I thought this place might have taken a page from the Americans where you can find some really great food at a gas station. I was sorely wrong. Second place this weekend where the food was really bad. I ordered a burrito(carnitas). From the mushy overcooked rice that had been sitting for hours to the very oily off tasting pork there is really not much good to say about this place. While waiting I could hear the spatula hitting the flattop like a jack hammer. Thinking oh no what have I done. The pork had a weird sweet taste and so much oil was used to reheat this stale stuff that it oozed all over my hands. The heavy oily taste was just awful. Luckily he skimped on the amount of meat and it was mostly rice so the overwhelming taste of oil was masked a bit by the flavor of the rice. My wife's quesadilla was pretty much a tiny portion of chicken with cheddar cheese folded into a stale tortilla. Her meat had the same oily sweet taste as mine. I can smell that awful oil on my hands even after washing them. Guess I should know better than to trust one and two time reviewers on Urban Spoon but my weakness in the pursuit of good Mexican food in Ottawa blinded me. This would not have happened if Taters in Kanata was open today. DARN YOU TATERS!
In the past my family and I have not been able to find what we would consider good mexican food in Ottawa. After a two year hiatus, we have begun our search again (via Urban spoon). Friday we went to El Indio (www.elindio.ca/) in Barrhaven and very surprized by the location (in the back of an Esso/Tim Hortons store), the prices (very reasonable), and the food (its made to order and we consider it very good). You order and pick up at a counter and seating is availble (combinded with Tims patrons). We tried tacos, a burrito, and nachos and all were well made and flavorful. We understand the fish tacos are very good but did not get to try them. We will be back to try them.
If you are looking for a good mexican meal, try this place. Its short on ambiance but it makes up for it in quality, taste, and price.
