pho [Food/Vendor]

2009 Jun 28
Hi all:

My partner and I keep seeing new pho places on south Bank Street and Merivale Road (for example). My question is: are they as good as the ones in "China town" on Somerset West and that locale, or are they "toned down" for "Westerners", as my partner suspects? Or are they an expression of our new immigrant population who may have moved to these areas? I wouldn't want to diss them with that assumption, and would stop in if they are authentic.

Cheers, Glinda

Why not check out the reviews here? Go to "tags" and then "Vietnamese", or just search on "pho" in the search box

Glinda if you are looking for a pho place on Merivale I have only been to Pho Maxim next door to Swiss Chalet and it is mediocre at best. There is the Sea King restaurant a little further up Merivale near Nicastros - I haven't been yet but it has already been reviewed on this site.

As for Bank Street there is Mongolian Hotpot on Bank near Riverside and Thai Lana on Bank near Hunt Club.

not to say places like Pho Maxim aren't authentic, but i stick to Chinatown largely because a) it's usually cheaper b) the food is better. total generalization but based on my experiences the Viet places in the Somerset area do it best. mind you, there are quite a few pho places popping up - i'm sure there are some gems outside of this vicinity.
