Came here for the first time and ordered the calamari. I came for the chicken but with the calamari being 7.99 compared to 21.99 for spicy boneless chicken it was an easy choice considering I wasn’t that hungry. It was very solid and cooked well. It came with two rounds of complimentary appetizers, one had three small cold servings: rough chopped slaw, watery macaroni noodles and cubed daikon radish. Second was warm corn that was likely soaked in some kind of a sugary solution. I wasn’t expecting it and it was a nice gesture but I wasn’t a fan of any of them other than the daikon.
Dropped into the Barrhaven location around 8pm on Friday evening and just a few other tables were occupied. The sizzly-bubbly Cheese Corn ($10) had an addictive sweet-salty-chewy quality to it. This dish is popular in Korea for good reason!
I have been wanting to try The Fry for a while and Monday's Ice day was a perfect day to order in so I opted for their UberEats Lunch combo with Fries, Chicken, and a can of pop for 10$ and I upgraded to boneless for 2$ and sweet & sour sauce for 1.50$. Just to note boneless does not guarantee white meat as I was hoping considering the 2$ extra charge - out of the 5 "chunks" of chicken only one was white meat.
Overall I thought the chicken was good although it was a little soggy by the time it arrived. The flavours were good and I'm sure if it hadnt waited for delvery time the crisp I love would have been there as well. The fries were definitely of a pre-fab variety but I did enjoy the crispy coating... Everything came with a teeny cup of daikon and an even teenier ketchup.
I'd really like to see how the chicken fares fresh in the restaurant. I think next time I will try the sauceless version :)
They are now open for lunch so we stopped by to try the fried chicken. They offer only basic combo meals. Combo for one was $12.95 that includes soup and/or Korean Salad and a half fried chicken. I say and/or because it wasn't really clear what I was getting or what was included as they seemed to be out of some stuff. Despite this minor hiccup, the miso soup was good and the spicy version of the fried chicken was great. I have never had this before so I can't comment on how authentic the chicken is but if you like yours crunchy, spicy, sweet and garlicky , then here is the place.
I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Korean fried chicken. On one hand, I absolutely love crunchy-crispy fried chicken and Korean food in general; on the other hand, I don't like savoury dishes that are sweet.
We opted for the Boneless Green Onion Chicken (Small, $22) thinking that it wouldn't have a sweet sauce. Unfortunately it did. So I'd get this again but I'd request the sauce on the side. I did ask for hot sauce and that added a nice bit of oomph.
The chicken itself was luxuriously crunchy on the outside and moist inside. It was topped with generous clumpy curls of shredded scallions. The sauce kind of ruined it for me but that's a case of caveat emptor.
This small portion was absolutely huge! The menu says it serves 2-3 people and they clearly mean 3 hungry people or 2 absolute piggies like us (me). There were at least 12 chunks, all of them significantly larger than bite sized. The value here is very good.
Spicy fried chicken hit all the right notes - sticky, fried, crunchy, spicy, delicious. Also shared the spicy rice cakes and some fries which were both fine but it's all about the chicken.
