FOOD is HOT! - celebrity reviewer [Food/Vendor]

I just received the following via email:

--------------------
Hi Foodies:
My husband and I are heading to Ottawa for the weekend, and we would like some food recommendations. Before you send us to a site link ... we were hoping for something a bit more specific. So far, we tend to agree with everything that your "food is hot" blogger has posted. So, can you recommend something that is not too expensive, great, and has a good wine list (any wine bars in the area?) ?

Any sort of reply would be wonderful.
--------------------

So there you have it. They live in Montréal, which of course is where many of us go when we want really good food.

* Not too expensive.
* Good food.
* Good wine list.

What are your suggestions? Replies are of course also welcome from people who do *not* call themselves FOOD is HOT! ;-)

Nice one FIH!!!

After having our 5th fabulous meal at Allium Saturday night, I will have to recommend it once again.

Two cocktails, two apps, two mains, two glasses of wine and one dessert - $100. You can't beat that, especially for the quality of the food.

My review will be under Buzz shortly.

I think that I got my money's worth from the Wellington Gastropub; the food was great, the wine list is good and not a bank-breaker, and the bartender has a bitchin' moustache ;)

Oh the pressure! The only "winebar" that I can think of is Vineyards in the market, but I can't really reccomend their food, or their prices lol. Let's see, I would second the Wellington Gastropub - I've only been there once for appetizers but the time we did spend there was very positive, and also a few doors down is Petit Bill's Bistro which features 20 (!) wines by the glass - one of the owners is a sommalier. Food is classic bistro fare, daily specials, and a tapas menu for snacking. For something more upscale (and more expensive, but not toooo bad - definetly "fine dining" prices though), Beckta can't be beat for food and wine pairings. Again, the owner is a sommalier, so wine is at the forefront and the selection is excellent.

If you're looking for something a little more low-key, you can try The Wood on Wellington, or the Heart and Crown on Preston; they are just pubs, so nothing special, but they have a nice selection of wines and beers and a slightly more upscale/creative menu than most pubs - although selections can be hit-or-miss at the Wood, so I usually stick to burgers or calzone.

As with F-i-H I wouldn't recommend Vineyards...

fourth avenue wine bar, juniper, beckta, black cat cafe, eighteen. All of these places I would recommend.

Hi all,
We were the Montrealers that attempted to post, but somehow managed to email somebody. Thank you for all your help, we will definitely try out some of those restaurants and bars -- and if not this trip, then next.

We'll follow up on our experiences in Ottawa, and feel free to contact us for any Montreal tips if you need them.

(Oh, and a special "shout out" to "Food is Hot" -- you lived up to the pressure just fine -- thanks!) :)
