Another preset pattern that we ordered a few years back.

Another one where we just gave them a general description and they did the rest. That's of course the birthday boy and his mom.

An off-the-shelf sort of dealie for my wife's birthday

This is one where we just gave them a general description of what we wanted and they did the rest. It was not a pre-set design. We were very impressed!

If all you've ever bought is supermarket cake then you've never had a real birthday cake.

We've been buying our birthday cakes here for 5 years now and are very disappointed to see them move out of Hintonburg and up onto Merivale. As exceptionally pleased as we have been with them, we probably won't visit them at the new location because the convenience factor is now gone. We'll likely switch to making our own. Though we may consider taking one of their cake courses.

We tried the birthday white cake from Sobey's. It was very good. I can guarantee you they use more eggs than regular birthday cake bought from say Metro or other grocery stores.

My son has a mild egg allergy. He can eat cakes from most grocery store but the one from Sobey's, it makes his tongue 'feels funny'.

Last week i had to get a birthday cake for my daughters 5th birthday (special year)...my mother told me to try Sobeys so i thought i would give it a shot. I was a little sceptical because I never thought about a grocery store before for cakes. WOW WAS I SURPRISED!!! The cake I bought was so delicious and what a hit! The little princess toys they put on top of her cake made her grin ear to ear. She still has them on her nightstand (after i washed them, of course).
I am going to be going there everytime now. And it was cheaper than the bakery i used to go to.
I heard they are opening a new store in Ottawa soon, which makes me really excited because it is a lot closer to my house. My mom says its suposed to be like the new 'market' feel stores. She lives in Kitchener and one like it just opened up a couple months ago. I am going to her house for dinner this weekend so I will blog back and let you know how it is.

I went with Fresh Foodie's recommendation for vanilla cake from Sobeys for my son's 5th birthday. Ordered a cake made of small cupcakes, both in vanilla and chocolate. The vanilla was much better, and close to a good Betty Crocker ready mix cake (a way to say it is not your typical flavorless sponge). The frosting was more than generous, which kept moms and dads at the party on toes, and the kids on cloud nine. The price was excellent, something around 45 bucks for a 32 decorated cupcakes + 2 iron man toys + candles.

We were as surprised as anyone to find that Sobey's makes some of the best birthday cake around. They do all the usual kid-type themes and also custom ones by request. This past Saturday, we celebrated our kids' 5th birthday with a chocolate "Dinosaur Skeletons" cake and a white "Disney Princess" cake, both from Sobeys.

You know, I'd even go so far as to put the flavour of their white cake up against any other white cake in town. Over the years we've tried cakes from various fancy bakeries, grocery stores, and specialty cake shops all over Ottawa and now our quest for birthday cake perfection might finally be over. We used to source them from the Cake Shop but stopped after a noticeable degradation of flavour a few years ago. What's the point of real buttercream icing if it doesn't taste better?

Sobeys chocolate cake is good too: fluffy, with a satisfying moist chewiness to it. But I wouldn't begin to compare it to, say, a Chocolate Mousse Cake from 3 Tarts. That white one is something else though -- everything an iced white cake should be!

holy moley, the cake shop is crazy expensive. i just got price quotes back for a 3D birthday cake request I sent them and it starts at $460 and up!!

FYI: Here's an example of what I wanted: cakesbymelodie.com

I understand its art but I think $460 is just a tad high LOL

Thank goodness I found a lady who does excellent cake designs and has much much more reasonable rates. Can't wait for my bday cake!

I also frequent this store regularly and always get a nice greeting. That being said they are only human and might just have had an off moment when you came in to the store.
When I go to my bank I sometimes don't get a personal greeting but don't rush home to write a negative review on my experience. I weigh up my total experience and leave it at that, an off moment!
Hope you give them another try.

We frequently get cakes from The Cake Shop. As both my children have allergies I love being able to let my kids pick whatever they want from there. The service is hit and miss, sometimes they're very friendly, other times not even a smile or thank you - and we're regulars. We do find there is too much icing on the bday cakes, but just scrape it off. We like their cakes, but have had better and for less. For us though the peace of mind on the allergy front outweighs everything else.

farm boy at terry fox drive have just supported a launch to a local company making european cakes.
cakes all have beutiful ribbons on then great for a gift or birthday.very french in stlye belgian chocolate and the company uses local produse as much as possible. The company's name is exquisite desserts. i am also told they only use butter, eggs and fresh cream (not magarine or sythetics). so in other words, REAL cakes. went there when they had samples. very very good. word on the street is the citrus buttercream nd harlequin mousse are to die for. not to mention individuals. just as much taste, smaller portions, awesome to serve at parties (impress the in-laws). or, if you don't have to deal with in-laws, great to impress fellow foodies.

Janice blew me away with her excellent customer service, enthusiasm and extremely reasonable prices. When I sent out an email to all the local cake shops requesting quotes for a birthday cake, Janice responded very quickly with a great quote and told me she could easily do the cake within a week's time (I thought the request might be too "last minute").

This is the first time using any cake service and I was very pleasantly surprised at the ease of the process, especially for a design that I consider to be fairly complicated. Most importantly, she produced a gorgeous chocolate fudge 3D cake with the design I had requested and everyone thought it tasted wonderful.

Thank you Janice for saving me (literally!) hundreds of dollars and doing a beautiful job on the cake. Highly recommended!
