Here is a picture of V1: vermicelli with grilled pork, chicken or beef, 1 spring roll and 2 grilled shrimps. It is my to go if I am fairly hungry.

V2 is the same dish but without the spring roll and the shrimps.

The vermicelli are my favourite option at this place. I have tried the chicken curry on rice, the grilled pork on rice, and the noodle soup (pho) and they were all just ok. The vermicelli has the right balance of noodles, veggies and meat.

Since today is my last day at my present workplace and since I am heading off to new digs on Monday I decided to go for a celebratory lunch at Pho VN Express. One of my colleagues eats at Pho VN Express often so I asked her if she would like to come with me. I asked her if she had any favourite menu items and she said that the vermicelli dishes were good but to stay away from the pho since she feels it is sub-par.

The menu is short with three appetizers available, three vermicelli dishes, four rice dishes, and five pho dishes on offer. I decided to take my colleague's suggestion and order the VN special (item V1 on the menu). We got a generous serving of vermicelli noodles, grilled pork, grilled shrimp, and some shredded lettuce and carrots on the side. The meat was grilled perfectly and the portions were generous so I am now very full. My colleagues says she also enjoys getting an order of shrimp salad rolls and a small wonton soup and both are very good. I plan on making a return visit in the New Year.

I really wanted to like this place, but the first two times I went I was really disappointed. My Bun did not have any of the toppings it usually does (bean sprouts, peanuts, etc) and the portion was quite small. However, a couple weeks ago I noticed that the Vietnamese place in Esplanade closed so I gave Pho VN Express another shot. I went around 12:45 so there was no one in line and the food was great. My bun was packed full of meat and all the toppings were there. It was filling and really tasty. The shrimp were not overcooked and were juicy. However, priced at 11.99, it is still a bit pricey. There is better food and better prices if you walk a few blocks to somerset.

I really want to love this place. It opened up a few weeks ago. Its location is really unfortunate as it is deep inside an office building. The owners are very friendly and seemingly modest. I wish them well, but I didn’t love the Pho I had today.

Maybe I don’t love Pho period, but that’s hard for me to say, since there are very few foods I don’t like. Perhaps I should say I don’t prefer Pho over other options.

I had their beef noodle soup special which consisted of Beef (Rare and well done) and beef balls. A) quality of the beef left much to be desired. Well done was waaaay chewy (maybe that is how it is supposed to be?) and the rare wasn’t rare at all (but it must have cooked in the broth). Both were of questionable quality and very fatty. B) The beef ball was wack. Chewy and almost crunchy, I had to spit them out. A colleague of mine who is Vietnamese explained that they are supposed to be like that since they include tendons and such to make it extra chewy. Unfortunately that really isn’t for me, ugh, I found them really unappetizing.

The broth wasn’t the deep beautiful broth I hear so many of you talk about at other Pho places. The classic spicy red sauce and hoisin made it yummi. They did give me a free pop with lunch.

On a previous occasion I had their breakfast (standard bacon and egg fare), but I found it a bit on the skimpy side, when compared to Manhattans for the same price.

Not sure how long this place will last, considering their location and in my opinion, mediocre food. Again, I wish them the best, and I will give their vermicelli a try sometime soon, but all in all, don’t think this place will be a regular of mine.

Maybe I have no clue what I’m talking about and I need to come to terms with the fact that I don’t like Pho. It feels weird to say that.

The curry chicken was ok. It was not the most memorable curry sauce, the chicken was fairly shredded and there were no vegetables. I know, the menu said chicken curry but a little bit of carrots and potatoes would have complemented this dish well.
