Cheese of the month near Ottawa? [General]
2009 Mar 6
Not exactly near Ottawa but a colleague in Calgary has highly recommended Janice Beaton Fine Cheese. They do ship here but for an additional charge, of course. Their list of cheeses is quite something.
Each month your cousin will get a box that includes three 250g pieces (approximately a half pound of each) along with descriptions and cheese lore.

Alternative idea: Though it's always SO exciting to receive a special surprise in the mail (too bad it doesn't arrive on a pony too, huh?) she could have so much MORE cheesy goodness for those/your dollars if she went somewhere here.
La Bottega (www.ottawafoodies.com) carries ~200 different cheeses. You could get her a book on cheese, some La Bottega Gift Certificates (write CHEESE across them :)) and she could go exploring, inhaling and choosing.

There's also the House of Cheese/International Cheese (also in the Byward Market).

Monkey Feet - One of my kids had an interest in the human body (thought about being a Dr. for awhile)... anyways I got a book that featured all of the body's systems... Respiratory System, Circulatory System, Digestive System, Skeletal System, Nervous System, etc... Lots of colourful diagrams and acetate overlays. If you look at Chapters you might find something similar. It was a BIG HIT!

As an aside, La Bottega offers "Gift Cards" now, rather than certificates. The nice this about this, is that you could put 12 months (times) cost of cheese on the card, and have her go shopping each month for a new cheese to try, based upon what she read about....Also, I`m sure you could find an amazing cheese cookbook with information about cheese....Yum, yum. A young girl after my own heart.

I bought my little cousin this book - DUMONT'S LEXICON OF CHEESE Guide Origin Types Taste. She LOVES the book and wants to try to make cheese!!!! The book is perfect for her. It's compact and has pics with a description of the cheese. I am going to buy one for myself!
Thanks for the suggestion folks! It worked out GREAT!
Before I got the book I went to La Bottega and surveyed. The House of Cheese was closed when I got there, but will try to go soon. I will start her of with Mozzerella and Beaufort. Hopefully she will enjoy hard cheeses.
Thanks again!!!!

Ooh that cheese book looks awesome. I think I know what I want for my birthday!
For future reference, Winery-to-Home offers a cheese and wine subscription in various combinations. Their wine selections are quality wines reviewed by Tony Aspler and David Lawrason. I believe their site also has reviews of artisanal cheeses.
And when it comes to cheese, it pays to shop around, especially in the Market. Last time I was at La Bottega, their Reggiano Parmesan was roughly $10 cheaper per kilo than House of Cheese.

This week they have pecorino romano & provolone picante on special. They also have a pretty good deal on whole chickens!

I found the cheese book to be a great book for the younger kids. It's compact and not a huge book to scare them away. It's got lots of pictures so it won't be all reading. It also includes histories of cheeses, recipes, wine pairing and a description how each cheese tastes.
It was really difficult to find in Ottawa book stores, so I had to buy it on eBay. Now I need to buy one for myself.

My little cousin is fond of cheese, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to try to get her interested in culinary. She's only 10...I think...so I figure why not start her off early.
Or maybe I can just buy the cheese here and make it look all official. But it would be a lot of work. Research, packing and knowing where to find good cheese.
Any info would help.
Thanks!!!
