DIY PID-SSR pit controller sort of dealy [General]

2011 Dec 31
EDIT: (note to self, don't post drunk) :-)

Anyone know where I can get fan to build a DIY pit master dealy?

I have a PID + SSR that I had bought a few years ago for a brewing RIMS system (which incidentally is a very similar application to sous vide)

Bump in case it does not show up at the top of your unread list with an edit ...

Well, you're obviously not talking about the typical plastic fan or it would melt. Do you have ANY kind of specs? Size, materials, speed, power, temperature resistance ...

The existing BBQ controller vendors sell fans as a standalone purchase. Of course then you'd be paying their markup, which is what you're trying to avoid by DIY...

I can still save a lot of money warby since the PID+SSR is likely the most expensive part. Though I don't see fans on the Pitmaster IQ site I do see the air adapters relatively cheap

store.pitmasteriq.com

Only fan I've found so far is 72 bucks which is too expensive

On my way to Princess Auto for other reasons so will see what they have :-)

Ouch! Yeah, I just checked and the fan I have is $60: www.rocksbarbque.com

a bunch of the guys on a smoking forum i read use products from Grainger to build their fans. they have a Canadian sub (Acklands Grainger) so i would look at their website and see if you can find what you need.

i would really consider buying a pre-fabbed proven/tested unit here though. it's a high $ outlay for a DIY...

It is not high outlay where I already have a PID and SSR though monty. Ideally I should be able to put something together for another 50 bucks or so.

This reminds me of the debates we techies would have back in the late seventies.

Build an stereo amp or buy one ?? Yes ... one could build one of these amps for less than the cost of a Pioneer or Sansui but ...... (and that's many 'BUT's).

Some buts comparisons:

AMP --------------------------------------------------------- Pit Controller

Over all quality of finished product ? -------------------- ditto
Looks like sh*t ---------------------------------------------- ditto
Not CSA/Hydro approved or safe --------------------- Weather resistant ?
Quality components cost more than finished good ------ ditto ?
Jury rigged stuff breaks more easily ----------------------- ditto
Time and effort spent ---------------------------------------- ditto

Not much for fans at PA. They did have a squirrel cage fan about the right size but it did not have a housing and I was not up to figuring out what to do about that. I did see an Ackland Grainger next door though ;-) So I'll check them later.

BTW monty, do you recall the forum where you might have seen this?

Bradley Smoker forums. there are quite a few threads over there on it. you might be able to find a better solution on an egghead forum as the Bradley setup is quite different. in any event, Grainger seems to have an assortment of reasonably priced fans.

Was there another thread where off-the-shelf controllers were discussed?

I cannot find one ...
