Quick Review on the Calvina Gourmet Bacon Cheese Burger

Burger 1/5
It only gets a 1 because I am pretty sure that it was beef. Otherwise it was frozen, incredibly thin and made of the worst quality ground beef. I found at least 3 “hard things” while eating it.

Bun 1/5
It a was stale sort of foccia bread with herbs and various other un-cheeseburgery stuff. Terrible. It was also about 50% bigger than the burger

Bacon 2/5

Real bacon, but since it came out of a plastic shopping bag and directly onto my burger I can give it no more than 2, but compared to the bun and burger it was twice as good. Maybe the burger and bun should combine for 1 point…?

Cheese 1/5

Ah, forget it. The burger was terrible, don’t ever get one.

Total cost with a can of coke $8.25

Irene's Pub Bank St.

Burger 2/5
Irene’s served up a fresh homemade patty irregular shape and all. 1 inch thick. It was cooked medium with clear juice running when it came, hot and juicy. The first bite came as a bit of a surprise. The patty was seasoned with a bit of a tex-mex seasoning. There were 5 burgers ordered around our table and I have to say I was the least fanatical about the patty. The flavour was most similar to Old El Paso Taco Seasoning, or basically cumin and chilli powder. Gina seemed to be a fan but I am a meat purist and think that beef should taste like beef. So I disapprove. If you are interested in a different patty experience give it a try. If you are looking for a champion burger, I have to say this isn’t it.

Bun 4/5
GREAT BUN! It was a toasted, fresh bun with no seeds, just a little flour Kaiser Style. It was soft on the inside and still warm when it came to the table. Although it was slightly bigger around than the patty, something I discourage, it wasn’t too thick, which is great for the meat to bun ratio. The toasting was just enough that the juice of the patty never soaked through the bun.
4/5

Toppings 2/5
Fresh romaine lettuce, red onion and 2 slices of tomato. The tomato on my burger was the top of the tomato and was a bit green, not so hot. The lettuce was fresh and crisp and served on the bun side of the open faced burger, so not wilted or dark green when it arrived. Red onion was very thinly sliced. All the condiments were on the side, as they should be. Mustard and relish were the school cafeteria style packages. I prefer Heinz ketchup, Heinz relish and French’s yellow mustard, all in bottles. Also I have to insist that failure to include a dill pickle is an automatic 1 point deduction.

Bacon 3/5
2 strips (full strips) cooked a while before the burger and not crispy. Not terribly great but lots of it.

Cheese3/5
Medium cheddar nicely melted, a little oily and not quite sharp enough. There was plenty to cover the whole patty. Served under the bacon.

Over all 14/25

Not a great score. Gina would disagree and say that the patty deserves a 3 which would bring it ahead to 15 but I can’t get past that seasoning. Maybe if it was served with avocado, sour cream, shredded lettuce and no bacon, but I would never put bacon on a taco so why put taco seasoning on a burger.

Total Cost
Two Bacon Cheese Burgers
Fries included. (They were good but I think Irene’s could use an oil change because the fries were REALLY dark)
Tip

$28

I'll fix things up, FiH. Rather than lump this under the "Hamburgers" food though, I think I'll rename it to "Bacon Cheeseburger" because I think it deserves its own category, especially if Ian is going to review this one breed of burger all over town. :-)

FF - I am confused, the restaurat is "The Newport" right? or "The Classic"? Could this entry be moved to a "Newport" entry since it is a Newport review...?

Gina and I went to the Newport for the first bacon cheese burger in the "Best Bacon Cheese Burger" quest. As we eat them we will rate them on 5 criterion, Bun, burger, toppings, bacon, and cheese.

What follows is the Newport’s offering.

Burger: 3/5
Fresh, homemade patty, cooked to medium. ¼ lb before cooking so it came in a little thin after cooking and left a little less juice than I would like. For the thickness of this burger a little less bun would be nice. Or a softer bun, but we’ll get to that. It was free of any sort of seasoning or fillings in the burger, 100% beef.

Bun 3/5
Cornmeal topped Kaiser-bun, big and thick and not that fresh. With the thin patty there was about 2 inches of bun for the ¼ inch of patty, a little too much, especially since it was a bit dry.

Toppings 4/5
Fresh Romaine Lettuce (the top part not the bottom stalk part), very fresh
One slice white onion (Gina thought it was too much, but I think on an open face burger you can take a few rings off)
One slice fresh plum tomato, good tomato
Mustard, decent amount.
Relish, LOTS.
Ketchup on the side.
IMHO if you are going to put one condiment on the side, put it all on the side. There was a little too much relish and I had to ask for ketchup, big no-no in my book. As I was waiting for ketchup burger was cooling and my Poutine was getting soggy.

Bacon 3/5
3 strips, cooked a long time before I got the burger, a little over cooked and a bit too crispy, not chewy at all.

Cheese 3/5
One slice of real American Cheddar, so pretty mild, non-descript cheese, under the over-crisp bacon.

Overall 16/25

Not a great score. Most of the problems were the 3 B’s, bun, bacon, and burger. If they thicken up the patty, fresh soft buns daily and get the bacon a bit chewier we would have a destination burger. Otherwise, Gina says “Stick to the pizza, it is unreal”.

Friendly but not too speedy service, waiting for ketchup… good prices,
2 Bacon Cheese burgers
1 soup
1 poutine
1 coke
I pack grape bubble gum
Tip
$25

I will try and get a picture for the next burger.

The Banquet Burger here is the best deal in town. A very respectable bacon cheeseburger, complete with tomatoes and sauteed onions. Splurge for the platter (fries and coleslaw) -- it will still cost you less than an inferior meal at a fast food chain.

Diagram of my burger. The bacon was great. Fresh toppings. It's not a gourmet burger, but simple and tasty.

The "Hintonburger"

'6oz bacon cheeseburger with signature bbq sauce'

I found the patty was greasy, but really good. A nice 'meaty' taste to the patty. Not too thick, not too thin.

This was the FH's main - he will try a burger anyplace we go. He tells me this one was exceptional! I had some of his fries, which were also good.
