Wild Fiddleheads? [General]

2017 May 10
Anyone know where to forage for Fiddleheads? I would love to find some in the wild!

I know this is not what you are asking, but fellow fiddlehead lovers may be happy to know the Produce Depot on Carling has them right now.

My front and back yards...been eating them since Saturday, and bagged up some blanched ones for fall or winter. Mine have passed their peak I think, was only able to get enough for the 2 of us to have with chicken mole tacos for dinner last night. They were looking pretty sorry, lots of crowns not sprouting and some plants looking pretty dismal, too wet I think. I saw some more out there just now though, while pushing the wheelbarrow past.
I hope you find some!

So great to see wild local food, BUT......WHY in a plastic clam shell?????
It will live on in the landfill forever.

I think some (most? / all?) of these clam shells are made from PLA, a compostable plant plastic that is fully biodegradable.

Those look great, but how do you know you are getting the biodegradable ones and not plastic?
I will continue to avoid.

Any reason not to just put them in blue bin plastic recycling?

FoodMonger.....

Sorry it did not work out to come picking but lets plan better next spring as there are 1000s where I have some space in the woods.

Biodegradable plastics generally are not recyclable. A lot of biodegradable plastics are also really only biodegradable in a commercial composting facility that can keep the temperature high enough for a long enough period of time, but won't break down in a landfill or a home composter.

More greenwashing ?

That's what I figure! Best to Refuse in the first place, or re-use, then recycle - and cross your fingers. Fiddleheads are at the market and they will put them in a paper bag for you!
