Strange Foodie moments [General]

2009 Jun 4
OK it's MOMENT not MOMMENT for the grammar police.

I kind of laugh about this cyber existence we all have as OFs. I laughed reading about some foodies getting "outed" by other foodies while going about their business in the community.

Tonight, I had my own bizarre foodie moment. I went to Huong's Vietnamese Bistro, on Booth st. which I favoribly reviewed at the beginning of May. Wandered in, ordered some food to go and then said I was going for a walk and would be back.

Upon my return, I noticed my review posted in the window from Ottawa Foodies. I laughed but didn't reveal my identity.

Kinda cool.

The food was spot on!

I must have passed by just a bit later...because there's now a big photo of you leaving with your order posted beside the review!
:)

I think I've mentioned this, but about four months after the Candy Store opened (happy first anniversary, btw!), I walked in only to hear SweetTooth screaming "you're Lady Who Brunches". There was a great deal of blushing from me, and I've been found out. Some vendors, luckily, are more/less aware than ottawa foodies than others...

"The Man" and I frequent a couple of spots regularly, and the occasional Vendor has figured out that we are Food & Think... which doesn't really bother me, but I wish I was totally anonymous because I do find that it makes writing Reviews easier (figure the day will come when something negative will be experienced / written). Once we visited a regular spot, and the Owner (who also has an account on OF) came over and said "Wow must be Ottawa Foodie Night" and then pointed at another table and told me the User Names of the folks sitting there... I thought that was a bit wierd / awkward, thankfully no real 3-D names were revealed.

Clearly I'm not doing it right. Nobody's claimed to know who I am!

Guess this means that, rather than the usual wait of a week and a bit to post my reviews, I should explicitly state in my reviews when I went and what time and what I was wearing.

By the way, how were you outed, LWB? What specifically tipped SweetTooth off? I ask because it's tough to do when we don't post our real pictures here!

I think it was the Galler bars, in all honesty. Which, for those of you who have read my reviews of the candy store, would make a lot of sense.

Momomoto - LOL, maybe you don't have to go so far as telling us what you are wearing... as I am guessing you own a black leather jacket... I have a sneaking suspicion that you and I were both at Beau's one day at the same time... I base that on some of the things you said shortly before and after your visit in a Forum Topic.

Of course, it would have been way too forward (and presumptuous) on my part to just walk up and say "Hey are you Momomoto from OF"... besides if it was you, you weren't alone, and one never knows if the OF Member's friends & family knows of this hobby.
;-)

For the record, as I said it feels wierd when it happens with a Vendor, then I don't feel so open to saying what I want in a Review... I much prefer to be anonymous like a Newspaper Food Critic... which is part of the reason I always post my Reviews at least a week or more after my visit (and sometimes, a whole lot longer... but that is procrastination on my part more than anything else).

"...and one never knows if the OF Member's friends & family knows of this hobby"

Food&Think, you make it sound so... dirty! Maybe this is how we got on the Google Adsense naughty list -- we're a food porn site and they explicitly say no porn allowed! ;-)

Fresh Foodie - LOL, I didn't mean to make it sound like some dirty little secret, I just know that being of "a certain age" that some people still look upon the Internet for anything other than e-mail and research as "something not to be trusted" and a waste of time (they will never be willing to accept such things as Facebook, Twitter, Communities, On-Line Dating etc) Now of course most of these folks are of my parent's generation, but some are also of mine... (which means there is a real cross-section say between 50 and 90, many of whom could easily fit the demographic of a OF Member's Parent)... they can't understand what the "attraction" is in all these means of electronic communication. Then there are those who would rather not let their colleagues (say working mates, friends, etc) know how they spend their FREE time (or where they spend it on line).

As for "food porn" I am thinking you might be onto something there... could it be possible that the term "porn" somehow caused the Website an issue. Beyond that the only other thing I can think of was that it is someway linked to the major discussion of that timeframe (foie gras, etc).

Ha! I'm glad you didn't ask the person, F&T, because I don't think that was me. I haven't visited Beau's in monnnnnnths, and haven't worn my ol' leather jacket in years.

Unless it was that long ago!

Oh Oh, my bbq posting is causing the naughty adds to show up. Now I'm in trouble!

BTW F&T - I was a very early internet user, and I still think Facebook is a CIA plot to track people :) Now linked in, thats a different story.

Sourdough - LOL @ the CIA Facebook comment... and sure the Internet is just a whole Big Brother concept anyways.

We all like to think that in a community (be it here on OF or out in the real world that bad things don't happen... but they do). And unfortunately there are people in the world who aren't as nice as all of us ;-)

Considering the amount of "strange dudes" who have come by here in the last few months and posted incredible stuff about people they have grudges with (mostly former employers), it seems that indeed there are a variety of people who can be found in any community (including this one).
