I haven't been out and about much in the last year as I've been looking after a very ill family member but today I was in the Glebe and I checked out The Unrefined Olive. My friend wanted to go in and I admit I was only mildly curious but the young man who served us won me over. He was knowledgeable and quietly enthusiastic and I ended up tasting several olive oils as well as some balsamics. I had never sipped an olive oil or balsamic alone, although I use both in cooking, but they encourage you to try as many as you want and it was quite an education. It was not unlike a wine tasting with tasting notes posted with each stainless keg. I chose an organic Cerasuola olive oil from Sicily as well as an 18 year old traditional balsamic condimento and also a cranberry pear white balsamic. The price is by the size of the bottle and is the same for all their products. 200ml for $12, 375ml for $19 and there is a larger bottle available but I can't remember the size or price. They fill the bottles to order. It was actually a conversation about olive oil here on Ottawa Foodies that got me thinking about the olive oil I use and what I'd always considered to be an extra virgin olive oil probably wasn't. I loved learning about the various olive oils and balsamics, enjoyed tasting the varieties and now I doubt that I'll bother with grocery store olive oil or balsamic again.
I have been using their products for awhile and just rave to everyone about them.. Following the staff's great advice I use the lime fused oil over broiled fish and make the best vinaigrette with fig balsamic vinegar and blood orange olive oil....that is just a start. Great, great hostess Christmas gifts. Don't miss going and getting your oils and balsamic vinegars for everyone on your list!!!
We've tried only a few bottles of vinegar so far, but they are out of this world. Definitely worth a visit--and pretty hard to leave without buying something if you actually do a tasting.
