Upper Canada Cranberries [Food/Vendor]

2008 Oct 8
I was just reading Ron Eade's fine blog and (what?!) there's a commercial cranberry grower, Upper Canada Cranberries, south of the Ottawa airport on Stagecoach Road! Or did everyone know this but me?!
Owner Lyle Slater always yearned to get back to farming and, in 1996, he obtained 100 acres of land that he found to be peaty/highly acidic – and just perfect for cranberries.
During the season (i.e. now) you can call ahead & visit or you can pick up a bag/bags at the Ottawa Farmers' Market (Lansdowne Park) or the Carp Farmers' Market.

And the story on Ron's blog:

I'm thinking we should start renting a bus for group field trips. :)

AMR - No you were not alone... this topic came up back in September when we were all discussing Garlic, see ottawafoodies.com (scroll down to the highlighted post) and read from there on for more info.

Lyle makes the most incredible "Cran-bee" drink, which is essentially cranberry concentrate, diluted and sweetened with local honey. SO good! Can also be found at the markets.

I drove by there on Wednesday on route somewhere else. There is a huge sign on the road so you can't miss it if you're heading that way :-)

lady who brunches Thanks for the tip about the "Cran-bee" drink. I went to the market after work yesterday and it seemed to be selling well.

Actually all their products (fresh cranberries, sauce, etc.) were just flying off the shelves yesterday as a result of the article AMR posted above. If anyone is planning on visiting their stand on Sunday it might be a good idea to get there early-:)
