Time for me to do some work on making my own ... will keep you posted :-)

Dropped by Canlok to pick up a few more bags of Basques maple charcoal and the price has risen considerably, as follows:

4 kg - $9.95 + HST
8 kg - $18.95 + HST

It's still worth buying instead of the ubiquitous Kingsford/Royal Oak stuff, but now only because of superior quality rather than superior price. :-)

Thanks for the tip FF ..I will have to give it a try for sure. Just as an FYI, here is a link to a pretty good database of lump Charcoal that you can buy. Mostly in the USA. I have done a trip across the border and went to several stores in New York State - ACE hardware seems to have pretty good selection of what is on the link:

The Duraflame bag can be bought at Food Basics - very good for the Price. But stock up soon since they will be hiding them in the back before the end of Sept.

The Grateful Griller got me hooked on this awesome sugar maple lump charcoal from Basques (www.basquescharcoal.com).

Canlok Stone is one of the official distributors for the Ottawa area. They sell stone, bricks, and this specific brand of lump charcoal. Go figure. ;-)

At $8.15+GST per 4 kg bag, it is really worth getting. I find it to be very noticeably superior to Kingsford, both in its willingness to ignite and in the flavour it imparts to the food.

Costco is once again carrying Basques All Natural Lump this year. The price is unchanged from last year -- $11.99 for an 8kg bag.

I have also used Basques on my egg although I normally use Maple Leaf. I have never noticed any chemical smell nor does it affect my ability to control temperatures. I did find that it sparked more when I lit it compared to Maple Leaf. From what I gather, black smoke is not uncommon once the charcoal has been lit so that should not be a worry.

I can't comment on Basques as I use Maple Leaf which I love, but the above link will take you to a site where they rate various charcoal. This won't answer your questions but you might get some useful info out of it.

I have been burning my first bag of Basques charcoal ( I had a lot of Royal Oak from the last Canadian Tire sale) and I have a few questions for those of you that have used it before:

Do you find that it burns really hot? I find that the temp on my BGE can really get away from me with this stuff.

Do you find that there is a faint chemical smell to the smoke it gives off?

The Egg was clean (ish) but the charcoal gave off a thick, black smoke at one point on a new burn. Normal?

No real complaints but just looking for some feedback.

Thanks!

Basques maple charcoal is available now at Costco at by far the best price around. $12 for an 8 kg bag. (ref: Forum - Charcoal Best Prices Best Brands)

I've been using nothing but Basques ever since trying it 3 years ago. Wonderful stuff!

Feel like I've hit the mother lode of lump charcoal! McCartney is selling their 4 kg bags of Basques Sugar Maple lump for $6.65 (compared to $10+ from other retailers). Look for the Cash & Carry sign at the side of their building. Hours are 5 am - 2:30 pm Monday - Friday.

I haven't tried the lump yet but it comes highly recommended. I did open a bag and there are a lot of big pieces, which I was thrilled to see (the last 2 bags of Royal Oak from Cdn Tire were useless).
