Mushrooms [Food/Vendor]

Looking for a good place to get good mushrooms, wild, farmed, exotic.

In the forest!

Other than that, Herb & Spice carries some interesting varieties (porcini, chanterelle, blewit, etc) from time to time. Le Coprin hasn't made it out consistently to the Farmer's market this year due to familial obligations, but you could privately order some through them.

Thanks Chimichimi, I need to take a course or something on harvesting in the bush. Know of any? or good books?

chopper well Chimichimi is definitely our mushroom expert on ottawafoodies-;) However Martha Weber leads wild edibles hikes. I'm not sure if she forages for mushrooms as well. She was mentioned in our urban foraging thread: Forum - Urban Foraging I can't seem to get the link to send you to the exact spot in the thread but Martha is mentioned way at the end.

for all things shrooms, the word according to chimi is gospel. i've even learned to identify some of the local shrooms that can cause quick fatality. don't get any fancy ideas ;) but do research and due diligence!

chopper I just remembered Kombu mentioning that there is a mushroom foraging group on the Quebec side: Forum - Hunters and Gatherers..

byward fruit I think they are called, beside the cheese shops, in front of all the stalls. they normally have some crazy mushrooms. They had matsutake last week.

found these good lookin' fresh chanterelles at herb and spice...

Those look way better than the scrawny, half-eaten chanties I found last weekend in the bush - I did find a beautiful coral that I bbq'd when I got home.

Martha Webers website is www.dandelionjam.com/, she can be contacted through there. She covered some mushroom stuff in her edible wild course this spring, but due to it being early in the season there was only a limited amount that could be covered (she did common morels [Morchella esculenta], oysters [Pleurotus ostreatus] and dryad's saddles [Polyporus squamosus]). She's very nice, if you can get to know her she'll happily look at pictures or samples of any plant you're trying to identify and help you out. Also, having a science background she can guide you to good texts, as there are a lot of bad foraging books out there.

How much did you pay for those chanterelles? Curious to know the market price right now...

2010 Sep 6
I'm assuming they're definitely over-charging, but still phenomenal.

Those ones above (saskachewan chanterelles) came to $16 total (@ 39.99/lb).

On Friday, I saw local chanterelles at the Byward fruit market - they were charging 7.99 / 100 gram (estimating that works out to about the same price, approximately $80-90 / kg).

These fresh morels from Oregon were also 39.99/lb, several months ago when they were in season.

the Mushroom Lady, there's a typo in the URL you posted and also a case problem. I guessed at using "mushroomwalks.html" instead of "MushroomWalks.html" and it worked...
