklava at Malak's. I believe it was the best baklava I have ever tried... I kept going there because the sweets literally melt in your mouth and the prices are pretty affordable.

Wanted to add I finally got around to going back to Brioche for some cookies and baklava and the baklava at Brioche was good, but not as good as the Malak one.
Also at Brioche when I was there it was super busy (like 15 people ahead of me and staff did not have too much time to answer my questions).

-I would have liked to know what the orange stuff on the cheese pastry I bought was...

The small cookies I bought at Brioche were not that good and not fresh (was surprized as the baklava was fine).
what I was told was a mini brownie was really hard and inedible.
so maybe buy cookies from Malak as they always seem fresh.

If you are on a budget Brioche might be better, but Malak seems fresher!
Still I am going to go back to Brioche to try the cakes in the display case at least once.

I remember eating Ashta ice cream as a kid during a trip to Beirut back in the 70's when the duct tape was still holding the country together.

I am curious to see if it tastes as I remember it.

thanks

I reviewed their ice cream on my blog.

I've been passing by this small pastry shop on Bank street for quite some time and finally found the time to stop and try the gelato and baklava that is freshly made in store.
I've sampled and bought at least a dozen kinds of gelato and sorbet and will write about that for this post.
For people who do not like dairy products there is usually a large selection of different sorbet made daily.
There is a pineapple sorbet that is very refreshing and has small bits of pineapple in it. I really noticed that this sorbet is different from what you find at the grocery store as there was real bits of fruit and no artificial colors in this sorbet was a white shade.
Mixed berry sorbet- that one was a dark purple shade and I'm guessing there was raspberry, blueberry and blackberry in it. It was quite sweet, but also nice with all the fruits in it.

The gelato I tried on my last visit was Banana gelato!
I did not buy this as I already had 2 small containers of gelato to bring home, but sampling this in the store the banana taste was very light and refreshing almost.
The banana gelato was a light beige shade and it seems there was a lot of real fruit in that too.

Now onto my gelato purchases!
Ashta "gelato" this is a type of Arabic custard like cream that is seasoned with rosewater and has either pistachios or roasted almonds in the mixture.
As well Ashta ice cream is thickened with a kind of tree gum that comes from Balsam (found this out speaking to the older man that works there).
This ice cream is very different from what the other places in Ottawa are making and I really recommend that people in that area of Bank st make a trip just to try this treat!
The Ashta ice cream was also nice after a dinner that was very spicy and really cools off your mouth too.
If you are having a dinner party, some of the ice creams from here would surely be a hit.
You can get a small cup for around $3 and other than that the ice creams are sold by the weight and I'd say a 250ml container is around $6

-I was there tonight getting a cup of sorbet (kiwi and some watermellon sorbet..very refreshing).
They also had some baklava-like pastries that have Ashta/custard in them.
Sometimes on the weekends they have those.
I also tried a safron cake and that would be good with coffee or tea instead of a muffin.

I like their sorbet because it has actual fruit in it.

Had some baklawa and cookies from there tonight. The worker was very friendly and helpful, offering up samples whenever I had questions. The cookies were very reminiscent of swiss pastries. Lots of them had apricot jam filling, almonds, chocolate, etc... delish, would go very well with coffee/espresso.

I'll second that one, Malak has a huge variety of Lebanese style baklawa, all of them were tasty that I had! The employee working there offered up samples to me to help me make my selections... very friendly, and very helpful!
